FABM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Remedy for Short Hoy Crop., The hay crop is short from ono half to one quarter in innny parts of country. Tbo unparalleled drouth of last year fa vored worms, and in many meadows the grass-roots were entirely eaten up. May was a dry month, and the summer rains came too lato to save, the hay crop.1 The fall feed very likely will be good. Make the most of it. The richer meadows will yield a crop of rowen. In many places this is considered nearly worth loss. We know it to bo excellent feed for calves, sheep, and milch cows. . A few tons of rowen will help the winter 6toro Oat and wheat straw aro an excellent clement in cut feed.. If corn-meal or oil-cake is used, straw is a good substitute for hay. J. hen it is not yet too late to grow turnips. We raised a large crop on rich land last full, sown as lato as September 1st. They have two and a half months to grow. They need no cultivation and no topping. You have only to pull them as wanted, and feed whole to sheep or cattle..,- , No iood is more highly relished, and when given out one feed a day, they are a great help wintering stock. When thcrois dan ger of their being frozen into the ground, they .can be gathered and stored tops and roots together, . in, heaps,, under open sheds, or in the barn-cellar1 ' They can be kept several weeks without damage. Then a prime element in carrying cattle through the winter well is to have the cattle couie to the barn in high condition when winter begins. If you have not feed enough in the pastures to do this, it will be better to reduce the stock. We want also goad, warm quarters" "perfectly dry, and safe from currents of air. ' Pine boards aro a good substitute for hay.. A ton of hay may be saved to each cow or ox by a warm stable. Hearth fc Home. . v;' : i Good Soitps. j i i Soups, when proporly made, are yery wholesome and almost indispensable ap pendage to a good dinner. But how few cooks know how to ' make if - wholesome and palatable. To prepard'gbod soup re quires more skill and labor . than ('almost anypther prinoipal jHsh and Jew, ever learn, and those who know how seldom ever go to the trouble of making jt fight. In k majority of families we aro safe in saying nine out of ten really good soup is never eaten, or soup that is not very indigestible. They think that to be good it must look very yellow, and made so by half an inch in depth of grease on the top. Now the truth is, there should be do grease, if possible, about soup. It Bhould bo made of lean moat, boiled, or rather simmered, for a long timereay half i.- dozen hours then strained and boiled again, nA lit tle browned flour, prepared as the' 'Ger mans do their " burnt meal soup,", gives it a dark color. Above all things keep away grease from soup," commonly known as "fat." if you want the soup to digest in the next six or eiuht hours. -.':-' t A knuckle of veal, boiled in a gallon of water down to a jolly, can, when cold, bo cut into pieces and used as" stock" ' for several days, each time adding as much of the Mock is will make sufficient soup for the meal., To this, vegetables of near ly all kinds, cut up fine, oan be used with advantage say turnips, carols, tomatoes, also asparagus and peas, with barley, rico, etc The older the stock gets the better the soup, alwayf providing that it is well bottled, the vegetables thoroughly done, and the whole preserved sound in warm weather. '. '-imi:ii .'I . -i ! ' How Can I Raise Quinces. t To this question tbo Gernailown Tele graph says that they can be raised as easy as apples or pears, in a way we shall de scribe. Thoro is no secret about it. Get the "Orange" variety. Keo that they are entirely free of the borer before planting. Set six or eight feet apart in rich soiL ISaudage the stein with two . or three wrappings of old muslin of any kind of cloth, as fur dowq in the ground as possi ble, as ' the roots start out from near . the surface. Let this; bandage run six or eight iuches above ground, 'thon pllo tho soil compactly a couple of inches around tho banduge, aud ronew this early every spring. Fino, large golden quinces rival ing the largest oranges, will bless , your effort annually. ' i Should the borer by any means steal in, ferret thera out with wirej Should they, I however, got the advantage of you, and your trees become honey-combed, set out, again young trees, so thut by the time the old ones are gone tho young ones will bo finely bearing. We have raised , these quinces in perfection, but not caring for tho fruit they were removed, when they were about to dU foin the operations of tho worm. . 1 a v. ,.
