" Clearfield merchants are the only ones outside of the cities that close their stores at eight o'clock, thereby showing that they once were clerks, and know their inclina tions." Huntingdon Olobe. Are we to understand from the above that New Bloomfleld is a city? as the regu lar time for closing the stores in this place, is 8 o'clock. " . ' . Thieves. Light fingered custom era are prowling around the county. On Tuesday evening, while the family were absent,Bome persons entered and rausacked the house occupied by Mr. Samuel Witberow, in Centre township, but probably were hur ried away by the return of Mr. Witherow, as nothing was missing, and a piece of candle was left behind. Since the above was written, we learn that five other houses in this vicinity have beon ransacked. .Investigation Wanted. Late develop ments seem to render it more than prob able that John Ba ird who was found dead near his house in Centre twp., two weeks since, came to his death by a blow inflicted by a person who is prowling around thut vicinity. At any rate -the matter needs further investigation, and here is a chance for our sheriff to show whether he has any detective abilities or not This person is supposed to be one who is needed in North umberland co., to finish a term in jail. At anv rate this chap has been seen in the vicinity and was known to have made threats against Mr. Bah-d and also against a brother of the deceased who resides in another part of the twp. At the house of the latter a watch is kept at night, so well convinced are the family that there is danger of another murder being committed. The man who is feared was sent to the penitentiary from this county, several years since, for horse stealing and is, no doubt, one of the party who is committing the depredations lu this section of the country, With as many vigilant officers as are lo cated in this vicinity,' the party ought not long to be left at large. - x . .
