TEE Rev, Dr, , Broo)ca, pastor of the Church of the Messiah, Locust and Juniper streets, has been preaching a series of sermons to "Non-Church-goers.' On last Sunday evening he considerki %hit Rem edit,'! fa which, deg fessing the difficulty of awakening the public to a becoming religious consciousness he con sidered at length the expedients which had been resorted to in the 'way Of free chorales ' , theatre experiments, &e., which had proven to be failures, because they ministered to the disease which they were seeking to cure. AB prominent amciag the iemedies, he urgecUa more vital Christianity in our churches ; a wise home instruction; a better atiministra tion of our Sunday schools, which should be matle se attractive as to win more to-the batik of attendance ; a more reasonable estimate of what should be expected of ministers ; an or gariized effort to bring' Outsiders ir4olthe' church by a systematic and thorough district ing and canvass of the city by the churches and stated his belief that if such an% orgaid . zoci effort wire wade by all the religious &Tama tions of Philadelphia to bring children into the Sunday schools and outsiders ipto the church, and if this. were done in a Christian and not a sectarian spirit, it would add 'oci, ooo souls to the , number of' habitual clitirch- g oes: ' the great reinedy fig topretteh :pnrie Christianity, which shall ccimmend Itself to the reason and'ettinthod sense of ' the in4iple; to make ell that belongs to the church and its' services attiactivo, lbeautiful and elevating and adapted to the highest and purest aspira. tions and needs of mankind, CITY suLuvriki. —A special meeting of the Stockholders> of the Philadelphia Citizens'' Passen, ger Railway Company (Cheatnnt and Walfiut streets) was' hela yesterday, in Rom No. 2'4, ,Merchants' 'Exchange, Charles = Camblos f presidirig, and William W. Colket acting as Seeretarv. The object of the meeting was to take action upon - the proposed lease of the ,Philadelphia , and Darby Railway:by' the Philadelphia CM zaps' Railway Company, and to purchase a lot of g;rotind.' The report of the Board ofDirect ors of the Philadelphia Citikens' Company sets forth that the number of passengers carried ,over tbe,Darby road for the year's 1860, 1867 and 1868, " was 291,- 967, , 303,621 and 379,285 respectively, and that an increase of travel is anticipated from the rapid improvement of the section of the city through which this road passes. The' franchises of the' Company give the right . to extend the road to any part of West Philadel phia. Another consideration was that all the travel over this connecting road would. be, con 'centrated unon. the Citizens' road, so that under the present system of exchange tickets 41 cents would be realized on all city passengers. It is a fair presumption that two-thirds of the whole number of passengers carried will avail them selves of this arrangetnent, -- as the exchange tickets are good.only on the Citizens' bad, and taking the travel of 186 S as a basis, this would add 250,000 passengers to those "carried 'over the Citizens' road.' to . , Looking the' future, it is apt unreasonable to anticipate the erection of More bridges be low:Chestnut street, .and the creation of new railways; but 'notwithstanding this, the travel to the .city'from : Darby would be confined principally. to this road. They therefore re commend the ratification of the agreement, ac companying which Was h: certified copy of an act of Assembly 'giiing the 'Philadelphia and, Darby Railroad Company'full ppwer to execute.' such . a. lease. The Main points of the lea,Se:4e :lS follows:. - . The lease to continue ior 999 yea,rs., from . January 1, 1870; the corporate existenee•of he Philadelphia and - Darby Company to be ;:ept in force; the franchise to be , transferred to the Citizena' Company; the railroad, a sin gle track from Darby to Market street, 5 miles and 225 feet in length, provided with sufficient tornouta to allow the cars to run, on ten minutes' time, the present time being thirty minutes, will be operated by the Citizens' Company ; the liVe stock of 40 horses ; also, 18 ptissenger cars, and all other personal property to pass under the leaSe ; the stable, having a front of 410 feet on Darby road, and a depth of 445 feet, to be conveyed in fee 'simple; Subject to a ground rent of $B6O per annum, and is, therefore, not in the lease ;,the sum of $43,000 first mortgage bonds unsold are passed, under the lease available for fart lier,•iraprovements.r The conditions imposed, upon the Citizens' Company are 'the semi-annual 'payme . nt of $4,000, or $B,OOO per annum, befog a four 'per cent. dividend 'upon the capital- stock of the Philadelphia. and Darby Comp9.py, lug all the legar taxes; the sum of, .$440 to be annually contributed to the expenses of the corporate drganizatioh of the Philadelphia! and Darby Company' ; 1 the 'Citizens' . Upcin the $5 ,000 seven per cent. mortgage amounting to $3,000, per annum, and to pay the priveipal; maturing in 1887 ; the tatees µpen earnings, and assigned property to be paid by the Citizens', Company. THE PHILADELPHIA unrAinnus. We are in receipt of the following communi cation from a responsible party in Philadelphia, in defence of the retailers •of coal in that city, which we cheerfully assign a place iii this. columns.: " In your to-day's issue you speak of the ex orbitant prices asked by the retail coal dealers of Philadelphia, and say ' the days of these sharpers are numbered.' In justice to them I ask you to look at these fads, Which viii piove to you that your statement is unjust: Lehigh Stove Coal at Mauch Chunk, 75 North Penn. "The custom of the retail trade here is and has been for the past five (5) years to advance and decline as the wholesale, trade does, awl it. is 'invariably done. 3 I IMO you with pabllsli the above fads." We hare no desire, certainly, to be "unjust" to anybody, and our correspondent fails', to convince us that we have been so in this in stance. It may be reasonable to ask con milers to pay from $215 to AK. ) , 40 pet• toil more fur coal than its actuatcoit :in the eity,'and Ro run up"the price to $8 00 and $8 25, when ht New York (which is thirty-fire miles farther than Philadelphia from this place) it is being put into cellars for $d 50—this may all be fair ; but we apprehend there will be seine difficulty in making the fact clear to those wlio are ex pected to submit to it. If Philadelphia retail ers cannot deliver coal from the Itiorth Penn- sylvaula Railroad for less than 'sl 40 they should take a lesson from certain New York dealers on the subject. • lIIRACLE.
