Dr. Hall, in a communication to the Philadelphia Evening Star, give the fol lowing (information about colds: '' Scientifically speaking, oold is merely a negative state of matter a diminished de gree of molecular motion. This may be tho occasion of disease, for all extremes of temperature produce morbid conditions. But the common causos of the disoase which is termed a "cold," are just the op posite of those mentioned Jn the article . quoted. "Taking cold," as applied to dis ease, would be more correctly expressed by the phrase . "taking heat." Going from a very cold to a very warm atmosphoro sud denly, or exposing a part that is very cold to a hot lire, occasions a hundred "colds," while mere exposure to cold occasions one. Indeed, it is impossible to "take cold," iu the technical sense of the term, by contin uous exposure to cold, however severe or prolonged. ' The morbid condition that is termed a ""cold," in medical parlance, is cither an inflammation or a fever or both. If in flammation exist the part inflamed is af fected with heat, redness, pain, and swell ing, which together constitute the diagno sis of inflammation. If the gonoral system suffers from chilliness in some parts and pre ternatural heat in others the afleotion is properly termed fovor. In severe " colds" liere may be both local inflammation and constitutional fever, as in ncute catarrh influenza, epizooty, etc. But in all of these cases the essential disease, though termed a cold, or the conscquonco of taking cold, us inflammatory aud febrile. .Freezing a part of the body, and burning 'a part, occasion the same disease, inflam mation. But the intensity of the inflamma tion which is preceded by freezing will al ways be in proportion to tho suddenness with which it is thawed. And herein is the im portant rule applicable alike to the preven tion and treatment of all affections which are termed " common colds." When any part of the body, or tile whole of it, is much chilled it should be warmed as gradually as possible. Chillblains are occasioned by exposing the hands or feet to a hot fire after being chilled. Many catarrhal affec tions would have been prevented had the patient kept away from the hot stove until his superficial circulation was restored. The danger of cooling the body too sud denly when heated is very trifling compared with the danger of warming the body too suddenly when chilled. 1 It is always im, portant to keep the foot warm, and it is certainly true that it is very difficult to " catch" a serious cold unless the feet be come chilled; but ho part rendered pain fully cold by exposure to a low temperature should ever approach a very warm room, much less a hot stove, until the sensations Lave become entirely comfortable and the circulation balanced. In these days of snow, Bleet, ice, slush, and frost-bitten "noses and toeses," it may be well for some persons to be remindod that frozen parts should never bo rubbed. Friction is good to prevent freezing; but when a part is actually frozen to rub it is to lacerate and mangle tho capillary ves sels and blood-corpuscles by moving the angular crystals of ice among them, and endanger violout inflammation and possi bly mortification. , Western Corn Crop. A letter from Harding county, Iowa, says : We had an immonbo crop of corn in 1871, and nearly as large in 1873. At the gathering of the lost crop there was old corn enough to answor the wants of the country until the harvest of 1878. Thou. sands upon thousands of bushels that were purchased by dealers and shippers last year have been held over, as there has been no time since the harvest of 1871 when it would pay to shell and hip it. Large quantities are now burned for fuel, as it is thought cheaper to burn at IS oents pel bushel of 73 pounds on the cob, than wood at to tO per cord. A perpetual or " draw" limekiln, running uight aud day, burned large quantities the past autumn with very satlfactory results as to cost, and an extra quality of lime over that burn ed with either coal or wood ; so the pro prietor informed me. I myself sold to him old corn at 20 cents, as preferable to the present crop at IS cents. He ships to the whole west half of the Btato, to the Missouri River, and even beyond to Da kota. tWto dye pink, take three parts of cream of tartar and one of cochineal nioely rubbed together; tie a teospoonful in a mustard bag. Put this In with a quart of boiling water; dip in the articles to be col ored, previously cleaned and dipped in alum water; if wished stiff, put in a little gum arable.
