Landrctb, at Bloomsdalo, near Bristol, Bucks county, Pennsylvania, a trial was made of the "Williamson road and field steamer," under the supervision of the inventor, D. D. Williamson, of Now York. The experiment is reported as en tirely successful. Mr. Williamson's inven tion is an improvement on the "Thompson road steamer" of Great Britain, consisting mainly in the attachment of vulcanized rubber tires in such a way as to prevent the wheels from sinking in soft soil, or compressing it to an injurious degree. Tho report represents that tho steamer con sumes about one ton of coal per day ; re quires for working it an engineer, fireman, and " a boy to drive a water cart ;" can bo used for driving thrashing and other ma chines ; will draw from twenty to thirty tons of freight in wagons on any fair coun try road ; will turn on a space not exceed ing in diameter its own length ; will plow, on land suitable for cultivation by steam, from one to three acres per hour, according to longth of land and depth of furrow j and costs, with plow and tackle complote, $ 5, 000, The following extracts are from a discription of its action by an eye-witness : No team of horses could have turned, backed, and stopped with more facility and certainity. It was run up tho steep bridge way of a barn, having an elevation of one foot in five, backed down, and run up again with the greatest easo and facility. For a further confirmation of its capacity a couple of large farm wagons were coupled behind it, in which about twenty of tho guests were seated for a ride. It trotted "Off with us on the public road toward Bris tol, at the rate of six to seven miles per hour ; went through gates, turned in at bars, crossed soft gullies, went up sharp iiillocks, crossed at a sharp elevation the railroad-track, and down again on the other side, and making a short turn, brought us back through a field of fifty acres, which bad been plowed with it, to the place of departure. The plowing was beautifully done, and we were informed at an average depth of 0 inches, much of it being 13 inches. No moro accurate or lov cl furrows, as it appeared to us, could bo made by any plowman, with a well-trained team of horses. , After being uncoupled from tho wagons it was attachod for a trial of plowing to the Williamson gang-plow, consisting of live secured to one frame. On tho way to the field tho plows follow ed tho steamer as erected as a two-wheolad cart. Not a moment was lost in gotting to work. The field selected Was an old tough sod with a steep grade in the center. Tho tripping of a lever by the fireman, which he performed from his station at the boilor, lot the plows into the ground, and away rolled tho steamer as straight as an arrow, with the tough sod-furrows rolling over behind like so many waves. Tho work seemed perfect, each furrow being mechanically correct and alike in width and depth. At the ascent of the grade in the middle of the field, no diminished speed was observable, tho power seeming bo ar bitrary and irresistible that no ordinary field obstructions could have resisted its continuous progress. Arrived at the end of the field, the fireman pulled another rope, and out shot each one of the plows, the steamer spun aromid on one wheel, ran across the headlaud, and turning into Dew land, was instantly at work on the . "turn-bout. There was no hitch, no slipping or backing, but a simple, silent triumph of good, sensible engineering. We aro thus paiticularin describing ex actly what we saw and was witnessed with surprise and pleasure by the wholo com pany, because it demonttrated that the ex periment of steam on the farm and on the road was successful in every point. ' tlT The United States Commissioner of Agriculture in his lato report speaks of the consumption of timber in this country as follows: "If for twenty years te come the demand for lumber shall iucreaso the same ratio to the population as in the past twenty more than $200,000,000 worth of sawed lumber will be needed each year, denuding moro than 10,000,009 acres of land." About 7,000 acres aro cleared of timber each week-day in this country. Of the annual crop $75,000,000 worth goes to fuel, and twice as much to fencing. Tho locomotives in this country consume no less than 7,000,000 cords a year, or COO acres a day. This is a startling revelation, but there is no doubt that it is substantially true, and the day is not far distant when every acre of timber land will be immensely valuable. C3T"The Canadian way of measuring tree is said to be as certain as it Is gro tesque. You walk from the tree, looking at it from time to time between your knees.
