We suppose that every one who rea4s three lines is aware of the fact that lflassa chusette, especially Boston, exercises an in fluence both socially and politidally to which neither the number of their inhabitants, -their wealth, nor their position entitles them. It requires but little study to arrive at the cause. There exists in all: the communities of New . Rngland, a deep-seated spontaneous and practical respect for educated ability, that with us seems wanting. They exhibit it in every way. They send men of educated intellect to represent them at Washington, and Al is notorious that New England influence at. Washington always heen most effi cient, The social respect paid to learning in Boston has always had a powerful , ' influence n attracting educated men to make that city a place of residence, and the inhabitants have not been slow in adding, aubstantial advan tages as further inducements. Such things gain by accretion; the nucleus once obtained, every additional increase becomes easier. Mew York, though much behind B jaton, Raw all this in advance of usi and for years past has been constantly at work to make up for past deficiencies. We have lost ground, and it is only by admitting the fact twat we can hope to repair our error. Oar own indifference and lukewarmness has continually lost ns opportuoities of this sort that are not easily retrieved. When in this city a man displays striking ability as a teacher (using the word in its highest reuse) he is certain to receive tempting offers from Boston and New York. Many we lose in this way, and if we do not lose more, it is be— cause family and social ties have been formed which interfere. It does not enter into the slope of these remarks to cite individual cases, or we might easily do so, and we could probably surprise our readers by showing bow many men of talent have been attracted away from our city within the last ten years; especially men competent to teach and to manage eduea- &nal institutions upon a large scale; men +competent not merely to teach but to make teachers. The—result_ is _visible in the fact that a very considerable number of our young riken are sentto New England for education, not merely to the well-known colleges, but to awes of good schools iu the interior towns of the Eastern States. IL does no good to shut our eyes to these Sets.' If ignoring them would cure them, the case would bo different. Our public schools are very good, are all very well in their way, but we do not address these remarks to those who believe that a common-school education is all that is needed. Fur some avocstious in Site it may be all aulticientibut if a ooranarmity is to be influential, it must give ample oppor tunities of higher education to all who desire it. Not only this, a due portion of respect should be paid to cultivated intelligence and to talent. If any think that these remarks savor of par tiality, we can disabuse them is a moment. Ask a Massachusetts man what his State has dune for literature, and he will point to L-mg klkwr, Lowell, Emerson, Prescott, Haw thorne, and a host of others. Ask a Penn sylvanian the same question, and what can he answer? In fact, it is probable that unless he is an exoeption, he will not even know what names he might cite, though of course he could not approach to these. Whether Philadelphia will ever be awakened from the lethargic indifference now manifested as to higher cultivation, we do not know; but we do know that year by year aim Is losing many of those upon whom she intuit depend for better things. Atid the first step is the inculcation of respect and honor br cultivated ability. TIME EXPRESEI COMPArdIEN. There is something as extraordinary as it is essentially wrong in the position which the .."•,,, express companies have been allowed to 'obtain in this country. They have forced ,te, , thenkselves between the Railroad 04otp tides !'imid the public, and whilst they fleece the letter by their exorbitant charges, they deprive the transportation companies and their atockholdera of a large profit to which ~. these are.legitimately entitled. k ` 7 l"__ con the one hand, the railroad companies are ~...4 . called upon to transport at low rates a vast i " - o freight, tity of for which the express ..;‘,..., CI '.: eompanlea receive from five to one hundred • fold the price received by the transpxtati.m company,A pareel_weigbing a.few °miens, ,end sent from Philadelphia to AlbMy, N-:w ,114Ralt, rieVideltOCY /30134 M, or any PlOgloj lk A'::. distarsce, - pays the excessive — express - (diap er thirty cents, out of *blab the Jaitro3d computes rzotilre a fox mine only. 4 book, for example, unless -:arge and betvy, ptys actually lees wb.en sent to any each pleoe by post explesx,; and •rrhen the distance is greater the difference becomes very lartie. The eums, arnaesed by Om comßseisi their oVercbargeti are Something colossal and sufficiently demonstrate the excessive profits, wade by them. The "Merchants' Exprese has lately been consolidated with "Welk% Fargo C 0.," representing together a capital of eighteen millions of dollars, and the. Adams ExPiess Compani:s nnderstood to be worth at least as much., The whole affair represents a tax won the community whicb, bad as it is, would be borne with more patience if the service wai t xpeditiously and punctually performed. But