Dr John Peters contributed to the Sep tember number of the Galaxy aninstructive accotmt.of the oriental sources of cholera, in which be, traces the yearly origin of the plague to the great accumulations of pilgrims, at the Indian shrines - his paper embodies graphic descriptions of the crowded festivals of the Golden CR , Conjeireram, with 'its 126 tem- - • pies; a the annual feasts oiTuggerriaut, whence 10,000 out of 200,000 pilgrims never return to their homes; of the sacred places [beaded along the Ganges; and of other cholera nests and "pilgrim nuisances ) ! throughout In dia which combine every cause of nervous prostration and foul infection. Here, for , in station, inthe horrible picture of •the pilgrim age to the Juggernaut. • "The cite:late is severe; for the country arOund'juggemaut consists of 107 sand, hills, with but few trees; and shout a-, mile from the, shore all vegetation and shade -abruptly cease, leaving only a deep' loose sand waste along the .desolate coast. Drenching rains, damp gales and sudden tempests add to the horrors of the bare sands and eurging ocean, and each day the multi of the festival become more and more ghastly, as the wan victims of famine, exhaustion and disease' drop more rapidly, making'a Golgotha around the un hallowed precincts. Next, malignant cholera appears; universal panic ensues; the great crowd disperses quickly t . arid each band of gilgrims turns homeward, carrying the disease with it. Almost every town, • Nillage, or bazaar, visited by them, receives some of the infection, which may increase so fearfully that the inhabitants, in their turn, desert their filthy habitations and fly to the jungles, leaving many dead and dy ing behind them. At such Alines it is not uncommon to find, whole towns deserted, and •the dead lying unburied in the houses, streets, and ditches. Those who reach the jungles have little but fruits, berries, roots, and leaves to feed upon. They have no shelter from the inclemency of the weather; and l are frequently 'obliged to drink stagnant and corrupted water, ao that even in the yery depths of the jungles 'the dead are often found so numerous *as to Infect the air for a great distance." The return from the shrine of Ramisseram, (whither 130,000 devotees betake themselves every year), is simply the dissemination of cholera throughout Southern India: "No longer borne up by excitement, ill fed, wearied and .poor (in addition to their ex penses, they have also given large fees to the priests), they listlessly occupy the same in fected vehicles which brought them, and ra - turn to the filthy camping grounds previously defiled by. themselves. Forced marches knock up both man and beast; and, foot-sore and down-hearted, they fall an unresisting prey to sickness, for the, public roads and thoroughfares are saturated with the foul ele ments of epidemic disease: From these great festivals cholera almost always accompanies the homeward-bound pilgrims. The villages visited on their route become infected by them, and their gradual dispersion to their - homes is the immediate means of distributing the disease." A general belief has prevailed that cholera is blown over the range of the Himal ayas into Central Asia, and • thence by the same agency into Russia and the rest of Eu rope. It is well proven, on the contrary, that the nest steals through the passes of the north , west with the caravans, and strictly follows the dispersing trains of the travelers. From Attock. to Cabul, thence to the towns of Perii a and Independent Tartary, and thence through Russia to Eurcpe, the course has been traced for many years past. The second paper of importance is a study - :of spiritual hysteria, entitled "Great Awaken ings." The conditions under which catalepsy attacks an audience under the influence•cof a strongly magnetic orator, are patiently exam ined from the experiences of Wesley down to those of Elder Knapp. This delicate subject is treated by the anonymous author with great impartiality, and rather with the desire of collecting evidence than of arriving at a conclusion; he is clearly convinced, however, that the state of trance, or the spiritual ecstasy of Swedenborg, is not a healthy psychological condition : "Hundreds and thousands have fallen down in a cataleptic state, insensible to all external influences, and have had startling visions; :if': t: :4••• I.: t•• • •• • - have not. Daughaday, publisher; 424 Walnut street. Godey reaches tis for Septernber, the old, the eternally young, the immemorial. It i brimming with good advice for the house hold,. as well as with cheerful and harmless tales, fair poetry, and the intricate ethics of embroidery. That Penelope, in the old Tro jan times, kept her web going without some assistance from_ .Godcy, (who, we are per suaded, existed then,) we consider incredi ble. That our wives and daughters should be able to dress themselves without deep corn munings with Godcy's fashion-plate, is no toriously impossible. The said plate, we may add, this month represents.five elaborate ladies and a ,deCorative. baby, and is (the plate, not the ladies) colored. A braiding pattern is also printed in tints; and the profusion of patterns and ornamental designs is, to the male inspection, simply stupefying. The musical news of the Northwest is wel edited in the Chicago Song Messenger, is suing from an apartment in the. Crosby Opera House. It constantly publishes good song , i and hymns, with legible words and notation. and IA besides a repository of the gossip of American and foreign music.
