FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS IT Jnrtfe commtmicrtMonsrom ntt personswfto ar interested in matters properly belonging to this department. Cnltnreof Cranberries. Where do all the cranberries come from, it a question often asked; and, on investi gation, we are fairly astonished to witness the remarkable amount of business now transacted in this small fruit. To thoso having low lands, useless for any other purpose, the cranberry, once planted, often yields the possessor a greater profit than any similar area of other crops on the same farm. The consumption of this fruit is extend ing rapidly into all parts of the world J is becoming more and more a household ne cessity. , Now Jersey raises the largest bulk of cranberries in this country, employ ing about six thousand acres for the pur pose, the value of tho crop raised on which last year was $000,000. Tho whole cranber ry crop of the country is estimated at about $1,500,000. Massachusetts raises not less than ten thousand barrels a yoar. Within , the past five years Wisconsin lias made rapid progress in tho culture of the cran berry, and the crop in that State last sea son is estimated at $!i00,000. The averago price per barrel of this fruit is $10, Cape Cod cranberries commanding the highest price. The fruit raised on tho Cape is the best of its kind in tho world. It is expor ted largoly to England, andfluds its way to He Queen's dinner-table. To Prevent the Ducnj of Shingles. Tho following is said to effectually pre vent decay in shingles: Take tho potash kottlo, or largo tub, and put into it ono barrel of lye of wood-ashes, Cvo pounds of white vitriol, fivo pounds of alum, and as much salt as will dissolve in the mixture. Make the liquor quite warm, and put as many shingles into it as can bo convenient ly wet at once. When well soaked take them out, and put in more, renewing the liquor as necessary. Then lay tho shingles in the usual manner. After they are laid, take tho liquor that is left, put lime enough in it to make whitewash, and, if any color ing is desired, add ochre, Spanish brown lampblack, etc., and apply to the roof with a brush or an old broom. This wash may be renewed from timo to timo. Salt and lye are excellent preservatives of wood. It is well known that leach-tubs, troughs, and other articles used in tho manufacture of potash never rot. They become saturated with the alkali, turn yellowish inside, and, remain impervious to the weather. Cherry Trees. Thoso should nover be highly manured. Singular as it may seem, better results havo been obtained by growing cherry trees in grass than by cultivating them as high pears. Experienced fruit-growers in Doloware, who once began a system of liberal manuring and treatment of cherry trees, found, after an experience of a few years, that the bark would burst, gum would oozo out, and many portions of tho tree show an unhealthy condition. The growers immediately discontinued high feeding und seeded the laud down to grass. Tho trees recovered their health, and have borne bountifully ever since the system of grass culture began. It is the only fruit tree of all varieties which we can safely ruooinmcud to be treated in this way. A Delaware friend says his row of cherry trees, growing in grass along the fence, are the picture of health and luxuriance; while in previous yoars with orchard culture, ho could never make them successful. C3TOne of the best and most accurate farmers informs us that when a boy, as soon as he learned book-keeping at school, his father employed him to keep the farm accounts the cost of labor, amount of work expended on each field, time of per forming operations, plowing, sowing, cul. tivating, harvesting, amount of crops, priceB at which sales where made, etc. lie soon became much interested in farm op erations, and thoroughly acquainted with all details of work, in a more complete manner than he ever could have been in any othor way, and was early placed on the track of farming regularly and syste matically. Let other farmers follow this example with their sons, and we shall havo order and success. , Chapped Hands. Tho easiest and simplest rcuiody for chapped hands is found in every storeroom. Take common starch and pulverize with the blade of a knife until reduced to the smoothest powder. Every time the baud are taken from tho suds or dishwater, wipe them, and, while yet damp, rub a portion of the starch over them thoroughly, cover ing the whole surface. The effect is mag ical.
