C T 151 SOAP, n FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS A Franklin County Fruit Farm. Mr. Tobias Martin, of Mercersburg, franklin county, Pa., has a fruit farm of 30 acres, with 5,000 trees, consisting of ' applo, pear, peach, and cherry trees, and I 3,000 grape vines. This ho named tho Franklin Garden, and it lias now been bearing for five years. ' .Last year he had an abundant crop at pears, peaches, nnd grapes, and wus not anxious to sell any from the ground, as he canned his fruit in gallon cans and then marketed it. His Susquehanna peaches averaged him 80 a bushel. Ho sent five tons to market. Ho realized $300 for canned fruit, which was sent to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Montreal, and even some to England. His land is a rich gravel, a little mixed with sand, lays ligh,on a southern slope, almost surround ed by limestone. Tho trees aro grown on a new and improved system, originated by Mr. Martin himself, the heads being eo low that for several years the fruit may all be within reach from the ground. Tho trees grow very fast, in one season making from three to five feet of wood in one summer. We measured the diam eter of a smoke-house tree, planted four years ago, which was 24 feet from one extreme to the other. Mr. Martin bought two adjoining farms in 18G5, of several hundred acres each, two miles west of Mercersburg. The land lies almost all on a south-western slope, nearly touching tho North mountain. A beautiful spring issues out of the lime-stone rocks from the south west corner of tho Southern farm. Tho water rushes down through the jutting limestone toward Mercersburg, where it is sufficient to turn a grist-mill. The land north of the spring consists of a loose gravel and sand mixed with small pebbles and flint, showing it to have been at one time submerged. Mr. Martin undertook tho formation and organization of a company to plant an orchard with 20,000 trees. With this object in view he visited "Borne influ ential men, among whom were Gov. Geary, H. M. Engle, Dr. B. Spangler, of Ma rietta, Pa., lion. J. W. Forney, editor of tne Philadelphia Prtst, llov. James Col der, president of Hillsdale oollcgo, Mich igan, Hon. T. A. Scott, vice president of the P. 11. R. company, and others, soliciting their co-operation. He met with success beyond his expectations, and in tho spring of 18GG he succeeded in obtaining a charter, with a capital stock of $100,000, of which $20,000 worth was sold in shares of $500 each. The remain ing $80,000 worth is still unsold, and not more than $10,000 worth will be offered, ns tho company prefer not to sell more than is necccssary to develop the property. None of the stock has ever been offered publicly,, but has been sold to chosen members. The tract of land consists of 408 acres, 175 of which has been plauted in apple, peach, and pear trees, and also grape vines, under, the personal supervision of Mr. Martin, who has been general superintendant of the farm ever since the organization of the company. It is worth a long journey to see this beautiful, thrifty young fruit farm, which is now beginning to bear fruit. The orchard is luid out in four sore blocks. These blocks are divided by avenues 42 foot wide, with a central avenue 100 feet wide. The avenues are all named one way and numbered the other, after the plan of the streets of Phil adelphia. Each of the four acre blocks is planted with some ono variety of fruit, and at the corner of tho block is an index board, showing tho number of trees, (190 in each block,)kind and date of planting, thus enabling the overseer to direct tho workmen to any block or troo on the furm. Tho trees are grown on the same sys tem as that practiced ou Mr. Martin's franklin farm. About GO acres are in timber. Tho yellow locust growing spon taneous, and chestnut is plenty on the adjacent North mountain. The remain ing 173 acres uro in cultivation for regu lar farming purposes, such as grain, pas turo, &o. There are ou the farms two farm houses and two barns ; the houses on the fruit farm are built of brick, and the farm buildings of the spring-farm are of limestone. There uro six other tenement houses upon the pluce, which aro oocupicd by the families of the day laborers. Drainage Equivalent to Change of Climate. Land drainage has been the subject of many remarks spoken and written all of i a favorable character, yet uj a system in i this country, it lias made comparatively j but little progress.
