t& It was a laconio letter from a lady
to her husband " I write you because I
have nothing to do ; and I conclude be
cause I have nothing to say."
S" A person pretending to have seen
a ghost, was asked what the apparition
said to him.
" How should I know 1" ho replied ; "I
am not skilled in the dead languages."
" Whoso pigs are those, my lad ?"
"Why, they belong to that 'ore big
sow."
" No, I mean who is their master V
" Why, that little 'un; he's a rare 'un
to fight."
Biddy," said a lady to her ser

fifgy " My dear Ellen," said a young
man, " I have long wished for this sweet
opportunity, but I hardly dare trust my
self to speak the deep emotions of my
heart; but I declare to you my dear El

" Never mind the ivoodshcd," said El

BSy Twenty years ago a Connecticut
man left a watch with a jeweller to be
cleaned and repaired, saying that he
would bo in town in a day or two, and
call for it. Last week the man called in
at the jeweller's and asked : " Do
you remember my leaving a watch with
you a number of years since, to bo clean
ed?" " Yes," replied the jeweller, " and here
it is."
JfcayAn imaginative young man, la
boring oyer the gradual encroachments of
womankind on masculine territory in the
matter of dress, breaks into song as fol
lows :
"They took our coats at llrst we hardly missed
'em ;
And then they aped our dickeys and cravats ;
They stole our sacks we only laughed and kissed
'em:
Emboldened, then they stole our hats;
Until, by slow and sure degrees, the witches
Have taken all our coats, hats, boots and
breeches !"

B8T An invetcrato stammerer one day,
upon a journey, stopped to dine at a ho
tel. On attempting to help himself to
pepper at the dinner table, ho found, af
ter a violent shaking, that there was no
pepper to be had. He turned around,
and, beckoning to the waiter, commenced :
" Wa-wa-wa-waiter, this pep-pep-p-p-pep-pepper
is som-som-something like
me."
" Why so, sir ?"
" To-po-poor delivery."
That pepper-box was soon filled.
JJS?A Cincinnati correspondent, re

of a huge Kentuckian, who, holding up a

this away 1"
" What for, sah ?"
" Because I'm afraid the darned thing
will get in my ear."
B"IIarry M'Arthy used to 'tell of au
Irishman who was seen at the trenches of
York town holding his hand above tho
earthwork. His captain asked :
" What are you doing that for, Pat?"
He replied with a grin and a working
of his fingers :
" I am feelin' for a furlough, sure 1"
Just then a minnie-ball struck his arm
below the wrist. Slowly drawing it down
and grasping it with the other hand to
restrain the blood, a queer expression of
pain and humor passed over his face as
he exclaimed :
" An' faith it's discharge I"
