The Senate held a short session on Tues day hist and made the nominations for State Treasurer and appointed a teller for the joint convention which was to bo held the noxt day, for the purpose of electing a Treasurer. On 'Wednesday a resolution was passed in tho Senate appointing a se lect committe to investigate the " War Claim" portion of the Governor's Message. Three ballots were had for a clerk and on tho third ballot Mr. Ilamersly, was elected by a majority of throe votes over Mr. Zeig lor. A joint convention was held at noon on Wednesday to elect uStato Treasurer which resulted in the ro-olcclion of R. W. Mackey. - In the House the petition of Luther Green and others contesting tho seat of Vr. n. Short, tho member from Warren was presented. On Thursday, the speaker of both branch es of the legislature announced tho stand ing committees and In the House a com mittee was drawn to try the contested election case of Short vs. Green. The House adjourned unfil Tuesday evening; previous to doing so, they concur red in the Senate resolution to investigate the " War Claim" matter. Mr. Buckaluw in the Senate offered a bill which was referred to a committee chang ing the manner of electing school directors. In the formation of the House committees we see Terry county is represented on four. Mr. Bhulor being placed on the committees of Agriculture, Accounts, Iron and coal, and Public Buildings. Prom Washington. On Tuesday last Mr. Cox of Ohio intro duced a series of resolutions in tho House recognizing the war between Spain and the Cuban colouics aud giving the latter the rights of belligerents. The resolutions were refeied to the committee on foreign affairs. Considerable of a struggle has been going on for a few days past as to whore the Re publican rre.-tldontial nominating conven tion shall be held. Several cities had del egates here setting forth their claims. Tho first Wednesday of June was fixed upon as tho tiino aud Philadelphia as the place of meeting. Considerable amusement was created on Tuesday morning by the fiict of the Homo being opened with prayer by a JewisA Rab bi, who kept his hat on while conducting dovotions. Several members wno did not understand thut he was a Jew, thought he had forgotten to take his hat off. Charges havo been made against Senator Clayton of Arkansas, by persons who state that his election was secured by improperly granting certificates of election to memlers of the Legislature. The charges are to be Investigated by a special coinmitltce. At a meeting of the Republics- execution com in 11 tee. Mr. i'ultou proposed tho fol lowing resolution : " That in view of the proposed re-uomin-ntion of the present Executive, this com mittee would resjectfully suggest to those holding commissions under the General Government the propriety of abstaining from seeking or accepting appointment as delegates to the National Convention." This very proper resolution was objected to and withdrawn, so it is evident that the ofliue holders intend to take a hand In re-uomlnating Gciu Grant. The only remedy for this method of getting a nomi nation is to adopt the one term principle t W The Prince of Wales is rapidly Im proving and U considered out of danger. Col. James Flsk Jr. j We briefly mentioned last week the fact that Col. Fisk had been shot and died from tho effoot of the wound. The shot was fired at Fisk as ho entered the Grand Central Hotel, one of tho most public places in the City. Stokes, who fired the fatal shot, it is al ledged, was Fink's rival in tho eduction of Miss Helen Josephine Mansfield, who had a suit on trial against Fisk for slander, in which she and Stokes were both on the stand as witnesses on Saturday. Miss Mansfield's suits and threats to publish her letters from Fisk have been the subject of protracted litigation and newspaper gossip for weeks. Fisk.it would appear.had,by his masterly manipulation of the machinery of the law, triumphed with injunctions in this, as on many other noted occasions, driving his rival to madness, with tho fatal result now chronicled. The career of Fisk is well known. A few years ago he drove a a podler's cart across the hills of Vermont. Ho has since passed through such a career as no other adventurer has ever run, always buoyant and nearly always successful, whether by fair means or foul. Mirs Helen Josephino Ma usficld, or Mrs. Lawlor, as sho is sometimes called, as the wifo of the actor of that name, is represented as a sweet syren, a gorgeours adventuress, whoso Bilks and diamonds and rare beauty matched tho meteoric brilliancy of the " Princo of Erio." Stokes, the assassin, is a married man, about thirty years of age, and is only known to the public recently in connection with tho Mansfield afl'air. The excitement in the 0th regiment of which Fisk was Colonel was intense, and the feeling against the murderer was very great. Tho following is the will mado by Fisk a few hours after ho was shot : 1. I give, devise and bequeath ull my estate and projierty, real and personal, except tho special legacy hereinafter men tioned, to my beloved wifo, Lucy D. Fisk, suoject nowevcr, to a trust to pay to my dear father and mother, jointly, or to the survivor of them, $3,000 a year for their support during the lifo of cither of thein : and further to pay to Minnio F. Morse and Rosio C. Morse each, f 2,000 a year during their lives, respectively, until marriage, when the annuity of the one marrying sliall cease. The property and estate afore said to vest absolutely in tho said Lucy and lior heirs forover, subject only as aforesaid, and the said trust shall not effect her right freely to dispose of and transfer any such property. II. I give and bequeath to my sister Mrs. Mary G. Hoookor, stock in the Nar ragausctt steamship company, of the par value of $100,000, for her sole and sepa rate use forever. III. I appoint my said wifo and my friend Ebcn D. Jurdon, of Boston, exec utors of this my last will and testament. In witness where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 0th day ef January, 1872. Jamkb Fisk, Jit. A Duel in Court. An unpleasantness has existed between Genoral Davis and S. M. Meok, lawyers, of Mississippi, sinco last August, when they appeared on opposite sides of a murdercase at Aberdeen, in their State. Davis was of the loud, boisterous and blackguard style of attorn oy, while Meek was, as his name denotes, a mild, unobtrusive man, and at that particular trial felt himself Insulted by his opponent. A few days since they were brought again into professional opposition at Columbia, Mississippi, when Davis tried his old tactics, and