8 lje mco, Nero Blooinftclii, )o. A Norelty In Arctic Exploration. Mr. Octavo Pavy, the wealthy nnd nd vonttirnuB youiifr Frenchman, who is going to tlio North Pole, proposes to do tho jottr neyon a rubber raft. The raft is com posed of four kecl-sliapcd cylinders, fasten ed together on the decks by wooden slats, to which tho necessary masts and riggings are attached. It is so small that it occupies very littlo room in fact, M. Pavy carries his pack in a barrel, but it will carry about 10,000 pounds of freight besides the crew. M. Pavy is in St. Louis, on ronto for the Pacific coast; but finding tho Union Pacific road blocked with hiiow, will return to New Orleans, and go to San Francisco by somo other route. Ho will leave San Fran ciBco in the spring, and will steer for Pet rozavodsk, whero ho will take on board provisions, furs, dogs and reindeers. Sail ing through Behi ing'B Straits, SI. Pavy will hoar for tho land discovered by Captain Long, about ilvo hundred miles broad, which ho will cross in sledges drawn by reindeer and dogs, taking his boat with him. This land lies between 71 and 80 de gress of latitude, and will bo reached, it is expected, sometime in August. After crossing it, ho expects to find tho open Po lar Sea described by navigators, on which ho will embark and sail around to Green land and Spitzbergen If ho can. Tlmt Cancer Cure. Some sharp speculators in Pittsburg liavo been resorting to a shrewd dndgo for tho purpose of securing a largo amount of val uablo advertising without cost to them selves. The plan is to address to tho edi tors of newspapers a written letter, setting forth tho facts that tho writer is a man of sixty-two years of age, who for eight years was afflicted with cancer, which had eaten away his noso and was fast devouring his left eye, when ho began to drink " wild tea," putting the tea grounds on the cancer at night as a poultice. Tho result was a perfect cure, and as an evidenco of his grat itude for doliveranco from a horrid death, ho informed tho public that this "wild tea grows over the country generally." Now tho facts are, first, that " wild tea," as he terms it, is about as scarce as hen's teeth, if indeed there is sue,1! a plant, and second, that a party was lately detected in Pittsburg in putting up packages of this " wild tea" for the cure of cancer, an exam ination of the contents of which, proved them to be nothing more nor less than ground-up clover heads, and other refuse of hay-lofts, of which several tons were found on the promises. Another Terrible Storm. A dispatch from Chicago dated the 14th Inst., says: News from Sioux city says a fear ful storm raged in that section Monday afternoon and night. The weather was warm and pleasant till two o'clock p. m., when tho storm set in with great fury; the mercury fell 40 degrees in two hours; the wind blow a hurricane, accompanied by a blinding snow storm. It is feared that the sufferings in tho country have been fearful. Samuel Ellison, living 11 miles nut of tho city, loft here for home at four o'clock p. m., with a team, and his body was found this morning live miles out; he had frozen to .death. Other deaths from the storm are reported, but no particulars are known. Trains on tho division of the Illinois Central ltailroad are all snowed in. The weather is entensely cold, the thermometer indicating 18dcgrecs below zero. Owing to tho prostration of the telegraph lines by storm, nothing further has been heard in relation to tbo reported freezing 'f Spotted Tail and his band, but the report is generally discredited here. Marvelous Coon Accident. The Indianapolis News tells this: A Ver million county man met with a singular accident while hunting -coons. It appears that, having penetrated about a mile into the forest, he "treed" a oon up a large sycamore, fell another tree against it, and ascended about forty feet to the top. He found a coon had gone into a branch of the tree, and, whilo standing on the top of the main trunk chopping the limb, the decayed wood sank beneath his feet the tree a short distance below being hollow and he fell to tho ground insido the tree. Not returning search was made; there being a slight tuiow, he was tracked to the tree, and his axe being found sticking where he struck the last blow at the top, the nature of tho ease became apparent When "cut out" be was insensible from eold and exhaustion, having been in the tree fim Saturday morning until Sunday evening. A Curious " Itreach of Promise." The PiUburg Pott says: A narr has been tiled iu tho prothonotary's oflioe in a breach of promise case which preieuts some sin gulur features. Mary Gil more, the com. plainant, alleges that one John T. Corbett, of tills city, last year happened by chance to see her photograph, and so admired it that, though he had no acquaintance with hor, he declared he would marry her. She was theu living In Ireland, but so enamor ed was John of her " photo" that he sent over money to bring her out here. When she arrived lie professed to believe that she did not justify tho charms of the photo graph, and declined matrimony. Perry County Bank! NpouKlcr, Jimltln & Co.
