Already, the advocates of Protection have
supinely or heedlessly conceded to their ad

campaign—they have assumed the offensive—
theirs is the momentum of the charge, while
the adverse host has not yet, heard the long
roll founded and fallen into line. Heuce, in

instincts are right.as to the Tariff issue. Co

tenths would unhesitatingly, respond, “We

tend rather to drain away the wealth already;

Abont Bird Motce.— »■
, Two cocks are . supposed to be crowing in,
adjacent
plaint: '“The .women' are mistresses’here.”
Whereupon! the; othery;cock crows back his
answer, “And so they are everywhere.” (The
last syllable was pronounced wepr, after the
rustic fashion.) The poet Campbell speaks of
“thfe stock-dove’s., coo;”.but lie docs not tell, us
, whatythe. 1 wood-pigeoni is suppdsiejii to say, ■• lit 1 ,
is the follow’ing tender little'address to the bird
of his clipice: “Coordokit.y cod! coorookity coo!
If you’in.ove mc, tlien l’ll love you; Coorookity;
1 coo!” Autdlycus sings" of “The kirk that tirra
lirra chants,” (Winter’s Tale,” IV; 2,) and this
tiri-a-lirra, with- the other, notes of the bird, is
well mutated in the following lines:
La ecntille nlouotto 4ivco eon tircliro
Tiroliro a lire et tiroliran, tire,
Tiers lit voCrte dircicl, puis son vol vors co lieu
Vire et dfcsiro dire ndiou Died, adieu Diou.
The little bird wh6>’Annoys people by its
Baal-like repetition of “Billed Billee!” is pro
bably the same Mi - , Tittlebat Titmouse who is
supposed by some to say “Peter! Peter!" and
by others .“Pinclier! iPincher!” tyhile, another
bird of,this fyibe!is presumed to.cry out fotvhis
“Teakettle! teakettle!” and country folks say
that just before rain, the missel-thriish or
“stprm-codk,” in a like manner screams out for
his “Tippet! tippet!” : to protect him from the
shower. That “bird of night ,” the owl,has been
variously treated by different observers, even as
ithejiiightihgaie is merry to some aridmelaricholy,,
toothers, for,while Gray says “the moping owl
does to tbe-moon. complain;’!. Shakspearo ip.ro
claijns its “Tu-whit! to-whool” a merry note.
White, in liis “Selborne,” says lie “heard two
hooting to each other,'-the One iniA flat, and
the: other B flat.” The >’ cottagers in hiy neigh
borhood, where we have many owls,translate
their language thus;
To'Woo!. to-woo!
Ob my cold too!
, And there is a rural ballad that contains this
same idea, and is supposed to be spoken by an
owl. It runs thus: ~j, '
“Oh! I was once a ureut king’s ilnuglitcr,
Anil I snt on a fuir iimteii’s kneo;
nntno>v I’m nothing lint a rover,
With my home in tuo ivied treol
Tlioro I cry 00-00 l to-whit; to-whool
06-00, oh!my foot they nrecoldl
i 00-oo! pity mo! 00-00 here'you’seo
The poor Owlet In'tho hollow treo old.”
The legend, alluded to by Ophelia, was that
a baker’s daughter was tinned into an owl for
refusing to give bread to iler Saviour. The
scops-cared,. or, little homed 'owl has, says
Spence, the Florentine name of Cliiu, from its
monotonous cry,,“Kew, kew.” Pliny says that
Claudius CfySatt;'Agrippina made a pet of a
talking tlinisiiftliat could imitate the discourse
of jnon; though some commentators imagine
this thrush was a starling; Mr. Brodenp, ill
his; charming' “Zoological Recreations,” says
that lie heard a thrush “express in the coume;
of its singing, sounds which fell on the car as
if it were repeating the words‘My dear!,my
pretty dear! my pretty little dear!’Tliese ac
cents M ere not caught up by one listener alone,
Mho might, perhaps, have been deemed a little
imaginative, but all who'heard them were
smirk bv the resemblance.”
One other specimen of human language as
cribed to the notes of birds, like my .. first,
■■is drawn from the farmyard. A lien is sup
posed to have laul-.au egg, and to be anxious
to prdclaini; the fact. ? She cries “cluck, cluck!
an !egg a day! an egg a day! an egg a day!
and' yet I.go ,barefoot,-’’ (though I - have also
. heard this version, “1 lay eight eggs! and
eight eggs! and eight' l , eggs! and eight eggs! and
yt-ljl go barefoot!”) Her reiterated anil loudly
proclaimed cpiyplain.ts rouse the anger of her

The D iary -of LlbitrylCraibb i Robinson(Lon--

Charles Lamb:
I Coleridge, lecturing on “Romeo and Juliet,-’

objections to such discipline. “It’s a pity,”'

Lamb again whisjiered, “This is not much

For Dropsy and Dropsical Swelling* they
should bo taken in large and frequent doses to pro
duce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression a large uose should he taken
as it produces tlio desired effect by sympathy.
As a J tinner Pill, take ono or two Pills to pro
mote digestion and relievo the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad
vantageous where no serious derangement exists;
One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose
of these Pills makes him feel decidedly better, from
■ their cleansing and renovating effect on tho diges
tive apparatus.