indulged long in offen sive language, which so irritated Meek that he could stand it no longer, and said, " I cannot endure your browbeating ; defend yeurself." Each drew his pistol, but Davi was too slow aud was shot dead be fore ho could get his weapon ready for use, tho murder taking place before the judge and a full court. General Davis was a colonel in the Mexican war, and during the rebellion a gone nil in the 70-day Mississippi militia Before tho war he was a member of Congress for two years, and had secured at home a fine reputation as as a criminal lawyer. IIo was about sixty yoars old Mock is about forty and stands at tho head of his profession in that State. A Remarkable ( use. John Hairing was overtaken by a train on tho Northern Road of Now Jersey, in narrow pass between two mountains, just lieforo reaching Nyaek. There is is only a a singlo track at this point, and tho train passes so near to the rocks on each side, that there was no room for Hai ring to tako refuge on each side, nor could the engineer stop th e train. As it approached, Harring leaped upon the cow-catcher, and seized hold of a flag-staff planted upon It to steady himself, aud would have been saved, but unfortunately the. stuff broke, throwing him under the wheels, by which lie was so se verely crushed that deuth ensued almost Instantly, tlPThe journals In Paris, in reviewing tho contributions of food, clothing and money received from foreign lands for the suffering it habitant of Paris since the war, praises the people bf tho United States for their unbounded Morality, anil for the judicious manner In win h tho proceeds have been distributed. Looking for Frauds. Tho recent Grand Jury of York county must have strong suspicions regarding the honesty of those who havo been handling the public funds of tho county, for ten or twenty years ' past, judging from the fol lowing petition which was signed by every memlicr of the jury The petition sets forth : " That during lato years the debt of said county has increased to an unprece dented and enormous amount without suf flcent evidence that there was occasion therefor, and without producing results at all commensurate with the expenditure of money that has been mado : that taxation Increased, and has iiccome enormous and burdensome : that the dobt of the county, so far as your Memorialists are informed, is near about the sum of three hundred thousand dollars : that public opinion is fully impressed with the conviction that this Is the result of ofllcial extravagance and corruption, and that tho accounting and auditing ofilcers of the county havo failed to do their duty : that it Is due to the people, upon wliom the burdens fall that an investigation should be instituted, and inquires directed to ascertain tho true cause of the state of things thus complained of, and that all persons, if any such there bo, who havo dishonestly or unlawfully used, or applied to their own purpores, the public funds of said county, should be com pelled to reckon ' for tho same, and repay tho amount with Interst." The petitions also ask for the appointment of Auditors with tho power to examine persons and papers and to revise and adjust accounts for each year sinco 1800. They request tho appointment of Thomas E. Cochran, Levi Maish and Charles B. Wallace. A Historical Scrap. Tho recent assassination of Fisk recalls some scraps of history one of which is tho following : Whon tho bill to legalize Drew's over- ssuo of Erie stock was first introduced into the N. Y., Legislature in 1808, it was de- fetated by a vote of 83 to 32. Within three weeks after, Gould, the partner of Fisk in these transactions, had visited Albany with half a million dollars in his pocket, and re turned without a cent ; but tho defoated bill was immediately reconsidered, and passed by a vote of 101 to 0 1 No wonder tho belief is "general and wide spread," that somo very cogent arguments were used to effect this suddon and complete chango of opinion ; iu other words, that Gould camo back with tho Legislature in his pocket in exchange for his half million. In some quarters It is now confidently as serted that Fisk's letters to Mrs. Mansfield ( which thore was so much anxiety, by in junctions, to keep out of court, and which wcro doubtless mixed up in tho causes which led to his assassination), contain among amorous matters, many particulars of his business transactions, and among them the number of votes he promised, and provided, at certain elections, in return for Legislative favors. Only a Coll of Hair. The Washington Capital says : When "they" wero removing the dead from St. Patrick's 'graveyard, a gentleman had his mother's remains, which had been buried for thirty-three years, brought up, and found that tho hair was in a remarkable Btate of preservation, and had evidently grown during this tiino. His wife noeding a chignon, and not having two hundred dollars to buy one of the quality she Jdesir- ed be took tho old lady's hair and present ed it to his wifo. She was charmed, aim got in the cars next morning and took It to a prominent hair-dresser in Baltimore, told tho story which was overheard by some ladies who wero being "frizzed" and had it made into a superb coil, which now adorns lior classic head. That's what the old lady cot for shuffling off that mortal coil. Wo su p. pose the coil might bo called hairs from the grave ! Death from Pork. A coroners inquest was recently held at Cleveland Ohio, on the body of Carl Mar tins. Thrco weeks before Christmas Mar tins purchased a carcass of pork. Some of the meat was eaten tho same day, and some made into sausages. About ten days later tho sausage was partaken of, and in a short time the whole family were taken sick. Martins died Sunday night. Mrs. Martins and her two children are now very sick, and tho former Is not likely to recover. Tho jury rendered a virdiet that Martins came to his deuth by eating meat infected with trichinun tjiirali. A (nick way of I'udreHHlug. Jesso Myers leaned aguinxt a shaft re volving three hundred per minute, iu a Muncy, Ind., slaughter house, lie un dressed in about ten seconds, but strange to say he was not at ull injured. Not a stitch of clothing remained upon him. New wardrolio was sent for, and ho contin ued Lis work as if nothing had hnppcncd. tW The captain of tho ship Windsor Castle, which run down a vessel iu tho channel and was reported to havo passed on without heeding tho orios of the drown ing murinars, has been examined aud ex onerated from all blame. tlP An arrangement has been mado for the introduction of American cars on Eng lish railways.
