Retrenchment anlSeform. : The House Committee on the Judiciary, on Friday, agreed to report a bill increas ing the salary of tbe President of the Uni ted States, on and after ' March 4th, from twenty-five thousand dollars to fifty thou sand dollars per annum. 'On Tuesday night, at about 11 o'clock a fire broke out in the Fifth Avenue hotel iu New York. The fire was discovered by one of the guests on tho second floor, in the stairway and elevator leading from the laundry to the servants' apartments in the top of the building on the Tweuty-tblrd street side. A largo steam pipe, nearly five inches in diameter, for beating purposes, had rendered the woodwork so iuflamable that it fell an easy prey to the lira and as if through a funnel tho Humes shot with astonishing rapidity to tho servants' de partment on the seventh floor. There are 400 assistants of all kinds in the hotel, and of these fully 160 are women. The nlarm was immediately given, and the appliances for extinguishing tho flames, with which the hotel was well provided, were brought into use, but the efforts of tho employes were of no avail in checking tho flames. After some delay the alarm was given, and the Fire Department were soon on the ground. In the meantime the panic stricken guests had been aroused and thronged the halls, while from the servants' apartments, now cut off by the flames, the most agonizing shrieks caino. To the ef forts of the firemen the fire soon suc cumbed. As soon as it was possible the firemen made their way iuto the servants' apart ments, where a most shocking sight awaited them. Revealed by the lanterns thoro were seen in various postures, and horribly disfigured and distorted by tho flauats. the bodies of eleven cirls. As first reported the number was much larger, even as high as twenty-two, but thus far, only eleveu bodies have been found and taken to the Morguo. Some of the bodies wero found lying in the bods, but a major ity ware lying on the floors, near the doors and windows, which Jatter wero coveted with a strong network of heavy wire, which prevented the oscape of those who sought egress in this direction. So strong were these barriers that considerable effort on the part of tho firemen was necessary for thoir removal. Two of tho bodies were locked in each other's embrace, and their flesh had been literally roontod. Margaret Fagan, one of tbe hotel servants, was, however, found terribly burned about the head and body in her bedroom, adjoining the elevator on tho top floor of the build ing. ' Thoro were six hundred and fifty gnests in the house, none of whom were injured. Eleven bodies have so far been removed from the ruins, all of them being the bodies of women. It is feared that more yet remained to be discovered. The loss to the hotel is about $150,000. Foreign Items. Terrific Storm. London, December 9.
