—"Years ago," says a musical critic in a recent
publication, a young . man began to write music
in Parts,—mUsic of a type nobody was acquainted
with, and very few liked. Indeed, the only per
son who professed any liking at all for the work
of the new man was a lady. She 'was a good
musician, though, and her name was Pauline
Viardot-Garcia. The young man was called
Charles Gounod. The composer of Faust? Yes,
fair reader: but he wrote ever sc many operas
before that one. Ever so many. And they were
all failures,—all. pari nt," remarked
the N oung man'. friends. Still Viardot encour
aged him, and still got him a theatre to produce
his work. At last came •Faust." A tremendous
success ? No. it was not a success. On . the con-
trary, Faust, iu its first season, was a dismal fail
ure. The manager of the theatre, howuver, be
lieved in the work, and reopened his house with
it. This time it went, and everybody found out,
all by themselves, that the molehill had produced
a 13 rical elephant.
—The Springfield (Ohio) Republicrtit says: A
gentleman in this city has a friend at Northville,
Wayne county. Slich.,who writes the monstrous
news that a newl3-born child there has two snake
heads growing from the top of the trunk of the
body. One Is that of an anaconda and the other
that of a black snake. They have to be kept
separate, for on sight of each other they com
mence fighting. To teed them it is necessary to
lay the child on its back, and let them lick milk
from a plate. The parents-3have boon offered
000 for this child-reptile, but refuse to accept
the offer. We would suggest that anybody who
believes the yarn would be is great a 'Curiosity
as the baby itself; but we give it for what it is
worth.
—Mrs. Audubon, widow of the na taralist, writes
that she knows nothing of the appeal made for
assistance in her behalf: that she is boarding com
fortably in New York city, and that her thirteen
grand children are independent of her support.