it is not. liarcels sent from New York to PLiladelphia may be two or three days on the way, and then there is a vast , deal of cheating done by charges at both ends. One may often send articles to his friends freight paid, and find that a charge has been made ut the other'end. A strong conviction %beginning to pervade the community that the time is coming when the Government will have to interfere iu these matters ; or, if no.better means can be. found, extend postal facilities upon so large a scale as to -take this business out of its present Lands. When the State banks made them selves a national- nuisance, they were legis lated out of existence, and the same may yet be done with the Express companies. The sooner the batter. PATEN s FEEL. Every traveler through the coal regions of Pennsylvania has observed around the mines great hills of waste coal dust, the Sittings from the coal when it ie prepared for market There are 'Baby millions of tons of this stuff. heretofore considered useless. A process has however, been devised,by which all this may be converted into an excellent and economi cal fuel. The dust is mixed with a mucila Orions preparation, oast into cylinders of different sizes, and dried in ovens. Works have teen put in operation near Tamaqua, and are to be greatly extended, so that large quantities of the "Patent Fuel" will soon be in the market. Mr. T. M. Mitcaeil, 131 South Third street, whose advertisement ap pears in another column, is the agent for its sale. The "Patent Fuel" has been tried by the writer of this artiele with the most satisfactory results. It kindles easily, burns freely and leaves no residuum but a very fine atilt which runs freely through the grate bars. It makes a beau tiful fire and an intense heat, and a grate well filled in the morning will last till late et night, without being touched by a poker. It is equally good in furnaces, ranges and stoves, and - is especially good under steam boilers. The discovery of this process of making the waste coal dust useful is a great thing for Pennsylvania, and a great thine also for consumers, as the Patent Fuel can be furnished at a price considerably below that charged for coaL %HU It is becoming a question with a much enduring public how lok; the pr.sent miser able system of car conveyance will be per mitted. Where exclusive 4hts are given; the recipients are bound to furnish accommo dation commensurate with the travel, and of this there is searcely, any longer a pretence on many. of the lines. It is notorious, for example, tbat,in the early hours c,f the morn ing, the Chestnut and Market Streets lines fill up on the other side of the river, and that these routes have long since ceased, at those hours, to be of any use to persons resident east of the Schuylkill.' As an example, we may mention that an invalid, ensile to walk,_ tried live cars in succession lately, on the Chestnut Street line, before being able to get a place. And this is a common case on many routes. The city ought to control all these lines, and let out the right to run cars on them as formerly omnibusses. The companies have proved themselves every way unfit to control them. The Electoral Colleges met yesterday i❑ the capitals of the several States, and voted for President and Vice President. It Is pro liable that in each college voting fir Grant and Colfax there were attempts made to lain unanimous recommendations to the President of candidates for certain offices In Tennessee, indeed,a resolution was public!) adopted recommending Hon. Horace Miy nard for a place in the cabinet. This is alt wrong, and the President elect ought to treat such proceedings as he has treated all other applications for office. The Electors had one' single duty to perform, and it is an im- pertinence in them to undertake to arrange the cabinet and other appointments. The case of "Ex-President Davis," as the Richmond papers fondly and foolishly style him,is to be argued to-day before Chief Justice Chase, in Richmond, on a motion made by Robert Ould to quash the indictment for tree eon. For ell that is ever likely to be done to punish Davis for his crimes, the indietmmt might as well be quashed. Under Andrew Johnson's administration there has been so little done to make "treason odious," that people have ceased to expect any punishment for Davis except that which Arnold and Barr have received—the scorn of all loyal men and good American citizens. 4, Inquiries are addressed to us as to whether either of the City Ice Boats is ready for ser vice. December is advancing and a sudden cold spell may fill the Delaware with ice and cause as much hindrance to commerce as was suffered last winter. Will the Trnsteea of the City Ice Boats vouchsafe to tho ship ping community some information on the au ty.ci? The proposition of the New York, Herald that the Democratic electors should vote for Grant and Colfax seems to have been unani mously ejected; for they all voted yesterday for Seymour and Blair. It if evident that the political millennium has not yet arrived, for the lion and the lamb will not lie down together. Full Account of the Services. Bt. Luke's Church, Thirteenth street, was the setae of an imposing ceremonial, this mornine, the occasion being the consecration of the Rev. Ben jamin Whiter Morris, Rector of 81. Luke's Church, Germantown, as