A cniioug incident is related in a French paror as having occurred in a littlo village not far from Paris. Some beea were swarming on an oak trou, nud a wood-cutter named Ouiot climbed the tree and cut off the extremity of the branch upon which the swarm hung. Instead of falling to the ground, however, the swarm dispersed and settiod on the head of Ouiot, who was still sitting on the branch, forty feet from the ground. The bystanders believed that, tortured by the stings, he would fall to the ground. But with great presence of mind, Guiot remained perfectly still till the swarm had formed two long wreaths hanging from his temples ; then, half blinded by the In sects, which also covered his face and body, lie contrived to descend from his elevated position, taking the greatest care not to ir ritate this living mantle. When he reach ed the ground a hive was placed on his shoulder, but three hours elapsed before the bees would take possession of their new home. When this happy change was effected the poor wood-cutter's wild de light testified to the intensity of the anxie ty and discomfort he had endured. Irregular Hatching. A correspondent of the Poultry Chroni cle having been unsuccessful with his eggs, the chickens hatching irregularly and dy ing soon after breaking the shell, the editor says, in answer to his complaint : . " We fancy the fault lies with your neglect of a very common rule, that of damping your eggs. We ait) great stick lers for nature. A hen pheasant, partridge or grouso, or a common hen that steals her nest, leaves the eggs at break of day, prompted by nature, and goes to the grass in search of food. It is at that time wet as a river. She returns to her nest reeking, and sits on her eggs. Hence the uniform success. Following our great exemplar, we always, for seven or eight days before hatching, damp our eggs with water. Fail ing in that, the membrane that lines the inside of the shell becomes too tough for the chickens to penetrate, and they either ; die in the Bholl or come out one two at a time, as they succeed- in breaking from their prison house." Clover lu South Carolina. The corespondent to the Agricultural Department in York Couuty, S. C, writes : " A few years ago clovor was scarcely ever seen growing in this county, unless upon some small lot bolongiug to what the people called "a book-farmer; now nearly every farmer grows from one-half of an Lj,l acre to twenty acres. No machinery for , ' threshing out the seed, that I am aware of, has thuB far been brought here, and seed brought from northern markets is exclu sively sown. In this couuty, on clay soil modoratcly fertile, clover has succeeded well ; still, as yet, it is rarely planted as a crop, most farmers preferring to experi ment on a small scale before seeding down with it any valuable portion of land. Its introduction here is a success, and its width will increase every year hereafter. Don't Cut too Low. We think many of our farmers make a great mistake in cutting their grass very low, and that is mere particularly the case with tinothy. If out below the first joint, its roots will seldom send up shoots again until after the formation of new side bulbs. Clover and other deep-rooted plants are not so much affected,, but we are satisfied that all or any of thorn may be, and often are, injured by too. close cutting. It Is a fact well known that if timothy is allowed to ripen its seed, and then cut with reaper or cradle, the second growth will furnish double the amount- ofl pasture as adjoining grass- cut for hay. 1 ' Blackberry Wine. . The following is said to be an excellent recipe for the manufacture of superior wine from blackberries : Measure your berries and bruise them ; to every gallon addiug one quart of boiling water. Let the mixture stand twenty-four hours, stirring occasionally, then strain off the liquor into a cask, to every gallon adding two pounds of sugar ; cork tight, and'let stand till the following October,. anil you will have wine ready for use,' without any further strain ing or boiling, that will make lips smack as they never smacked before, wider sUni lar influences. Cooking Wee, lllce may be cooked so that every grain will be as separate as when dryy by steam ing. Put in as much water or milk as you would use to boll it, and aet the dish in the steamer. It will take longer to took than in the old way, but never burns or sticks, and is a beautiful dish when done. 11T Honey and castor oil mixed are ex cellent fur asthma, A teaspoonful may be taken night and morning, with great benefit.
