AnOTXIF.RCHICACO TRAGEDY. A tnan SMI atid Nei-loasly WonsHled, i From tbo Cli!c«£o Republican, .Tune 5.] cvtDiDg about half-past. 8 o’clock, as Mr. , Nick Driea Was Sitting In Ms office with two or his Danners, he was approached by a man named Edward A. Cooper, who said “Hallo, ■ Nitk.” Mr. Dries turned toward the person who - wusaddressiDghiiii, when that individual imme diately dfow a revolver and shot -Mr v Dries, "tlio .-■•rball entering in the left side,; jnst. ever tho hip hone, ana passlng.throngh the body, came out in ■close proximity to the man’s private parts.. Tho ■ wounded man, exclaiming, “My G—d, I’m ' >shot! ’’ fill to the floor,, ana from tabre crawled on to a bed that was in the room. In the mean-; while his two partners had rushed toward the man Cooper, who still held the revolver in his hand, and with-their, batons they knocked him insensible to tho floor.'' Even then they were not -satisfied, but continued to strike, hita about tho, head and face until his head presenteil a most horrible appearance. - Bo was then arrested and taken to the police station, where his wounds were attended to. Tho doctor says that ho Is dangcrohsly injured, and that In all probability: ho will never recover. Mr. Dries, tho Individual who was shot, was at tended by Drs. Constant and Storck, who promptly dressed the wound, and made- the un fortunate man as ■comfortable as possible. Tbcv express themselves as hopeful that he will sjtf vlve the wound, but they cannot say positively that he will recover. They claim that if the blaa •dcr was disturbed at the time, that he Is in great danger. Tho man Cooper is employed as a porter in . a house on Sonth Water street, and Is a brother-: in-law of the man he attempted to murder. He was all day Tuesday last looking for Mr- Dries, and Informed several people that ne intended to •“fix him,”. He claims that Dries has made tronble between himself and wife, from whom he has been separated for some time post, ' and .among other things, claiming that he' wished 3iis wif c to buy sprue lots in the North Division, but that Dries Tnierfered and -prevented her from doing so. He also claims that he did bat follow: tho teachings of the Bible in shooting the ■man, for he says: . “Does not that good book tell -us to kill him' who Would' moke tronble, or breed ■dissensions in a man’s family?” ; . ■ Captain Fox intended having the wounded prisoner removed to tho City Hospital last night, if he did not feel better after the surgeon had flu ashed tho dressing of his wounds. Qn this point the New York Post (says: “‘Woman’ Is the fuller, freer, nobler title. The class distinction supposed to be indicated by the term ‘lady’ has, in this country, no other signification than one of conrtcsy, and is wholly dependent upon the personal conduct and character of the individual. A ■domestic may, in this sense, be a lady, Just os her mis tress may, in the sumo sense, be no 1 ady.” Although, with the male sox, this is a little different.
