THUS. H. HUGER, s t Brevet Brigadier-General U. S. Army. Provisional Governor. By the Governor: G. WHEATON. eaptaistli. S. A., Secretary of State. The Ululenge Billiard Batch. We cup from the Chicago Republican the fol lowing account of the latter part of the great bil liard match for the championship. It contains the detailsof the inning over which the dispute SION: . In the 54th inning luck seemed to come back to McDev itt, for in the easiest manner imaginable he made a ruu of 293 points. Tots lessened the gap considerably, the call being as follows: Foster, 1,034: McDevitt. 845. This announcement made his friends feel a great deal better, although the betting did not fin proire to any considerable extent. Foster followed with a run of, 4, and McDevitt ditto with 7; then one a piece in :safety play, when Fos ter again had a good break., and, with the three balls before him started in for a run. It was just twelve minutes to 12 o'clock,' when he commenced, and at feu , minutes past be had added-17u points to hie score, only stopping then on a foul ,'hot, which was claimed and allowed. Almost four hundred ahead this made the New Yorker, but Chicago was not yet defcated, for in his 57th inning McDevitt showed those brilliant nursing qualities for which he is so remarkable, and made the beet executed run of the game off the two red bells.- Ile did not atop on it until he had made 242 wents either, thus making the rail stand 1,209 to 1,0e5 in 'aver of Foster, who was ouly 114 points ahead now. This he mu eased, however, with a run of 49, followed with a blank by his opponent In bia lath inning McDevitt again showed rare dexte• rity, and w ith commendable coolness put up nele then' no count" was claimed by Foster, but not allowed. Instantly there was a scene of the wildest confueion, as all the friends of Feeler claimed that it didn't count," While ou the other hand the friends of McDevitt claimed in voices equally loud tbat "It did count." Foster pet on hie over coat end refuted to fmish the game under any elreum stancee. • McDevitt very tranquilly leaned against the corner and waited for the final dectsion of - the referee. Soya., alpeetninent -billiard player, spoke to Mr. Foster. and requested him to coeeeid to play the game out, but be refused utterly and positively to play any longer McDevitt said to the referee that he would he obliged to claim the match if his opponent did not agree to go ahead with the game. Again teeter was approached by the re feree and others, and asked to ' act in unison with decision given, and again he refused. Accordingly, Mr. LeEtruu -21ourited to the top of the table, end in a loud vole() an nounced that as e .1r Foster bad refused to play any more, ho would decide that the sixteenth game at billiards for .the championship of America MIA won by John McDevitt. This announcement was hailed by almost equal amount offctierre of approval and hisses and groans of dissent:/ Now, tor our statement concerning the affair. At the time the shot was made we were not looking at the table, but we were enured by several gentlemen that McDevitt certainly counted on the shot. -! The fact le, thou, on the right hand side of the table were of the opinion that the shot did not count, while those on the left band aide of the table are equally positive that ft did count. The balls were all in a heap, and it was more than Likely that McDevitt would run the game out; at least he would have gained a tremendous lead, for e when the game was stopped the score stood as follows: Foster. 1,262; McDevitt, 1,258, and • "still &making them." .We regret exceedingly such an abrupt termination to the game, and especially such die. graceful conduct on the part of those who tried to create a disturbance. but which was happily prevented by the presence of a powerful police force under Capt. Kennedy. The decision of Mr. AL Leßrun, as to the winner of the game, was. -under the circumstances, a correct one, and he deserves credit for being courageous enough tom site a decision. TICKNOR AND FIELDS take pleasure in placing before the American people this superb Engraving, which must be regarded as the only authentic and satisfactory portrait yet produced of General Grant. It is from the same band that executed those portraits of WASHINGTON and LiNcomr which have taken rank among the mas terpieces of lineal art ; and it is confidently be lieved that this likeness is destined to become the historic portrait of GENERAL GRANT. The engraving has been made from Mr. Mar shall's own painting, and gives, with striking fidelity, all the fine points of that great work. In the execution of this portrait the artist bad unu sual facilities for becoming acquainted with his Illustrious subject, and obtained numerous sit tings. His object was not to produce simply a likeness of General Grant; but to represent the features of his countenance accurately, with their beat and most characteristic expression. As a portrait of General Grant, it differs widely from all others; but the publishers believe that it is at once the best and the truest portrait of him; and, as corroborating this opinion, they invite atten tion to the following testimonials from persons well qualified by acquaintance, taste and culture, to pronounce upon the merits of this engraving as a portrait, and as a work of art: (Prow. Jlrs. Grwit.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 2S, 1668. MR W. E. Menettam.: DEAR lice: I tun delighted with your splendid ensraving of wy . husband. I cannot say too much in its praise. Ac a likeness I do not think it could be better. and I shall always prize your elegant gift. Yours truly, JULIA D. GRANT. (From Senator Sumatra) It is a rare and finished work, excellent as a likeness, and altogether worthy of a place in any collection or on the walla of any houee. Faithfully yours, CHARLES SUMNER. Messrs. TIC NOR Ea FIELDS. (From Mr. Bryant.) It is really a noble specimen of the art of engraving. It is admirable as a likeness, and appears to me to give the character of the original more perfectly than any en graving which I have seen. • W. C. BRYANT. (From Mr. Curtis.) The same force and fidelity, the same exquisite skill and delicacy, which you have made us all admire in your Washington and Lincoln, Are renewed in this masterly work. It shows all that simplicity, tenacity, sagacity, modesty, and moderation, which explain. Grant's career, end commend him so closely to the regard and respect of hie countrymen. GLORGE WILLIAM CURTIS. • (From JIM.). (;en. Howard.) I do not know that I was evermore highly pleased with a work'nf the kind. The likeness is striking and the pia tura lifelike. 0. 0.
