FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Ce invltt communicationtfrom all pertonuho art Irtitretted in mattert properly belonging to Uii department. Honey by the Ton. In Log Angeles County, on the eastern slope of tbe San Francisco range of moun tains, and in tho immediate vicinity of tbe Learning Petroleum Company's oil region, there is the most wonderful collection of wild honey in existence. Tbe hive is lo cated in a rift, which ponetrates the rock to the depth, probably, of 100 feet. Tbe oriflce is thirty feet long and soveutoeii' feet wide; four passages. Tho rift was dis covered to be the abiding place of a swarm of bees that is reprosontod as coming out in a nearly solid column one foot iu diameter. Certain parties haveeudoavorod to descend to the immense store of houoy collected by these bees, but were invariably driven back and one man lost bis life In the effort. Others have, at tho expense of much labor and money, built a scaffold 125 feet high in the hope of reaching a place whence they could run a drift into the rock and extract its well-hoarded sweets, but finally ceased their work. Within four years the bees havo added not less than fifteen feet of depth to their treasure, as ascertained by actual measurement, and . it is thought rthat at the present time thoro cannot be Cess than eight or ton tons of honoy in the rock. A man named D. Brophy lives in a 'cabin net far from the spot, and obtained from the melting of the honey by the sun's iieat more than enough for his family re- (luirements. All through that region im mense stores of wild honoy are found in trees, in the rocks, in nearly every place where its industrious manufacturers think of for bees seem to think that it is secure. They consume a very small proportion, as the climate enables them to keep up op erations near every day in tho year, and flowers of some sort are always in bloom. It must be a very severe season indeed when the little fellows are not seen abroad In vast numbers, busily engaged in their mellifluous work. Isn't It True 1 When an enterprising man buys a run down, neglected farm, withrickerty aud di lapidated buildings, and at once proceeds to improve it clears up the unslightly fence- corners, drains the wet land, pulls out the stumps or rocks, moves the barn to the back of the house and sets tho now house a little distance back of tbe highway, lays out a lawn with pleasant walks and shade trees and bodges, brings blooded stock with him, and causes bis acres to produce three-fold more than ever before, what man so stupid as not to recognize that is a pecuniary gain to the neighborhood? No matter how selfish the owner may be at heart, if he makes his farm more valuable, Le docs tho same, to some extent, to all around him. The neighbors like to see a handsome farm near them, even if they never think of selling, and whon they do try to sell, the prospective buyor will iu variably have his attention called to the handsome pioperty over the way, or which adjoins, or at least is not far off. Specu lators holding unimproved lands like noth iug so well as to be able to say (because- nothing is more potent) that it lies in the very best of neighborhoods, is surrounded by rich farm in the highest state of culture, in a delightful region )f walks and drives; that the people are intelligent, and their tastes reflnod; that schools and churches abound ; and that the value of the land has been proved by the extraordinary yield of crops on tho adjacent farms. When these things can be said truthfully, sales are comparatively easy, and that at tke high est prices. Does not every enterprising farmer see, then as woll as those who are not farmers Yhut there is a money value in intelli gence, aud that the rapidity of its spread concerns them very closely t Improvements on one's own place are well, wise and ad mirable ; but so are improvements around you. There should be, then, no neglect of the means. Every agency which will pro mote farm intelligence should be employed and kept up. Burning out Chimneys. Chimneys should be attended to every autumn, if we would avoid their taking lire. Many a valuable homestead has been destroyed from negligence in this matter. Hoot accumulates very rapidly, and should be either cleaned out, or burned out on some rainy day, when sparks or cinders will not ignite the roof. If a chimney takes lire tho readiest means to stop it is to apply a wet table cloth or blanket to whole front of the fire-place, and either hold or pin it close into the jamb, then lift up the bot tom far enough to throw a pail of water on tho lire. This will create a cloud of steam which will roduno, if it does not extinguish the fire. If a pistol is fired up a chimney it will bring down quantities of soot, and it is an easy way to cloan a small chimney, A few handafull of salt thrown Into the fire-place or the grata will put out fires, Flour or sulphur thrown upon tbe fire will " R R R ; RADWAY'S READY "RELIEF tUHKH THE WORST PAINS In from One to Twenty Minute.'
