A list of ten boys and eighteen girls was read as including the names of those entitled to "honorable mention." The oratorical exercises took place at National Hall on Friday evening. --Although none were admitted except by tickets, gratuitously distrib uted by the teachers and managers the large Hall was crowded ILI every part by an intelligent and interestOd audience about one-fourth of whom was of our white citizens. The exercises opened with a Latin salutatory, by Pliny Locke, which was prettily and gracefully deliv ered. "The Future of Italy," by Miss Sarah• L. Iredel ; "The Popularity of Queen Elizabeth," by Miss Frazelia Campbell; "The Diviria Comedia," by Fanny V. Camp, were ail well received, and evinced much breadth of thought and literary taste. A couple of spicy essays were read, one by Lucretia C. Miller, on "The German Invasion," and the other by Mary J. Hawkins; on "The Rosetta Stone," which gave salisfitetion, one of the young ladies receiving a fine bouquet. Of the orations bv the young gen tlemen, "Rome under Augustus," by Eugene R. Belcher; "Irish Rebellions," by Albert R. Johnson; "Onr Account with the Indians of the West," by William A. F. Armstead; "Thomas 'Carlyle," by Horace F: Owens, were particularly acceptable-as literary productions and were -well and grace thily delivered. The oration in the Orwk lan gusge,,by J. Wm. Cole, was given with remark able eitarnesk precision sand grace. "The New agr,m , , by Richard E. De R. Venning, "The MetOe'System of Weights and Measures," by JciAptcr. Seth, "Radicalism vs. Conservatism," by Charles N. Thomas, were well received. Two recitations by claslies of • boys and girls awe excellently given. The poem and the—''valedictory were' rather limpid. NAEHOW ESCAPE OF TliF CONTINENTAL HOTEL. —The Continental Hotel made a narrow escape from destrnetion on Saturday night. A gas light in the kitchen department of the hotel set fire to the adjacent woodwork. The flames worked their way between the ceiling and floor, and con tinued to burn stubbornly for upwards of half an hour. A stream of water from a hydrant in the building was poured through a hole cut in the Itooringand it was not until the space had been ,flooded the flames yielded. Many of the employds of the hotel, who slept .in the rooms over this part of the, building . , had retired, and the consternation among them was for a few minutes very great.
