The most Parisian of all the Parisians has just died. 11. Nestor Rogueplan, the late editor of the Figaro, the director of the Varietes, the Opera, the OpEra...comigne, and finally of the Chidelet, was born in 1504 ; but nobody knew his real age until his death, for he was most careful neither to speak of it nor even to let it be seen. his dress, his manners, and even his face were calculated to deceive on this point his best friends. M. Roqueplan has always been of opinion that advanced age is neither fashion able nor artistic, and that it was an offence to the aesthetic feelings .of .one's fellow-beings to let it be seen. Nobody knew Paris so well, nobody . loved At more, and nobody has been so 'servilely devoted to all the caprices of that. capricious city. During the .last years a slight twitching of one eyelid and of the up per lip somewhat altered the lively expression of his face, but in another respects he remained still the truest representative of the beaux of the reign of Louis Philippe. Few things be came ever really popular in a certain part of Parisian society if 'they did not enjoy 'the ap probation of M, Rogueplan ;just as few witty botileviad words have ever come into circula tion without - - being created or endorsed by him. Parleine, Lorette, Petit 0.614- are his creations. A pecoliarity. of Nestor llogneplan *ins'tkit-lie had a eglieetion-- - 01 untiniffig-pans. Roqueplan was born:at Malemort ;(13onelies du Rhone). In youth he studied for the bar; but towards the end of-the- Restoration he tried some lite rary work, and in!company with . Latouche, becarhe oue of the editors of the old Figaro. But that satirical paper had so many prosecu tions to answer that M. Roqueplan left it in ,1832, and devoted 'himself almoSt exclusively .to • the theatre—in the beginning merely as a In.l.B4.o,.however,.the Ministry.oft, f.Csred ,him' the direction of the Varietes, and that house has scarcely ever had such a sue-• cess, as under his management. In 1847 he passed to the Opera, where be Il i ad to, make hitrway through the hard time of the crisis which followed the Revolution of Febtuyy. It was he who brought out the Prophete, Saphp; and the Vipres Siciliettnes. With his Management also. are connected the names of Alboni, Cruvellii and many others.
