Coroner Fletcher held an inquest this morning'
In the case of William Fleming, whose death wat
caused by the 'accident which occurred yesterday
at Baldwin's Locomotive building, in course of
construction at Broad arid Buttonwood streeta.
Cornelius A. Worthington testified thit he
was on the rafters at the limo of the aceident,and
was about coming down when he saw the rafter
poing over. The rafters were all in their place,
were guyed ard perlines betweeathem. Re con
sidercd tht m all safe and could give no account
of the accident _ _
Jelin 8,. Anderson testified that he considered
the accident unavoidable, and could not tell the
cause of 14 the accident was unavoidable in his
judatnent.
Way. IdeClain sworn—When the last rafter was
put up he was standing by the derrick; the rope
be bad hold of was then., slacked, but it was still
on.the rafter; be could not give the cause of the
accident; the neaten guy rope was broken.
David Cramer testified that he had the
geeeratebarganf the job; was at the building
a few momenta before the accident, when every
thing-appeared to be;: working-right. He then
leftand went_to attend.to somehusiness._ What
caused the breaking of the guy he could not tell;
he could tell the cause of the falling. If there had'
been no strain or pret•stire from some cause the.
accident would not have occurred.
Thejery rendered the following verdict: That
the said William Fleming came to his death from
Injuries received by the accidental falling of
.;afters at Bald win's Locomotive Works, Broad
Arid Buttonwood streets, Dec. 10th, 1868.
EnsOTION OF OFF.lOEas.—At the annual meeting
of the Philadelphia Skating Club and Sammie
Society, held on Wednesday evening, the 9th,
Inst., the following officers were elected unatd
mensly:
President, Franklin Peale; Vice-President,
Thomas W. Marchment; Secretary, Edward D.
Yates; Treasurer, Samuel gimes; Corresponding
ISecretary, W. L. Germon; Solicitor, David W.
Sellers. A Board of Surgeons and an executive
committee consisting of nine members each, were
also chosen. . ,
OVEROOAT Tinsvas.—Willitim Gray, who was
arrested yesterday on the charge of stealing two
overcoats, at the Club house, Thirteenth and
Walnut streets, was committed by Ald. Patchel.
James Gibson, aged about 28 years, was arrested
last evening at Third and Cyprus& streets; at - his
boardlrg home, on the ehatge of being au ac
complice with Gray. Be was held for ti further
hearing by'the same Alderman.
Horn Tumvss.—A lot, of ropo was stolen yes
terday from au Italian brig lying at Walnut
street wharf, Schuylkill. Soon after John Arons,
James Whartenby, David MCDonald and Henry
Thomaiwere arrested on_the charge of commuing
the theft. The ntolen property was found at a
pawn-shop at Swanson and Almond streets. They
were held to answer.
MAunteort IN A STATION.. -James O'Daniels
and klargaret McLouchlan were arrested yester
day and taken before an alderman, who com
mitted them to the Fifteenth District Station, on
the charge of fornication. After remaining there
during the day they settled their difficulties by
being united in marriage, after which they were
allowed to depart.
ASSAULT UPON A LITTLE GIRL—John Shehan
was arrested last evening on the charge of com
mitting an outrageous assault on a girl aged four
years. The outrage was perpetrated at Tenth
and Berke streets, Twenty-eighth Ward. The
screams of the child attracted the attention of the
neighbors t when Shehan was locked up. Aid.
Kemble admitted the accused to bail in $1,200.
Srniturro MATT/NO.-J. A.Pillen'a house, 'on
Indian Queen lane, Manayunk, was entered yes
terday by two colored men, who stole a lot of
matting end then made their escape with the
booty. The entrance was effected through the
cellar.
LARCENY or CLOTHING —Eliza Miller was
arrested last evening, at Eleventh and Lombard
streets, on the charge of the larceny of a lot of
bed clothes. She was taken before. Alderman
Pa Übe], when, on bring examined, a lot of
spoons were also found. She was committed.
Smotrr Fins;.—The alarm of fire last evening
about ten o'clock was caused by the burning of
some bed clothes, occasioned by children who
were going to bed at the residence 2110 Callow
hill street.
CODWIRMATIOIC.—The now Bishop of Oregon,
the Rt. Rev. B. W. Morris, will hold a confirma
tion in the Church of the Redemption, Twenty
second And Callowhill streets, this evening at 7X,
o'clock.
THE SKATING SEASON.—The Schuylkill WO,B
dosed this morning below the dam,and a number
of young men and boys were skating on the Alms
house mcplows.

in aid of the building fund of. St. Matthew's P. E.
Sunday School, is well worthy a visit. The Art
Gallery contains several of Winner's, Bonfield's,
and Birch's best paintings, such as Christ Ratting
Jaitus's daughter, Healing the Blind Beggar, etc.
The sale clones at 10.30 to-night. Lot all visit
it and help the enterprise.
