Oiling Into Hot Water.
There Is a doctor in this city, says tbo
Ban Francisco Chronicle, who has a speak
ing tube loading from the main entrance of
the building to hi ofllce, which is up just
a few flights. For several days past a
smart young man named Swartz, has amus
ed himself by calling through the tube
pipe for the doctor, and then profanely or
dering him to set out on an exsuision for
Tartarus. For some time this fuu was
taken in good part unlit the fine humor of
the joke no longer became apparent. Ac-
Anwlittnltf nna afl ntnnnn 4 1m liuni nln rF
of Esculapius provided himself with a
tea-kettle of water, heated to adout 210
dogrees Fahrenheit and waited alongside
tho pipe. Pretty soon the old familiar
Sound came tip through the pipe:
"Say, Doc, how's Trick?" v
" Tricks Is better; I guess he'll get well"
responded the doctor, reaching out after the
tea-koitle.
"What has been the matter with him ?"
" lie's got burnt."
"How?"
"You get."
The doctor had finished his last sentenco
and then let a quart of scalding water
down tho pipe. Swartz had his mouth over
it, and when the water struck it he was
somewhat surprised. Water was apt to
surprise him, but hot water was an unex
pected novelty. The man above poured in
the water for about a minute, and then
looked out of the window. The smart
young man was getting along the sidewalk
at a pretty lively gait having evidently just
got up from a sitting posture. He was
trying .to yell "polico," but couldn't ar
ticulate with much success. About half an
hour afterwards he found himsolf able to
speak and inquired:
" Did that boiler explosion ' hurt any
body ?"
'" What kin I git you ?" asked a
I clerk in a book-store of a boy customer.
"Hoosier Schoolmaster," answered tho
w-
"Who's mv schoolmaster?" cried 'tho
clerk, his face in a blaze, as he came round
the counter with his fist doubled, " I'll
show you who's my schoolmaster. " t .
The boy left instanter, and concluded to
apply for his book to some one whose
conscience was not so tender on the subject
of education. ,
Dr. T. sent by mail a bottle of

surprised to receive on the eleventh day,
the half empty bottle, with a note from
the patient, saying that he had returned
them as requested, although they had done
him a great deal of good, and he should
have been glad to have taken them a little
longer. . ,
t3yA bachelor editor was traveling all
alone by himself. His baggage consisted
of but one extra shirt, and that one a blue
checked one. The baggage man accosted
him with: '
" Any baggago, sir ?"
" Yes, sir."
"Let me see your checks."
The editor cautiously unravelled tho
bundle, and holding up his shirt, asked
the fellow If he could see the checks. An
umph t in basso continuendo, and the ex
pressmen was gone. '

thing answering to that description 1"
