Years ago the cltizeas sot up a fair to try and raise mon ey to buy a minister a night shirt. I went to it. The clerks at the fair were fair fe males.' I gave a gal a five-dollar bill for a chicken's hind leg without any gravy on it, and she never gave me any change back. remarked that was dear. She offered to bet me the price of the ponwipor that it wasn't. I took the bet, and says I to a gal she had with her: " Don't you think that it is dear?" "No, sir," said she, "I know it ain't dear, it's chicken." I paid for the pen-wiper. I visited anothor table, and I bought a little cotton-flannel dog for a dollar. There was only three cents' worth of flan nel and one cent's worth of stuffing in that whole dog, and it's tail couldn't possibly have cost over two cents to import. It was made to stick pins into, and I could stick pins into it all day n nd.it wouldn't stir. think I paid too much for the dog, for since that I bought a dog for fifty cents and you can't stick one pin into him with out his jumping a rod. How It Happened. A few days ago Mr. H. was sent by his employer to do some work in a house- When he called he found a company of ladies present, and remarked to the lady of the house that he thought it best to take the work into the yard. " O, no, no," said she, " it is cold in the yard, and you can work in this room where it is nice and warm." " But," said II., " I shall litter the room and besides, I well, I'd rather work in. the yard." 1 0, yes I see you are afraid of the- ladies, eh ?" said she. " I declare, I won der how you happened to got married.',' " Well," said II., " I'll tell you all about it. I happened to meet one once that I wasn't afraid of, and she took advantage of it, and before I knew wlAt was tip she had me fast enough, and I've been afraid of her ever since." t"A comio twin story is reported from, Dustin. A barber was waited upon one morning by a nice young gentleman, who desired the hairdresser's lowest terms per week for keeping his comely caput in con dition. Thereafter the new customer ap peared regularly every day for a " close Bhave," with frequent additions of sham pooing and hair-cutting, and often twice a day. In short, the barber marveled much at the rapidity with which this young man's beard and hair grew, and the mystery was only solved after a considerable lapse of time, when one day, "two of him" came into the shop at once for a shave. The original customer who made the bargain had a twin brother so exactly like him in personal appearance that " one couldn't toll t'other from which," and the two bad been getting the attentions of the tonsor for the price paid for one. CSTSoveral conceited young men were assembled on a street corner when a poor Dutchman approached. One of thorn said to his companions: " Boys, I'm going to have some fun. Just watch me fool this Dutchy 1" He went up to the German to whom he said. " Kaiser, don't you want to buy a dog?" The person addressed quickly responded: " Y-a-a-s I yust want to buy a leetle puppy 'bout your size. Are you for sale?" The puppy struck off, the laughter of his comrades making him purple with rage. t3F"A rich old fellow who owns more houses than any one man in Toledo, was waited upon by a committee for a sub scription to rebuild the fence about the cemotery. His reply was characteristic as well as humorous. " Gentlemen, I have always made it a rule in my business, never to make any repairs until tht tenant began to complain. P7Tlrenco (Bricklayer's Laborer, ac climatized, to Paddy, (just from Cork), Seli yer Pig an Fournichurean', come over wld Biddy to this blissed country. "Whar? wbar?" shouted several. "In'de dictionary," he replied, rolling his eyes skyward, tSfDryden was so bound up in his books that his wife exclaimed: 11 1 wish I were a book that I might al ways be in yonr society." " I wish you were an almanac, so I could change you every year," replied he. UTA Bishop, fond of hunting, being re bukod that the apostles never hunted, re plied, " No ; shooting was very bad in Palestine, so they went fishing instead."
