Careful oxperiraontera have found that nitrogenous manures are rather favorable to tbe potato diseaso, whereas wood ashes, (containing a large precontage of potash,) , aud lime and salt were conducive to a lieallhy gTowth of the plant. Professor Way found that the percentage of potash in the ash of the ' Jerusalem Artichoke was 55.89 Beans, (Seed) ..51.72 The tuber of the Potato .,..50.88 Peas, (Seed) 41.50 Turnip (Bulb) 80.16 Wheat, (Seed) 83.14 Mangel (Root) 28.54 Barley 21.14 Oats ; 1, 13.97 It will be seen by the foregoing that ex cepting tbe artichoke and beans, the tuber of the potato contains more .'potash than -many of our commonly cultivated plants, and hence bow excellent wood ashes must lie mi fertilizer for potatoes.' But we would ask attention to the exemption of the potato from disease when the soil was fertilized with wood ashes, lime, and salt, as has been shown by exact and elaborate experiments in different parts of the world. It was ascertained by a ' series of experi ments, mado under the direction of Pro cessor Voelckcr, that the largest crop, and comparatively free from disease, was from a manuring of dissolved bone ash and crude potash salts. Twenty tons of rotten dung gave 2 tons 11 cwt. and I qr. of potatoes. Dissolved bone ash, (4 cwt., and crudo pot ash salts, 4 cwt.) gave 2 tons 18 cwt. aud 2 qrs ; crude potash salts (4 owt) gave 2 tons 10 cwt. and 1 qr.l "With' these ma nures the potatoes wore much less diseased than when rotten dung was used. They were still less diseased when common salt and dissolved bone ash were used. The I'rofessor says: "The efficacy of the super phosphate as a manure for potatoes, on light lands is not only enhanced by potash salts, but also, though to a minor extent, by common salt." Jn the experiments spoken of, though common salt alone slightly diminished the crop, salt aud su perphosphate had a most beneficial effect. In the absence of rotten dung, and In the presence of mineral manures, the Potato Disease, though not absent, was far less destructive in its ravages. TrauHpIuutiug Evergreens. Tlio best season for transplanting is June vrjuly. The lion. Samuel Walker, once President of the Massachusetts Horticultu ral Society, who owned then extensive nurseries in Roxbury, transplanted 100 ar bor vitic trees for the writer on the 1st day of August, warranting every one to live, and only one or two died. They should be watered at the tinio and mulched, but not watered again unless very dry weather and then not oftener than once a week, as they do not require m much water as deciduous trees, and may be killed by too rauoh. Tbe lato N. P. Willis thanked the writer for tho above information, and said he had tried the experiment at Idlewild, on the Hudson, with perfect success, many years tW In ordinary outside painting, ex posed to the weatbor, the ocbieous and other earthy colors sold as yellow ochre, Venetian red, &q.-, are far more economical aud ' durable than any white lead, or its compounds. . The earthy- paiuts will last fully twice as long and protect the work ettor also. In mixing it Is not necessary to grind In a paint mill, but morely mix the oil and color together well, using a mall amount of dryftr and no turpentine for outside work. Try 1 to have the paint oil pure liuseed oil, if it can be got. tW Coal ashes are only beneficial to trees when applied as a mulch where the trees stand in grass. At least we have never found them useful in any other way when applied alone. They keep the grass down, if applied in lufiloiont quantity, and the soil loose. But they pre excellent to mix with any kind of fermenting manure, . They are very good doodoiisori or absor- ImjiiU, and can be used , with the most profit in this manner.
