The family of a Dutchman in Iowa, hav ing frequent occasion to employ a physi cian, thu head of tho family hecaino quite familiar with the form of writing prescrip tions. Tho doctor was one of tlioso mixt ures of farmer, i-tock raiser, innl physician, not uncommon In llio country ; but exer cising very little care in tho management of his cattle, which told wonderfully against his pecuniary interests, whilo tho Dutchman's herd, being well fed and well housed, was in very lino condition. The doctor was not slow in observing tho dif ference, and suggested to tho farmer that ho thought something was tho matter with his cattle, and requested him to rido over and toll him what to do for them. The farmer very cheerfully promised to do so at a given time, and when that time arrived he was promptly at hand. It so happened that the doctor had been called away. Tho Dutchman, however, examined tho stock Tory carefully, and then looked in all di rections for suitable shelter and food with out finding cither. Deducing tho conclu sion that hunger nnd cold, with lack of care, were the only diseases w ith which tho cattlo were sufl'oring, ho entered tho office of the doctor and left tho following pro scription : "II Good shelterum, q s, Corn mcalum, q s, Pure waterum, q s. Apply corn niealiun in form of poultieo to mucus membrane of stomach and renew twico a day." Tho prescription worked wonders. It pleased thu kind hearted doctor, restoied tho stock to good condition, and paid a very largo share of the bill which had been incurred in doctoring the equally good naturedaud witty-Dutchman's family. Stagnant Water nnd Milk. It has been known for a long time that milk standing in a room where patients are sick becomes permeated with the subtle poison of tho disease. Contagion has also been spread through milk, by reason of persons recovering from sickness attending to the labors of the dairy. Tho kiuds of grass or fodder on which t'.ie cows feed also gives a peculiar flavor and quality to their milk. ' In addition to these facts, it has recently been demonstrated that tho most 'startling consequences may ensuo from the animals drinking stagnant water. Profes sor Law, of Cornell University, has ex amined with a microscope milk of an un usual, ropy appearance, and found it full of those fungi or vcgetablo organism that abound in stagnant water. On inquiry, ho found that the cows from which it came had only stagnant water to drink, and in vestigation revealed the fact that tho blood of tho animals teemed with these fungi, and that the cows were in a feverish, and unhealthy condition. Tho warning which this discovery ought to convey is u ry sim ple. It is tho duty of dairymen to uco thai their cattlo have a supply of pure, sweet water. They uso such a great quantity of water that a judicious concern for the health of tho community should enduce them to employ none but tho very cleanest. How 1o get Work Done ou a Furni. Every farmer is at times oppressed with a sonso of an overwhelming numbci'of things that requiro to bo done. Wo have seen a nervous man in such circumstances com mence ono job and before lie had got fair ly started, abandon it for somthi n that seemed moro pressing, merely to leave this in that same unfinished state ; and when night camo he had accomplished little or nothing, und passed homo tossing on a sleepless bed thinking what ho should do on the morrow. A young famier could not adopt a better rule than to repeat to him self every morning. " What soovcr thy hand finds to do, do it with thy might." and act on it. When a job is commenced finish before beginning another, but at tho sarno time, attend to tho little things. But if you happened to get behind, Btriko a lively gait, do one thing ut a timo, when It is done, take a little rest by immediately commencing another, and in this way ou will pull through in good timo. lure Tor a (.'old in the Head. Dr. Puiiod, of Franco, announces what he considers to be a new method of curing a cold in the head. It consists in inhaling through tho nose tho emanations of am monia contained in a smelling bottle. If tho sense of smell is completely obliterated, the bottle idiould be kept under tho nose until tho pungency of the volatile alkali is felt. Tho bottle is then removed, but only to bo reapplied after a minute; tho second application, however, tdiould not bo long, that tho patient may bear it. This easy operation being repeated seven or eight times in tho course ol'five minutes but always very rapidly, except Ihu first time the nostrils become free, tho sense of smell is restored, and tho secretion of tho irritating mucus is stopped. This remedy is said to bo peculiarly advantageous . to singers. ' " RAILROADS. Pennsylvania It. R. Time Table. NEWPORT STATION. On and after Nov. 12th, 1871, rasscnger trains will run us follows!
