FREAKS OF AN INSANE .MAN—A POLICE STA TION or( Frars.—A young man was arrested yes terday In St. Philip de Neri Church, on Queen street, above Second, while acting in a strange manner. He was taken-to the Second District Police Station, and was placed in a cell. Some time afterwards the policeman on duty discovered smoke curling np the stairway. Upon making an inveatigation,it was discovered that the smoke came from the cell in which the young man was confined. The cell was opened and the prisoner was found in a nude state, He had taken . off all of his clothing and set it on fire. When ques tioned, he stated that while in the church he found that there was "a screw loose in the charity box," and he was "geing for it." He further re marked that he had been arrested for nothing, anti he was determined to burn his way out of the station-house. It was evident that his mind was affected, and he was passed over to the custody of his relatives. ' MIIIIDBROUB ASSAULT.—Edward McMahon, re siding on . Ellsworth street, above Eleventh, is now lying in a critical condition from the effects of - wound in the neck received on Christmas Eve:' • While out with some friends . , he was met by a numberof young men, one of whom recog nized him arid shook hands with him Another of the party, then, it is alleged, struck him, in the neck with a sharp instrnment, and ran away, fol. lowed by his companions. Mc Mahon went• home, and the next morning he did not appear at the breakfast table. His mother went to his room and found the bed saturated with blood and her i i son in a very weak and exh listed condition. A physician was summoned a d the wound was at tended to. The assailant an the reason for the attack are both unknown. CHAnGED WITH HOUSE R9IIBERILIS.—George Williams was arrested on Saturday by Detectives Levy and Tryon, upon the charge of having robbed the dwellings of Mr. Horstmann, No. 1600 Walnut street, and Mr. Seth,. Stitt,No. 212 West Logan Square. He had been suspected, and was captured on the street while in company with his wife. Ho had a basket hanging on his arm. In this basket articles which had been stolen at each house were found. All the pro perty stolen from Mr. Horstmann was recovered, and, with the exception of a few pieces of silver, all of (Mr. Stitt's property has been found. Wil liams will have a hearing at the Central Station. A Snow eeroxist.—A snow storm prevailed yes terday from 9 o'clock A. M. until 5 o'clock P. M. The flakes were.light and dry, and did not come down very liyely. Only a sufficient quan tity fell to make the sidewalks slippery during last evening and early this morning. To-day the sun shines, the atmosphere is moderate, and nearly all evidence of yesterday's storm has di l appet)! ed. REICICLEBS CONDUCT.—Henry Money and John Holden were arrested yesterday afternoon, at Ninth and Chestnut streets, by Reserve Officer Kendig, upon the charge of reckless driving. They were in a carriage and drove into another vehicle, the wheel of which was broken in the collie'on. The prisoners wore held in $lOO ball by Ald. Settler. RECAPTUUED.—Theodore Sill and James Pain tor,who escaped from Moyamensing Prison some time since, were recaptured on finturday by the Thirteenth District Ponce. They were arrested in Montgomery county, about three miles above Blanayunk. They were taken back to prison. BnoKn His LEG.-Wm. Bransberry, aged about 66 years, a resident of West Philadelphia, fell on the Ice on Market street near Thirty-ninth, last evening, and had a leg fractured. He was taken to the hospital. Fuiu A.ars.-We observed at Messrs. Earle's,on Saturday, a large painting by Zanthus Smith, intended for the decoration of the new Chamber of Commerce, in Second street. It represents the idea of Commerce, tinder the figure of a huge merchantshlp, careering in mid-ocean with crowded sail. A pair of portraits flank it; William Penn, by Mr. James Lambdin, one of the beet efforts we bare lately aeon from tno brush of this excellent man and artist, so lone identified with the history of American painting. Thependant portrait to 011Ei of Pranklin,by Mr. S. B. Waugh. These three plc turer, framed with simple elegance by Meow.. Earle, will be the templet lug ornaments of a handsome build ing, and we are glad to see the painter's brush called in to supplement the skill of the architect. • SUBSCRIPTIONS taken for all Magazines and Periodicals: seat by mail or served lo any address, at publishers' prices.
