Hawmsy undoubtedly owes the in creased majority by which he was re-elected to Congress, to the attempts he made to defeat the "Salary Steal." When that bill was before the House lie made a speech agaiust it iu which he used the following strong language. "One party already has its grave dug, and the other wants to be side by side with it. Back of these two political parties aro the American people, who will have some' thing still further to say about the ques tion. I care so little about parties and elections that, if this is to be the style of legislation, 1 am willing to assiBt at tue digging and the funeral, and I don't care what party comes after it. We can't have anything worse, in my opinion, than the party which becirs, six months after the most ardent 1 professions of Economy, to raise our own salarios, so that we may put x iu our pockets $0,000 not dreamed of until two or three weeks ago. Gen. Ilawley, also consistently re fuses to take the increased salary. Connecticut Election.
