" Dick" Wood, candidate for Congress in this district, while canvassing in the mountains tlio other day, was compelled at one point to imbibe a good deal of apple jack in order to convince the natives that he was not one of those " high flyers" who think themselves made of superior stuff to the "honest and hardy yoemanry," Tho consequence was that Dick after giving orders to be woke up at three o'clock in the mornintr, that he might be able to reach a distant appointment when he ro tircd to reft, was in five minutes after he laid down "as good as a dead man." Some scamps procured some lamp black, and thoroughly blacked his faco. Next morning, piomptly, he was aroused at three o'clock, and was in such a bury to be off that he did not take time to wash, but bolt ed his break fiint and rode away at a brisk gait. Arriving at his destination he hunt ed up a prominent politician, to whom he had a letter of introduction, and presented credentials. The gentleman read the let ter, alternating the reading with glances at Dick's face and then asked : Are you Major Woods, of Mount Ster ling?" "That's my name, sir," replied Dick. "Why, I thought you were a white man," said the other. Greatly astonished, "Dick" blurted out, "And so I am." " Well you have a cussed black skin for a white man." " What the devil do you mean ?" asked " Dick," angrily, "do you mean to insult me?" " No, sir, but you had better not attempt to speak heere to-day. Our boys won't stand a speech from a nigger !" A nigger 1" cried "Dick;" "why, there ain't a drop of nigger blood in my veins 1 I'm as white as any other man 1" Seeing a glass on the wall, " Dick" step ped up and looked in it. Starting back, he exclaimed : " Well, if the cussed fools at Wythevillo haven't waked up the wrong man, and Wood is over there yet I" Jerking off his hat, he dropped into a chair and began vigorously to fan himself. The other seeing his straight hair, and noticing that the back of his neck appeared to be white, suggested soap and water. Fontcnelle, at the age of ninety- seven, after saying many able and gallant things to the young and beautiful Madame Helvetius, passed her once without per ceiving her. " See," said she, stopping and address ing him, " how I ought to value your gal lantries 1 You pass me without even look ing at mo I" "Madame," said the old man, "if I had looked at you, I could not have passed." CST" A Memphis paper says that a chap wandered into the Mayor's office in that city recently, and asked permission to look at the book in which the names of candidates for office are entered. The clerk blandly asked him what office he was running for, when he replied, " wall, I dunuo ; thought I'd look over and go for any vacancy that might turn up. I'm beastly fond of orfls. " tW The other day, says the Troy Press, a lady, having occasion to leave her apart ment a few minutes, locked the door and loft a little child of two years playing upon the floor. ' When she came back she was horrified to see the girl toying with a rat which she had in one hand and was affec tionately caressing with tho other. Villager "Well, all I knows is, he want ed to teach my boy to spell Haters with a PI" tW At a recent examination the ques tion was asked why the children of Israel made a golden calf aud worshiped it after tbey had been forbidden such idolatry by Moses. ft.. A precocious little fellow sharply an- swoied, " Because they had not enough gold to make a bull with." The laughter which followed put a stop to the examina tion for that day. - ty A kirk luminary recently asked his pet scholar why they took (Stephen outside the walls of the city to stone him to death. The little fellow was silent for a moment, as though absorbed with the problem, when, brightening up suddenly, he replied, "So they could git a better cracit at una." tW " Have you Blasted Hopes?" asked a youpg lady of a librarian with a hand kerchief tied over his Jaw. , "No, ma'am," said he, "it's only a blasted toothache I"
