Saturday, November 27. 1869.4 |0’ Owing to an nmiHual pressure of adver tisements 10-tlay, we have been obliged to transfer a nninber of them from their usual places to the inside pages. THE MEDICAE HUDDLE. An old correspondent writes to us: ‘‘Are you net in error in condemning our Medical Col leges for advocating separate clinics for the two sexes?” It js difficult to imagine how lan guage could more explicitly define the posi tion oi the Evening BuLtETiN, and indeed of the public press generally, in favor of sepa rate clinics than lias already been done. We advocated separate clinics long before the me dical gentlemen moved in the matter at all, and «f course we have not condemned them for doing the same thing. No word has been writ ten in this paper that, can be so construed. We have criticized, as. we have the right , to do, what is almost universally regarded as a grave failure to meet their proper responsibility on the part of those who, either from old preju dice against, the whole idea of female medical education, or from an ! ovor wepning anxiety to conciliate some very ill-mannered students, have thrown all the weight of their influence on the side of a series of unpardonable insults to a number of defenceless women. The question of mixed clinics or separate clinics is altogether a dif ferent issue. The press and public opinion went much in advance of the medical profes sion upon that point, and it is somewhat re markable, after the very distinct sentiments expressed repeatedly in this paper on the-sub ject, that any intelligent reader should have fallen into the 'error of our correspondent. We have gone this much farther than the signers of the medical manifesto, that we have recommended to the Hospital authorities the establishment of an extra .separate clinic, for the women. If the medical manifesto' is sincere in its argument, its signers ought not only to agree to this recommenda tion, but ought to unite in presenting it to the managers of the Hospital. lint the official records of the Philadelphia Medical Society for bid the hope that its members are ready to tol erate even a a separate instruction of women in medical science. In this dilemma, we believe that the women themselves should come for ward ami cut the Gordian knot by asking, on tlmr own-account , a separate course of lectures at tlic Hospital. Tlio managers can treat With them, without loss of dignity on either side, and if it requires a little magnanimity or gene- rosity on the women’s part to make What will undoubtedly be claimed by the men who drove them from'the lecture room as a concession to lheir clamor and misconduct, so much the bet- ter for the position of the former, and so much the worse for that of the latter, in the estima tion of the public. The young gentlemen of the University and Jefferson -College have published a series of preambles and resolutions which we gave in yesterday’s 'paper. We have always been ready to give tlie.se young men a fair hearing, and as their references botli to the ■women and to the press of the city siiealc so clearly for themselves, we leave them to the judgment of oiu rcadei-s without further note or comment. THE IIIIGIf-BACKED-CAR. The “High-backed car,” lately introduced on the Spruce and I’ine streets road, seem to meet with steadily increasing disfavor, and we are in the daily receipts .of requests from old citizens along the line that we will plead for them with the railway company forrelief. The High-backed car” has certainly some very serious disadvantages to the public, whatever ben&it it may afford to the company. Tiie principal faults about, it are :' First, it requires 'the driver to have eyes in the back of bis head. He must give his undivided attention to the horses before him, and the passengers behind him. Comparatively few drivers aye con structed on this pattern. Second, it requires the passengers, in case there is a crowd, as on opera nights, to be transparent, in 6'fder that the driver may see wliat is going on at his rear. This is very inconvenient, -especially to elderly and corpulent ipeople. Third, it requires ladies to go armed, to protect themselves from mate ruffians, in toxicated or other wise dangerous or-offensive.- To be sure, there is some doubt whether it iB quite delicate for ladies-in Philadelphia to ride in the same ears with rueu, hut they will do it, and even 'Mr. Fox’s model detective cannot ride on ere 17/ car. Fourth, it requires acrobatic agility on the part of infirm passenger's to hop off.and on tire high step attire rear, before the driver, who is usually more of a Polyphemus tan ,»ji Argus, starts Ins impatient steeds Fifth,.!'