GRASSHOPPERS AND JESSAMINE.—The vege table and the animal world have been so completely deluded by the extraordinary mild ness of the present season that they have come out in their full spring suits. in very mid winter. At this moment several lively young grasshoppers are crawling about on some fresh grass, upon our desk, evidently puzzled to know' what it is all about. They have a Sleepy look about them, as who would say, 4, You have waked me too soon, I must slum ber again." But they are veritable, living green grasshoppers, the greenest, in a moral 'or mental point of view, we have ever seen. It is unnecessary to say that these insects come from New Jersey. No Pennsylvania grasshopper would have been so egregiously taken in. • And then we have received several sprays of the yellow jessamine, in full bloom, from plants growing in the open air, in this imme diate vicinity. We need scarcely add that these beautiful flowers come from Pennsyl vania as well as from New Jersey. The Key stone State is not to be out-done by her trans . Delawarian rival in her botanic beauties. Grmshoppers and jessamines in January Ikave probably never before been seen in Philadelphia; certainly not within the memory of this generation. The ancient re cords give two or three winters almost equal to the prebent one, but none of them speak of n resurrection of grasshoppers in January. .1790 opened without frost or ice, with boys batbing •in the Delaware, and files plenty in the B.ouses. In January, 1793, shad were caught in the Delaware, and the extreme temperature of the weather is said to have ex ceeded all previous records. In 1827-8 the winter was remarkable for its mildness. The navigation of the Susquehanna and, Juniata was uninterrupted, and plowing was' common sell through the winter. - Shad were caught in the Delaware early in February. We do not remember any winter since that time equal in mildness to the " Grasshopper" winter of 1809-70. ROBBERY AND ARSON.—This morning about about half-past four o'clock a man who' gave his tame as .Lewis Moore entered the dwell ing, No. 1410 Lombard street, by brePking in the cellar window. Seven or eight coats, which had been packed away, were got out, a lot of books and other articles were, gathered to gether and shoved out on .to the sidewalk. Moore, it is then alleged, set Ore to some com bustibles and vacated the premises. As he got out of the window he was captured by Po liceman Hagan, whose attention had been at tracted to the house by the odor of burning material. On his person a big dirk-knife was found. Moore will have a hearing at the .ientral Station this afternoon. CLEAN STREETS.—The streets of the Fourth District, comprising that portion of the city south of South street and west of Broad, have been thoroughly cleaned by the Contractor, Daniel Mcßride, during the past week. This 5s the first time, in the minds of many of the inhabitants, that the district has been in such present a good condition, and Mr. Mcßride de - serves commendation for changing the order of things which has ruled so long. A PUSH-CART TlllFS.—Richard li:ewe was arrested yesterday, at Fifth and Federal streets, upon the charge of having stolen two push-carts. He seems to have a mania for ap propriating such articles, and, it is said, has stolen about thirty during his life. He has al ready served a term of imprisonment of 18 months. This afternoon he will have a hear lug at the Central Station.
