8 QLlji mhf.o Nctu 'iSlbomficUi;' JaV Chines In Pennsylvania. " "I Considerable trouble lias been made at Beaver Falls, by the Introduction of Chi nese as workmen. In explanation of the affair the Pittsburg Pott nays: On the 12th of August last, twelve white men were dis charged from the forge-room of the works ftt Beaver Falls, and Chinamen substituted. The white workmen became discontented. The proprietors and the superintendent, Mr. Reeves, wont around among the men and endeavored, with some suocess, to soothe their discontent. Werk went on as usual until Nov. 1, when eight more men were discharged from the forgo room. A month later, December 1, a delegation of sixty-nine Chinamen ai rived at tlio works and subsequently a few more straggling heathens, till the wholo Squad numbered 160. The proprietors immediately distrib uted the late arrivals, putting them in charge of the skilled Chinese, and gradu ally displacing a proportionate number ef white men. Tho skilled white workmen .who taught the first installment of Chinese the rudiments of the business .were put at common work at reduced rates. - ; This state of things continued till yester day, when the proprietors notified the fore man of the forge-shop that the Ann pro posed to have none but Chinese in the forge-room. '' As the foreman had agreed not to do this, tho white w'orkmbn in the machine and forgo department immediate ly struck. Tho, proprietor woro vory an gry, and urged tho whito men not to leave, as there was other work to do. Tho men not relishing the idea of doing subordinate work, while, the Cinnamon wero given all tho skilled work I do, quit in a body and a delegation of them, all having families ex cept two, arrived in this city.ycsterdny in search of employment. Tho foroman of the pocket cutlery department was also no tified of tho new nrrnngcmcnr, but he and his men refused to agree to it, and all quit except a man named Smith. ' There are some 200 employed at tho works and about 100 of the number aro gentlemen from Hong Kong and tho banks of 'the Yangtsckiang. Tho plan of tho manage ment was to keep tho whito men till thoy taught the heathens the secret of tho busi ness, and then the whito mon might work in a subordinate capacity at reduced rates, or quit. The Chiuctio workmen ut the Falls live in a miseniblo old hulk called the Mansion House. At tho works is a storehouse whore these Mongolian gentlemen get their sup plies, such as opium, tea, rice, &c, ' which are imported direct from China. In their habits they aro very dirty; and aro treated with thorough contempt by tho people of the neighborhood. Thoy aro gregarious in their habits, seldom "going it alone," and are addicted to drinking. ' . . A Fight with a Deer. . Tho Litchfiold, Minn., Ledger says About two weeks ago a Bwcdo by tho name of Torgilorson, who, resides in Swift county, was proceeding to a neighbor's, some three miles distant from bis own homo, carrying a shovel ou his shoulder, which ho was re tinning to his neighbor from whom ho had borrowed it. lie had accomplished about half of his journey and was passing throng a small grove when he heard a crashing in the underbrush, and turning round saw a stalwart deer, of the buck persuasion, mak ing for him with every demonstration of liostile intentions. 1 ' There was but one course to pursue and that was to fight for his life, and, being a powerfully made man, he anticipated an easy conquest. Mistaken man 1 The deer charged with antlers lowered, even as an enraged bull would lower his head when dashing at his foes. Nuls. grasped - his shovel and stood stoutly on the defensive As the enraged buck neared him he aimed a dcBperato blow with the shovel full at his head. It struck one of his antlers with such force as to break it, but tho concussion was so strong that it forced Nels. backward several feet, and hurled hitu breathless against a tree. Just how the fight went after that Ntsls. don't remember, but be knows that be fought with all the strength of desperation, and at last the deer and himself both fell to the ground, and Nuls. lost all consciousness for a time. When he came " round tohissoul again" tho deer was lying stark dead near by him and he could barely crawl away. His clothes were in rags, Lis left cheek torn open, a gash on the right side. . where the deer had inserted one of the prongs of its antlers, and three fingers of the left hand badly jammed up. The shovel was a total wreck, aud the carcass of the dear was pretty well hashed around the head and shoulders. ' The blow that caused the animals death was inlliuted by a sharp corner of the shovel remaining on the handle after most of the blade had .been broken off". The wounded man succeeded in crawling back to his home, which he reached in a terribly ex. hausted coudition, It is thought that lie will survive his wounds. t3f"It.