- tempts weak-minded ineu and women to steal. This department was formerly in tb'e hands of the conductors, and its transfer to the .general .public does not tend to produce a wholesome effect. | The disadvantages to the company are of no special intfiwwi to us or to the public, but they may fee briefly summed up in this wise: First, the u High-barked car” discourages people from riding.' Jjombard and' Walnut street already feel the benefit of the innovation. Second, if it does not reduce the receipts, it indicates an awful amount of coniUictorial de_ '- W rtf. yjvi >t -y pravity along tliat line. If fewer paMengerepro . <luce more money, some of the impecunious eendnCCOrs mriet have drawn inordinately ppori tie former 'We believe the luge ma jority of the conductors are civil and decent, and would be lionesfc if their employers would allow them to'be. If is inoro. the fault of tUe companies than of tlreir employes that there is any occasion to .try';aiiy such experiment as that of tlic unpopular‘‘iligli-backed car.” As it is always unsatisfactory to pull down without being, able to build up, WC offer this suggestion to the railway cOnipahieS. Put the money-box at the rear, instead of the front of the car. Then put a civil conductor on the ordinary rear platform to make change and at tend to the.passengers. He will hot handle the lares, and so will not he tempted to dishohesty. Then pay him a decent salary, and the com panies will soon bo able to do what they have all been sighing after so long, put down the farex. • WESTERN BAILKOAD ' ENTERPRISE- Nothing marks the national enterprise of the American people so strongly as the rapid ex tension of the internal communications be tween all sections of the country. As we not®> from time to time, the fresh additions to ** The iron threads we spin That weave our web of towns, we are receiving new illustrations of the wonderful development, of the business erergy and enterprise of the people, especially at what we of the Eastern States still denominate as the West. Indiana, Illinois, lowa and Mis souri are now Middle States, and there wc find the greatest activity in projecting and building new railroads to facilitate the concentration of the trade of the Great Valley. A few days ago we called attention to a new railroad, bisecting the fertile prairies of lowa, and we have now another equally important enterprise which is pushing southward from restless, and almost resistless Chicago, far down to Vincennes, Evansville and Nashville. The radii of railroads whose centre lies at Chicago, already lie as close together as the spokes of a Hying wheel, but thebe was one very rich and important region of; Country yet to be reached, and tliis is now being covered by the Chicago, Danville arid V incennes road, running due south; through the eastern tier of counties in JUinois to Danville, where it diverges slightly to the southeast, meeting the Evansville and Grawfordsville road at the State line, and so forming a connection with Evansville. Indiana, now the most important shipping point on the Ohio river. The Evansville, Henderson and Nashville road will be open by the time the new Illinois road is ceinpleted, and thus Chi cago will -be- brought into direct communi cation, by an almost straight line, with Nash •villc. The Chicago, Danville and Vincennes road is about 140 miles in length, 55 miles of whieli are already finished and in operation. The ■whole cost of the road, which has no engineer- ing difficulties to overcome,' will bn four-and-a haif million dollars, and the Company has de termined on the issue of-First-Mortgage Sink ing Fund Bonds to the amount of two-and-a half million dollars, having forty years to ran, payable, principal and interest, In gold, the whole issue and transfer of the bonds being confided to and controlled by the Union Safe Deposit Company in New York, an excellent, arrangement., 'by which any excessive or im proper mahipulatiomof the Company’s securi ties is made impossible. The railroads of America have all demon- M rated the fact that a road which .can com mand a good local tiafiie will, be a profitable one, and the experience of the numerous roads centering at-Chicago-is peculiarly in structive on this point. The Chicago, Dan ville and Vincennes cuts directly through a country which is not only teeming with already developed local trade, but is the rich est coal region in that part of the United .States. The character of this railroad enterprise, its low cost of construction, the certainty of its heavy local business, the permanent nature of its gold-paying bonds, and the special precau tions taken to prevent any over-issue of or tampering with its securities, all combine to make these bonds of tire Chicago, Danville and Vincinnes road a safe and profitable in vestment for capitalists. The arrangements made by the Company for disposing of their bonds ip Philadelphia will be found in our advertising columns. We would call special attention to ail inter- esting discussion of Dr. ScliSeppc’s ease, in another column of to-day’s paper. It is from the pen oi'an eminent physician of Philadel phia, who. has given the subject his cateful attention from tire commencement of the case, and whose professional opinion is en titled to tire highest consideration.
