The. association, in the excess of its gratitude for the proverbial hospitality of Chicago, seemingly knew no other way of making a return than by the admission of these prominent nitizeus to membership, to the most 'of Whom Vie tech= nicalitles of science are a mystery or a bore, and' whose sudden initiation into the 'asadcia tion is regarded as a. capital. joke both , themselves and their friends A Writer for the Chicago Tribune Makes sport of the •wheile business in an • exceedingly humorous style. We quote what it'susys, with .the re mark that the names mentioned are those of the best known grain speculators, lawyers, editors, politicians and business men of Chi cago. The writer says : ,"If I commence this letter abruptly with the American Association for, the Advance= went of Selene°, attribute it to my utter ..as tonishment at the immense number of meaner' we have had in embryo in this citY, and which have coma out full fleidgedanaoo, - , the sessions of the association. Professor Jerome Beecher read a paper on the relations between gas and dividends, showing that the pre-historic man never received any profits from its illumina ting properties, and that Solomon was quite irregular in paying the gas bills of the Tem ple. Professor James IL Bowen read an essay on wool, showing by the conformation of Lnc]e Ned's head that the old legend re specting the condition of his car . vut could-not I have been true. Dr. - Clinton Briggs gave the algebraic formula, starting on the bins of x, which keeps Merchants' Union stock at 24. This view wart also corroborated by an able paper read by Professor C. B. Farwell. Pnit C. M. Cady delivered an oral argument prov ing that a Steck piano had been dug up un derneath the skeleton Of a mastodon in an alluvial formation, and that the skeleton of an aborigine was seated at it. From the po sition of the petrified fingers on the keys, he had discovered a chord in the touching song `Let me kiss him for his mother,'thus proving the immense-age of-Ilds ballad - "Professor Crosby read a valtiable paper on the 'White Fawn, a splendid individual of this genius having been lona inthe lower Silurian of the ancient bed of Lake Erie. This paper was illustrated with a diagram showing that this peculiar Fawn must have revolved on its axis with regular motion. Near this petrifaction he had found seme hieroglyphics —`o. C. 1:00; D. C. 'do.'—which he interpre ted to mean: `Orchestra Chairs, St ou; Dress Circle, same.' Dr. Sohn 13: Drake, F. It S., read a highly interesting paper on the legend: 'He's a good fellow, hut can't keep a hotel.' . The association in discussing this, paper, how ever, differed so . widely that they at length resolved'unanimously to live at the Tremont three months.atthe.doctor's expense; to find, out why the god . fello w` ceilidh% keep a' be tel. Dr. George H. -Dewlap, N. W. alt. R., read an essay on the - coming railroad from Chicago to the moon. - He - stated that Pro lessor Perry H. Smith would probably locate himself at the moon terminus, to see that its perturbations did not affect the stock, and he had no doubt, moreover, that as soon as they settled the uncertainty relative to the moon's semi-diameter the stock would be at a pre mium. Telegraph stations would be under the control of the man in the moon—not Pro fesser Smith, but the other man—and the stockholdera would •be given a. fred !annual ride to the octants blithe orbit, corner lots in which were now for sale. "Professor Edward -Ely then occupied the attention of the association with a paper upon coats and neck-ties,illustrated with diagrams, in which he proved conclusively tlie!tethe au tomicity of the torso of a coat (that rs, a coat without a tail or sleeves), was 'equivalent to one atom of art 'element in a,coat ,ivith,a tail, united to one or more atoms of a second-hand coa ; and that the moral influence of the fluc tuations of a neck-tie upon a well-regulated mind could hardly be computed. In the case of a sinner, these fluctuations proueced a maximum of profanity which was one of the most sublime exhibitions' in all nature. In the case of a saint, however, while the tem,, perature of the individual was raised, it was not manifest on the surface. Dr. N. K Fair banks readarcabstradt of, the Cereal Eviden ces of 'Wheat Corners in the "United States. Professor Hesing read an, essay on Gentath liehkeit, and was; confident that the cheer ful disposition characteristic of the mound builders was due to Rhine wine, empty bot tles of which had been found in the mounds, rineipaity-the-wariety--Heehheimer and Laube.henner. From 'wangle:fit punch bowl found 'in cerniferous liniestone on La Salle street he thought the mound-linilderii under stood the secret of brewing a Cardinal.
