Ac cording to the official report 118 persons were killed and forty-four woundod, but all tlie inhabitants wore left without shelter. Schcmacha is or rather was, a city of 25,000 inhabitants, and lies on the road between Tillis and B.iku, at tho foot of the Caucasian mountains about Bovonty-flve miles distant from tho latter city. Sclio macha is 2,310 feet abovo the Caspian and 2,000 above the Black sea, ami was former ly the aeat of government of tho provinco, which, however, on account of tho frequent earthquakes in tho region, was transferred, about ten yenrs ago, to Baku, on tho Cas piau sea. The inhabitants of Schcmacha are nearly all Armcanians. t3f A special dispatch from Paris to tho standard says a number of prominent Rus hians aro now in that city negotiating with , Polish refugees there for their return to their native country. Tho dispatch says the negotiations look to a reconciliation betweon tho Czar and tho disaffected Poles, general amncstyforall pastod'onsos and tho appointment of the Grand Duke Alexis to bo Viceroy o Jl'olawl. tW On tho 2!Hh ult., a tremendous land slide occurred, on the lino of tho Panto Railroad, South America, moving from its foundations and burrying the rond for a long distance under earth and rocks. It is believed that it would take two months work to restore tho road to working order. t3T"It is stated that tho French Govern mentis negotiating witli tho government at Berlin with a view of anticipating tho full payment of tho war indemnity, and there by securing the complete evacuation of tho French territory by tho German troops. tW A new telegraph cable is to be laid between Spain and England. A Terrible Affair. An awful tragedy was lately enacted a few miles from Dayton Ohio. A German named Leonard Morquant murdered his wife and three children. His wife was found lying on tho bedstead naked, choked ' to death. About 200 yards from tbo bouse, and close by a small stream, was found the youngest child, an infant, with its head smashed. A short distance further up tho stream were found the other two children, a boy and a girl, aged six and eight years, stark naked, but with no marks upon them. They were evidently drowned and their bodies aftowaids taken out of tho stream and laid on tho bank. Morquant was ar rested and Is now in jail. It is thought ho must be insano. Tho bistory of the ufl'air, which tho man, himself tells,is that a few days ago ho read a chapter, to his family, from tbo Bible, and then rising, accused his wife of being a witch and using witchcraft, and that his eldest daughter confirmed him in tho ac cusation. Ilo says on Saturday night lie told his wifo ho wanted the children to lcavo that, itud ho had his wifo stripped naked, and and knelt down and prayed for fifteen minutes. They then stripped tho two chil dren, and took them out and drowned tbem. and laid them sido by sido on the bank stream. They then dashed out the brains of the infant and left it lying in the woods, after which he returned homo and went to bcd, after lying tlioro fifteen minutes ho told bis wife bo wanted to send her to Heaven, and Immediately strangled hor to death. After that he rose and prayed until three o'clock in tho morning, when ho went to the nearest neighbor and told the whole story. Marquant is a German farmer, and has been in the country nbout uightecn years. Tho murdered woman was his second wife. A Narrow Escape.