Missionary Bishop of Oreec,n. The church was crowded with a large congre gation, assembled to witness this interesting ser vice. At 11 o'clock the procession of clergy entered the church, passing up the aisle, in the following order : Bishops Alfred Leo, Odenbeimer, Vail, Kerfoot, Randall and Clarkson. The Bishop-elect, attended by Rev. (Jr, flare and Rev. Mr. Breck. The 0111clating Clergymen in Surplices. Other Clergymen. There were between eighty and ninety bishops and clergymen in the procession, about fifty being robed. As the clergy took the places assigned to them In and about the chancel, the choir, under Mr. W. 11. W. Darley, sang an appropriate anthem, "Beek-yo the Lord," by Baumbach, in good style. The opening Sentences, Exhortation, Confes sion and Absolution were read by the Rev. Mr. Ik:duty. The Lord's Pr ayer and following versicles were read by the Rev. Dr. Yarnell, and the Psalter by the Rev. Dr. Buddards. Zhe First Lesson, Isaiah, 61st chapter, was read by the Rev. Dr. Littlejohn, of Brooklyn, and the Second Lesson, Acts, 20th chapter, by the Rev. Dr. Haight, of New York. The Creed was ready by the Rev. Mr. Buchanan, and the Prayers by the Rev. Dr. Morton. The Psalm and Hymn were announced by the Rev. Dr. Howe. The Ante-Communion Service was conducted by the eeveol Bishops present, after which an eloquent serMon was preached by the Right Rev. Bishop Clarkson, of Nebraska. His text was taken from l3t. Luke xis, 13 and Joshua xxiii, 24, "Occupy until I come * * from the great sea, westward." It was an earnest appeal for an Increase of the force of missionary Bishops at the Weal, strongly advoca ting the tiecessltyand policy of crea ting seven more Missionary Dioceses, in order that, each of the territories might be under sepa rate episcopal Jurisdiction. bishop Clarkson dwelt with great force upon the growing needs of the West, and extended a cordial greeting to the new Bishop, who was about to enter upon the great field lying upon the "Pacific coast. We regret that the lateness of the hour forbids our giving a full abstract of this earnest and moat sensible discourse. At the conclusion of the Sermon, the Bishop elect, vested in his rochet, was presented to Bishop Lee, the Presiding Bishop, by Bishops Herfoot and Clarkson, saying: ilteverend Father in God, we present unto you Ws godly and well-learned man to be ordained and consecrated Bishop." The testimonials from the House of Wilhope were then read by the Rev. Dr. Potter, o Grace Church, N. Y., and those of the House of Cleri cal and Lay Deputies by the Rev. Dr. Hodges. The .Consecration Service then . proceeded, as prescribed in- the Office of Consecration, the Bleb p-elect resyohdlog to theexamination by the Pr. siding Bishop, in a distinct and audibbi tone, after which he assumed the full Episcopal ti t bit, and kneeling, the Vent: Creator Spiritua was sail. Alt the Bishops present united fa the imposition of bands. The at rvice 'of consecrating was concluded by the Presiding Bishop tinliverlng the Bible to the newly consecrated Bishop, with the quaint old exhortation of the Kpiscopal Cburch: "Give hied unto reading, exhortation and doe trine. think upon the thinge contained in Boot:the diligent in them, that the increase coming tkr n by may be manifest .unto all men; for by so doing thou shalt bOlll save thy Self and them that beer thee. Dickinson acted as judger. A dirpnte about one of the heats arose between them. Dickinson declared 1114 the de cision had been given - without consulting General Forrest flew into a rage, and fleshy slep pt d r the Squire's_ face. The Squire (who is a white-hair. d old man) drew a pistol, but was pre vented by lay PillViderB from discharging it. Deputy Sheriff Wright seized the arms of the former and, prevented his' shooting, but Bill Forrest, retreating a few steps from the crowd which besieged the Squire, dis charged one shot. ire the direction of Ser. geant Brown, of the First District, and patrolman George Schocke. Whien of the parties the but was lotended for Is not known, but the ball passed through the Sergeant's coat on ,the left side, and iotothe abdo— men of the patrolman. Fortunately the ball struck the button fastening Mr. Sehocke's over coat, causing it to glance and range alone the side ol the abdomen, without penetrating the in testines. Sergeant Smith. of the Sanitary Police, about this time,as we are informed, succeeded in securing the Squire's pistol, and stepping up to General Forrest and exposing the weapon in his _pocket, remarked, " I've got the pistol." Where upon the General grabbed it and quietly pocketed it,. with the remark that he would see that no harm was done. The wounded man was immediately taken to his home. No. 84 Charleston avenue, whore his wound was dressed. Sergeant Brown (whose conduct is said to have been praiseworthy in the affair) and patrolman Mike Des, arrested Wm. Boon after the arrest of William Forrest, the angry crowd quieted down, but no further ar rests were made. though scores of parties were ,, known to have deadly weapons in their posses sion. Order being restored, General 'Forrest mounted the stand, and after a brief explanation resiamd his position as judge, but upon being Inri ortumd by his friends he consented to ref main. sad the fourth heat was made. the Cockrell horses winning in 3,0734.
