,yr-Q,-r~ae:ct ~.~Rwi:Cc..~ ITALIAN OPERA AT THE ACADEMY. The ngie Fl n, Carlotta Patti's . flrst appearnnbe iri, opern in this city,•last evening, xnuSt.lmve occasioned tOilSiderahle disappuintment to all lAA the •ogroscenti. And by the 6 remark it is not in tended to impute any personal' responsibility to Miss Patti.for such ayesult. This', in Many respects, Wonderful singer did all that-fell -to her share marvelously well. It may well be doubted if the lady for whom it was ori ginally written, could_ have done better with this ingeniously difficult part; neverthe less; the - role at best, at( • uninteresting one, and as things are always managed on the operatic antic the " Queen of the Night" is never seen atter the second act. "'lbis is the disappointment referred to which those are sure to experience who are only at tracted to the opera house by the promise of Patti in opera, and who exp.et to - _see her the central dramatic figure in alive 7 actlyric play; from the passion of the first act to the poison of the last. iEs Patti has sung the great aria in the second act very fr n equently here, and, ,save the infuien of some dramatic expres ' siou in ber .rendering of it last evening; there is little to . add to. • our former praise of hei consummately artistic vo- ' calization. - Beyond this she has : little to do, so that it is not possible to say after all . what capacity Miss Patti possesses for cptra. All that she did last night might have been, and_indeed has been done with ,conaleffect in the concert room. . Habelinann surprised -*even - - his- ad mirers, his excellent singing — of the noble tejlor_ :aria_ in the first act, in which there was evidence of the proper feeling and . adequate study. He has never done better: For the rest, Mr. Herrmanns --wasp perhapsythe most-unsatisfactory Sarastro .that was ever• heard; and the immortal beauty of the music of the part was quite lost ihrongb his most slovenly attempt to'interpret it. Mozart, of all composers, to be' treated thus, and by one of his own countrymen; 'Of Canissa, , Dziuba and Formes in their parts, we need only say they reached the dead level of respectability, and that the- duet be tween the latter was creditably sung, and justly occasioned a repetition. The orchestra is composed of excellent material, and would, VC incline to believe, have done much better - with a conductor of more experience than Mr. Theodore Ritter, who did not distinguish himself as much as lieal - waydoealnlitiffer= formances upon the piano. DIR.A MATVC. "Dutch tkancuy'et the Atch • Mr. Jos. IC. Emmet appeared at-the Arch street , theatre 'last night, in a play entitled Fritz ;or our Cousin German. Mr.. Emmet sustained the character of " Fritz" who is supposed to be, a German emigrant who - speaks broken English of the deplorable kind. Thrdrama is not worth criticising. It was bung-togetherleir_the_porpnse of_givingzAts., Emmet a chance to play the part of a Dutch • man ; audit ddertiot•ecintain - a - personage or an' incident that - , entitles it to praise. "Fritz" • himself is not specially interest ing either. He seems to have been suggested by Jefferson's - "Rip Van Winkle;" but the essemblance extends no further than 'the use of brciken English by both. Mr. Emmet plays upon the mouth organ very nicely, and he sings such interest ing ballads as "The Pologna Sausage - Boy," " 0 Schneider how you vas ?" and " Dat Gre cian Bend," in a manner that excites the laughter of his.audiences . ;- but whether-such elegant •accorrplishments• entitle him to pbsi - Ilion as a comedian, and a place upon the stage of a first:class theatre, is a question that can easily be answered. Mr. Emmet will repeat his performance this evening. American Borleatine at the Chestnut At the Chestnut Street Theatre, last night, Mrs. Oates's company produced a burlesque . ontilled The Fair One with the Monde Wig. This extravaganza is pot by any means as amusing as the piece which has held the, stage of this theatre for several weeks past ; and un less an abnormal fondness for stale puns, forced wit, discouraging humor and melaa rholy fun is developed in the minds of theatre goers for this especiarbccrision, we imagine Vibe piece will not enjoy amazing popularity. The most amusing, thing in the entertain ment is the pantomime in which Mr, Hernandez appears as "Clown." This gen tleman has very few equals - in this piculiar kind of business. He can contort his body into more singular shapes, and distort his countenance more comically than any other individual that we know of upon the stage. He might even make the burlesque amusing if he appeared in it. This we should topsider an evidence of the possession of positive genius. It is advertised that ten thou sand dollars were expendeed upon this piece. — As - the - evidences of - this extravagance are not perceptible in the scenery and costumes, let ns hope the manager distributed this grateful amount of cash among the nees., supernu meraries. Irish Comedy at the Walnut Mr. and Mrs. Ranaly Williams appeared at the Walnut titieet Theatre, last night, in the drama The Fairy Circle, or Con O'Cgrolun's Dream. This well known play embodies por- Mons of the beautiful fairy mythology of Ireland, which contains fairy lore'aud Ingends richer, more poetic and more romantic than that of any other modern nation. •The super natural portiOns of the play are surrounded by structure which gives amusing representa- Mons of that, imaginary life of the Irish peasantry which Irish dramatists and novelists are-so fond of depicting, and it possesses a great deal, of interest, even for the fastidious playgoer. Mr. Williams played his customary Irishman with the customary humor, vivacity and .hearty freedom, and Mrs. Williams also gave a delightful personation. The entertain 'relent concluded with the familiar play, ',The Custom of the Country. The whole bill will Trill be , repeated this evening. At his trial, the Duke of Moutpensier put in the following admission and justification : " For a long time the Infante Don. Henri, do Bourbon endeavored to provoke rue. On the 21st of December. 1868, he miblisbed his first letter a copy of which is annexed, 'in Wkich.l. don't know which be tried to insult most, my 'aiicesters, my familY i or myself. On the 14th ofJanuary of thepresent year he imblished his second liiteer,`direeted the Regent, in which he repeated the grossest insults against me. Not:: living, in, the place where fie- published these writings, I did not tryto require explanations from him respect ing them; but onitbe 7th,itlt., both of us 'being in Madrid, he published a fly-sheet entitled .A los Montpensieristas, which' was circulated with, great profusion in' all parts, and was even:printed in some of the newspapers..
