Wind Northonot. • -7 4 '/RTI: milt., FIFTEENTH WAHD.—This morning, about half -past four o'clock, a fire broke out in a three-story brick building at the — 1 , 17 coiner of -Pennsylvania avenue and Fifteenth street: The structure is 40 by 90 feet, and is owned by John B. Matlack. The first and secend stories were—occupied by Edwin Harrington, manufacturer of engine lathes, hami-lathes, -upright drills, &c. The third story was divided into two apartments. The front room was' occupied .by Speak & Deakin, braSs finishers, and manufacturea„at optiCal and philosophical instruments,' and the back room by James A. Largy, manufac turer of_pearl buttons. The flames originated in [the front room on the third floor. The occupants had just moved in, and their machinery and stock Of instru ments bad not yet been unpacked. The fire burned stubbornly for about two hours, but did not get below the third story. The build ing was flooded with water, and Mr. Harring ton Sustained considerable loss thereby. His loss is estimated at $9,500. The insurance is $19,000, in Eastern companies. The loss of Speak Deakin is set down at $3,000, upon which there is no insurance,in consequence of Operations not having been comaiOncod.--- The loss of Mr. Largy is said to be heavy, and is only partly insured. In the building adjoining, Nos. 1505 7 Pennsylvania avenrreTthe occupants suffered by water. The first door is occupied by Goodell, Braun S.: Uo., maniffacturers of plain and fancy looms.. Loss, $2,000. Insured for 512,000. The second story is occupied by M. Riad, manufacturer of bookbinders' and printers' machinery. Loss, 5400. - Insured. The third tloor, is occupied by E. J. Hyde, manufacturer of coffee roasters and coffee mills. Loss, trilling. TheArigin of the fire is unknown, but it is attributed to spontaneous combustion among some old rags which bad been ,urd in oiling Machinery. . FLOATING • BOAT-HOUSE - BURNED. This morning, about twenty minutes past; 1 o'clock, the Washington Boat-house, located on the Schuylkill,nearly opposite , the headquarters of the Park - Officers was burned. The building was of frame and was built in a.highly - ornamental style. It belonged to Jacob C. Kiusley, who kept boats to hire. The flames were first ob served by Policeman Flick, who is stationed en the Wire Bridge. He gave the alarm and - the boat. of the Schuylkill Harbor Police was quickly on the spot. The staging around the outside of the house, and about twepty.boats, which 'were fastened on the 'outside, Were cut loose, drifted out into the stream and were saved. In the meantime the flames burned fiercely and-rapidly, throw ing out a very bright light, - sinlicient to enable one to distinctly read a newspaper at a consi 'demble distance from the scene. The boat house was burned to the water's edge.' Several boats, anti all of the oars belonging to the boats owned by Mr. Kinsley-,--were consumes}. The loss is'estimated at 53,000, upon Whigh there is au insurance of 52000. There is a pri vate watchman employed at the house, but at the time of the fire be was not about, haviUg been away about two hours. WATER IN GERMANTOWN.—The German town Chronicle announces that Wingohocking creek is to be made available as a source of supply of water to the people of Gerivarowu. Mr. Morrell, Purveyor of the Germantown Vdrks, called upon, the xroprintors of the factories located in the vicitrity,and requested that they desist from allowing the dye water from their establishments to, empty into the stream. This request,with a single exception, was complied with. The construction of the temporary works will he commenced forth with. Purveyor lqorrell conferred with the Chief of the 'Department, and the point of the creek selected,'s between Haines and High streets.to A tem rary dam wilt constructed I ) by throwing a reastwork acrom the meadows at this point. A portable engine will be placed at a convenient spot, and a pump brought into requisition. The pipes will connect with the Haines street water main. At, the Ger mantown Works the water is still very low, and citizens should therefore continue to be as economical as possi tile in its use.
