At St. Mary street ho canto np with the man, when/ he found to be bleeding, and WllO was then taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital. The wounded man gave his name as Charles Edwards. and said Unit while crossing Sweeney 's lot, at Eighth and Fitzwater streets, three men rushed upon him, struck him on the head with a black-jack, and him robbed of his watch . . He was then stabbed in the breast just below the nipple, the knife penetrating • the lung The in jured man was subsequently recognized as Theo dore McGurk, who is well known to the police. During the war be was charged with being a bounty-jumper. Ile has but recently been re leased from the New Jersey State Penitentiary, at Trenton, where be has been Serving out a term for burglary committed in Camden. He was not expt cud to live through last night, but this morning he was somewhat better. , . The. &coed District police during yesterday arrested thirteen persons on suspicionof having been the afsailants of McGurk. All were taken to the hospital, but he only identitied.one—a young man named John MeGrattimin. This p ri- SMUT was committed for a further hearing by Aid. Tint rmary, and the others were discharged. • A COIIDIAL . WE,COME.—Rev. W. C. Van Meter, of the Howard Mission and Home far Little Wanderers, in New York, received a hearty wel come in this city yesterday. Several of the largest churches were crowded to hear his state ments. Liberal collectiona were made at the Tenth Baptist Church (Rev. Mr. Kennard's), at the Spring Garden Church (Rev. L. P. Hornber gees), at the First Baptist Church (Rev. G. D. l3oardman's), and at the Arch Street Presbyterian Church (Rev. Dr. Willits's). At the latter Mr. Van Meter made thrilling statements in relation to the recent efforts to benefit the sta.tion-hotise lodgers at a breakfast meeting held at No. 40 New Bowery, New York, and also mentioned that he had made .qixty trips, to the West to furnish homes for children. Over "six hundred are now being eared for, and he wishes to find six hundred Sun day School classes or persons who will furnish twenty dollars each. After addresses by Rev. T. S. Malcom and Rey. Dr. WillitS, at the Arch Street Presbyterian Church last evening, the generous snip ()flour kroldn , d undjifty dollars was raised. More than fifty children were provided for as the result of the day. Mr. Van Meter and several of the pupils will be present at a public meeting to-night at Rev. Dr. Castle's church, in West Philadelphia. SUNDAY itionxo.—Dui ing yesterday afternoon there was a large s gatlu rnig of people on the Almshouse meadows. Some of the Schuylkill Rangers and a rival gang belonging to the west side of the river got into a fight. The affray got to be quite lively, and for a short time looked as if it mieht become serious. Stones were thrown about loosely, and knives and clubs were used. A German was severely cut with a knife, and several parties had, their heads injured by the flying stones. Several of the Sixteenth District Police, who were concealed in a house close by, rushed upon the rioters and captured Collins Johnson, Wm. McGlynn, Chas. McDermott, Michael Sheridan, Hach Harley and Lewis Manghey. The prisoners had a hearing before Alderman Maull, ant were committed for trial. ArrEmrmo Sutcton.—On Saturday evening Policeman Lamsbaek was informed that a man who had just passed him ou Arch street, had taken laudanum for the purpose of killing him aelf. He went after the men, and overtook him at Seventh and Arch streets.'l The fact that lauda num had been taken was hot denied. and the man was taken to the Sixth Ward Station- hou.,e. when the proper remedies.administered by Dr. Conard, relieved him of the poison. The would-be sui cide is named John Donohue. He belongs to Montgomery county. He says that his wife left him some time ago. and went to live in Bread street. He went there to see her, and she or dered him out of the house. He then swallowed the laudanum for the pmposc of ending his existence. FllZE.—Yesterday morning, 1.1)011t, 10 o'clock, a fire was discovered in the building No. 114 Pop lar street, occupied on the first floor by Thomas 11. Gill, liquor dealer, and in the upper stories by Isaac Baugher, cabinet maker and chair manufacturer. A hole was burned through the second al d third floors, and the tools of the workmen were destroyed. The los4 of Mr. Baugher was between $:.00 and $l,OOO, and ho is insured in the Royal of Liverpool. The tools of the men were also insured. The stock of Mr. Gill was valued at $10.000 : and some loss was sustained by the breaking open of barrels and demijohns. The building belongs to Sarah Gicker, and is also insured. The damage will not exceed $3OO. The entertainment will open with the comic operetta "Elopement of the Prin cess Carnival," to be performed by the members of the association: Every arrangement has been made for- the comfort and pleasure of the parti cipants in the affair, and the manner in which the former balls have been conducted is a suffi cient guarantee that the one of this evening will be successful a nd satisfactory. LARCENY OF A WATCO.—MICIIELOI Friel was ar rested on Saturday and - taken before Recorder Encu, upon the charge of the larceny of a gold watch belonging to James Hutchinson. Friel and Hutchinson worked in the same shop at Thirty-ninth and Bridge. streets. Hutchin son hung up his vest containing the watch, and went out for . few minutes. When he returned, the vest was gone and Friel was also 11116Eillg. The watch - was afterwards recovered at a pawn shop at Twenty-second and Callow hill streets. Friel was held for a further hearing. LIBERAL CONTIOWITION.—The Spring Garden Street Methodist Episcopal Church yesterday made a special collection for the benefit of the poor in that neighborhood, which resulted In the handsome contribution of $650. The exam ple is well worth following, at this season, when so much distress, necessarily exists amopg the poor. It is the more deserving (4 commendation from the fact that the congregation had, on the preceding .fiunday, given $2,600 as their annual contribution to the cause of foreign missions. A CONGIINGATION.—A young man named Thomas Pierce went to St. Stephen's Church, Germantown, last evening, and begsn to laugh and talk. Ile was remonstrated with quietly, but declared that nobody could put him out. A scuffle then ensued between him and another man. Pierce was finally escorted out by a policeman. This morning ho was arraigned before Aldt rmau Good, and was held in $l,OOO ball to answer at Court.
