TILE BEDFORD STREET DISTRICT.-At
meeting of the Board of Health, this after
noon, the following report was received from
John E. Addicks, Esq., the Health Officer :
. " Since the last meeting of the Board I have
daily visited --the- Alaska-Street- District, and-
beg to report that every duty la promptly per.
formed, - and the sanitary condition of the
- whole district is very much improved. No

effort or action will be relaxed, bet continue
with full effect as long as any necessity may

occasion, and leave us much less to do'than
formerly by their own action.
" The sick are being now pronlptly re.-
ported, and iii every case, when required
the houses are thoroughly cleaned and closed
Cellars . and rooms coming under the late or
der of the Board are closed., after cleaning, as
fast as diseciered.
• Since my lan - rep-ort--1-regret-tesay;-I
. have taken three cases of fever from the
prison on Thursday and two cases on Friday.
I have no report to-day, and trust it will not
increase in thatinstitution
"l have again called the attention of the
Building Inspectors to the old rotten shanties
and rookeries, and also exposed privy-Wells.
They have assured me that- everything we
suggest shall be done, and they expect an
or
der from the Court to-day. .
Dr. H. Earnest Goodman, Port Physician,
reports eight cases of relapsing fever sent to
the Hospital yesterday, and about the same
number, with two froth the.prison, to-day. He
accounts for the increase partially: by the, fact
• that the peo_ple are now-promptly repOrting
sickness at the Mission House. •
_The_report of Dr. J. Howard Taylor,_physi
Municipal -
clan in charge of. the Hospital, sub
mitted to the Board of Health to-day, shows
that sixty-tivecases of the relapsing fever have
been under treatment in the Hospital, and five
patients have.died.
Inquiries having been made as to the courge
to be purstied to get a patient admitted to the
Municipal Hospital, under the charge of the
Board ofillealthy the Health Officer thinishes
us with the following stidernent : .
The Hospital is solely for the use of sick by
contagious diseases of a dangerous nature.
very p =ysician is_ iequired

notice at the Health Office of such a case
under-his practice. The patient will be sent
to the • Hospital without loss of time, as
the Health Office is connected by telegraph
Avith_tho Hospital, so that the ambalance. can .
be sent for the patient promptly , .
And, again; if any private citizen is aware
._____or,supposes_the__existence_of_such_a__case_AL
sickness, if he will - report the matter at the
Health Office it is the duty of the HealtkOtli
eer, by special statute law; at once to instruct
the Port Physician to examine and report the
. facts of the - case to him;and, on that. report,
it is his further duty to have the patient re:
moved to the Hospital incase of need.
As soon as the Board of Health, were in
formed by the Board of Guardians f the Poor
- that they had no moreroom for patients suf
fering from relapsing fever, they at once
opened their hospital for such cases in add,-
tante the others they had already under treat
ment, and their ambulances have daily been
making two or three tripS from the infected
district.

THE FEVER D 'STRICT—THU DISEASE
Sranantrro.—The relapsing fever, so far
from disappearing ;rum the Bedford
street district, is rapidly spreading, and
to-day is raging in sections which hitherto
have been free from it. Six patients were
taken tai the hospital from Bedtord street this
morning; and the ambulance was called into
service to take two men, sick with the fever,
from Moyamensing Prison. We need hardly
say that the appearance of this disease in the
jail is a cause for grave alarm. The warm
weather of yesterday and to-day has given a
marked impetus to the disease, and has justi
fied the most serious fears for the conse
quences when the weather Becomes hot.
There iti ' dvery reason to believe that delay in
enforcing most energetic sanitary measures
will insure the spread of a frightful epidemic
throughout the city. •

A NEW NORTHERN ROUTE—CHANGES ANI)
'FACILITIES OF THE NORTH PENNSYLVANIA
Banat()An.—The summer time table of the
North •PennsylVania Railroad, which goes
into operation : on Monday, May 16th, shows
considerable change in the running of the
trains. The popularity of this line, as shown
in the enlarged travel, incident to the con
tinual growth of the country through which
it passes, and that of the many citizens who
seek its delightful country-resorts during the
summer season,
as well as in the increasing
tide that sets Northward seeking the new
outlets formed by its several connections, has
caused such ademand upon its resources as
to induce the President to order the addition
of several new trains. both local and through,
to accommodate the varied wants of its
numerous patrons.
The new line, opened by this road in con
nection with the Lehigh Valley and Erie Rail
ways, to Butialo,Niagara Falls and the Lakes,
reaches Buffalo several hours in advance of
the former time table, passing through a noun
trrrernarkable for the variety, grandeur and
picturesqueness of its scenery, and will, no
doubt, attract many tourists during the coin
ing summer, who wish to vary from the beaten
track of travel. By a recent extension of the
Lehigh and. Susquehanna Railroad, a new
route has also been opened into the Catawissa
region, saying considerable time and distance
in the run from this day to Williamsport.
Attention is asked to the advertisement in
another column, as important changes have
been made.
