The I'roviilonco Journal says:. Jumes
O'Neil, who has served more than eight
years in the State Prison for a crime which
it in proven that lie was entirely innocent
ot, , was liberated on , Friday . afternoon,
shortly after the Senate consented to the
pardon, if pardon it can bo called. The
news was broken to O'Neil gently by his
counsel, W. B. Whitman, Esq., of this
city, who had thought best not to inform
him that efforts were being made for bin
release, that ho might not be disappointed,
nnd they were-at ilrnt too good news for
him to believe. The poor fellow passed
the outer door of the prison, for the first
time since his seutence, like one in a dream
and as he reached the street drew a long,
deep breath, with the heart felt remark,
" How sweet the air smells." After ho
began to realize that ho was really released,
he said he suffered more when told he
was free than when ho heard the scn
tenco of imprisonment of life passed
against him. Ho was taken in charge by a
brother-in-law who lives in Philadelphia,
and left with him on Saturday for his home
ii) that city. His parting wordB to his
counsel, ns ho was about leaving the earn,
were: "God bless you, sir; only for you, Id
be in the prison now, 111 pray for you; and
if you ever need a man to die for you, send
for'mc;" in a manner that left no doubt of
their sincerity, and which must give his
counsel a satisfaction that cannot be esti
mated by money, and compensate him
largely for tho time spent in his behalf.
During tho time that O'Neil has been in
prison he has acquitted himself well, nevor
having been punished a tingle day. The
confinement has worn on him somewhat,
and his mind is now in rather a weak state,
so that ho will have lobe cared for until
freedom strengthens him, which it is hoped
it will do. His brother-in-law who comes
well recommended, will havo the care of
him, and is trustee of whatever sum tho
Assembly my see fit to appropriate for his
use. O'NeiTs friends and family arc poor,
and it would be a simple net of justice for
tho Stato to pay him for the time ho has
been compelled lo serve it, at least, the
usual amount allowed to a convict working
out a fine, and costs, namely 83J cents per
day. Can anything less than this hot jus
tice '.' Mr. Whitman deserves credit for his
zeal and success in working up this case.
He first satisfied himself of O'Xeil's iuno
oor.ee, and then went to work to procure
reliable testimony fliat would convince
everybody; uo small matter, whou it is con
sidered that the affray hapiKmcd nearly Ion
years ago, and that the "witnesses were scat
tered all over the country, and many of
theui had since died.

Terrible Eruption of Vesuvius.
Dispatches from Naples say that tho
visw of Mount Vesuvius from this city is
now the grandest that has been witnessed
since the yoar ' 1031. Many ncrsons have
taken advantage of the panic among the
lople of tho towns which wero threatened
with destruction to take whatever goods
they could find, and tho government has
been compelled to order troops to those
places to prevent tho stealing of abandoned
property. In this city the Bourse has
closed, and business is almost entirely sus
pended. The people uso umbrellas to
protect them from tho falling ashes. Rain
is badly wanted, else tho crops will be de
stroyed. As the worst is now believed to
be over, the excitement of the people has
cousidorably lessened.
A sound ns of thunder accompanies
the discharges from Mount Vesuvius. The
wind is blow ing in this direction, carrying
dense clouds of smoke and ashes over tho
ity, the ashes fulling in the streets like
(.now, and has already reached a depth of
two or there inches. Tho rumbling insido
tho volcano continues, but no fresh craters
havo opened, and the lava has censed flow
ing. , In the afternoon showers of snnd
succeeded the rain of ashes, which was fall
ing in the morning. Tho eruption is ac
companied by fearful clectrio phenomena.
f.iglitning darts incessantly from the sum
mit, and iuakiugs of the mountain ore
more violent and froiiucnt. Thunder is
continuous. Thirul'ug cinders and stones
arc falling fast and thick in the town of
' Massa de ttoniuiM, which is entirely de
serted. There is a great constosnation
among tho Inhabitants of the villages and
towns which nre throatonod with danger.
It is asserted (hat many tourist wero
surrounded by the lava and have perished.

Dr. J. II. 8CI1ENCK, N. E. comer Blxtli and
Arch Streets, Philadelphia :
Respected Sir I take pleasure in adding
my testimony to that of the mnuy others who
have been cured by the clllcacy of Bclicnck's
Pulmonic Byrup, Sea Weed Tonic, and Man
drake Pills.
Consumption has been hereditary with my
family, most of Its members having died of it
at early aces. My mother and three brothers
died at the age of 111, ouc brother at 27, aud my
sister at 13.
I was, when about St years, seized with liver
complaint, w hich rapidly doveloped into Pul
monary Consumption. I was compelled to re
linquish my employment (that of a black
smith.) I consulted skilful and eminent physicians,
and tried many patent nostrums, but w ithout
success, so tbnt my friends wero sure that there
was no hope of my ro;ovcry, for I was reduced
from MO pounds to 101, and was not able to do
anything without assistance.
But what I now look upon as a Providential
Interposition, I was induced to try your rem
edies, and pluco myself under your treatment,
and so rapid and thorough wus my recovery,
that it seemed as tboiiKh soino superhuman
power was at work, and to-day I am ns well as
at any time during my life. I weigh 152
pounds, am 'M years old, and for noino time
have been regularly attending to my business,
bidding fair to live to a good old age.
1 am thankful to you beyond expresslou for
having placed me in a position wherein I am a
benefit instead of a burden to my family.
Your Mandrake Pill) are tho only medicine
I ever use uow. I think they are tbc best in
tho world.
I can refer you to hundreds of my neighbors

Dear Bir Please forward, per first

bottles Pulmonic Byrup.
Your medicines aro f such valuo that I can
not be without them In my household, a'.d in
fact no family should be without them.
I have given them a fair test, and openly de
clare them to be even better than you claim.
Very respectfully yours, Ae.,
W. A. WUITEHL'RST.
Philadelphia, Starch 4, 1873.
Dr. J. II. SCllENCKi Respected Blr I
take pleasure In awarding to you this certificate
of the wonderful cure your Pulmonic Byrup
and Bea 'Weed Tonic produced. My throat and

almost impossible for me to swallow my food.
I am on a visit to my uucie, Mr. cuarics

I commenced tuklng them, my throat under
went a ifreat change for the better, so that I
could cat my nieuls without any dlfllculty or
