Tha London Field, one of the highest au thorities, says of sawdust: "Hitter the fyoi'ses on it to the depth of nine Inches, ra kiug off the damp and soiled parts every morning, and spreading evenly a little fresh removing the whole only four or five times a year. Its advantages appear to be many of which I will stato a few that givo it in my estimation, its greatest superiority over straw. ' It is much cleaner and more easily arrangod and of course much cheaper at first cost, making in the end an excellent manure. It is peculiarly beneficial to tho feet, affording them a cool, porous stuffing, a substitute for the soil of earth we always find in the hoofs of a horse at grass, and presents the nearest resemblance to tho liorso's natural footing tho earth. Wo have never had a diseased foot sinco saw dust was introduced into the stablo, now some years sinco. Horses bedded on saw dust are also freer from dusts and stains than when on ordinary litter, simply Lo calise sawdust is a bettor absorbant, porhaps and testifiy thoirapproval of it by frequent ly lying down foty hours in tho day. It has also the recommendation of being un eatable an advantage which all iu charge of horses with the habit of eating their lit ter, will readily admit." Cooked Cucumbers. " It does not seem to bo very genorally known," says an exchange, "that the cu cumber Is one of the most useful vegetables wo have, and can be dressed in a greater variety of palatable ways than any other except the tomato. It is better than squash and nioio delicate than tho egg-plant pre pared in tho same manner ; can bo stewed, friod, or stuffed, and, above all, can be par boiled, mashed up in batter and friod as fiittors, more pleasant and easily prepared than any other vegetable or fruit. Whon;a cucumber becomes just too old to use raw or for pickling, it is then at its best for cooking and may be used for that purposo even until tho seeds become hard. Last Milk from the Udder. Dr. Anderson says ho has found, by prac tical analysis, in one instance, that tho last cup of milk drawn from the cow's ud der contained sixteen times as much cream as the first one. This separation of cream takes jilaco iu the udder of the cow, espec ially if she is allowed to remain quiet for a Khort time previous to milking. If thoro aio thoso who doubt that this difference does exist between tho first and last drawn milk, their doubts will bo speedily removed by milking half a dozen cows and setting the first and last drawn milk in different "pans. t"An agricultural gentleman of more than ordinary intelligence, and whose the ory and practico are worthy of respect, informs tho N. Y. Tribunt that for thirty years he tried gathering grass while in blossom, and at various subsequent stages of growth, and ho invariably found that he got as much in bulk by the early as by the latter cuttings, while tho quality of the former was greatly superior, as shown by lis effect on btoek. It nnulo more bone, more butter, cheese, beef, veal. But to tlit ond that haymaking may bo finished before the grass is badly injured by stand ing too long, ho would start tho mower a day or two before the period of full bloom. 2?"A good flomo mado disinfectant is produced by dissolving a bushel of salt in a barrel of water, find with this salt water h'.ack a barrel of lime, which should bo wet enough to form a kind of paste. For tho purposo of disinfectant this homo mado chlorido of lime is nearly as good aa that purchased at tho shops and drug-stores. Vso it freoly about Binks, cellars, gutters ami-houses, and in this way provont sick ness, suffering and expense To Take Out Sluing From Mattresses or Feather Hods. Make a paste of soap and starch, and spread over tho spots j when dry sorapo it off with a knife, washing with a damp spongo as it falls off J if not clean put on another paste. This application, if re peated frequently uutil all discoloration aro gone, will purify any bedding. Oat Meal for Dysentery. Put a quartci of a pouud of oat meal,' an ounce nnd a half of sugar, half a teaspoon f ul of salt and three pints of water ; boll slowly twenty minutes, stir continually. . lie fore serving, add one pint of boiled milk, one ounce of butter and a littlo poun ded spice. , . , ;, -. tJT" A reader" asks how to koep cistern water from becoming stagnaot(or impure) during the dry summer weather.
