Pollard was not onlynot housing upon his arm at theti encounteroot ing. but that she was at no period of the in a ' ,coition of peril to her life from the use of our iire.arms. Mr. S. Who, accompanied by myself, left this city on Wednesday night last, on the way to Baltimote. with the settee but sole determination of caning Pollard at the eat best possible moment, at the most convenient place, for the use of the language employed in the paper alluded to. We both bore firearms, he only derringer pistol with one barrel. These were necessary, but only to be used by either of us under the circumstances al ready indicated, and although events. compelled a de- nature in form from the original determination as to the course to be punned. yet the spirit of that determination -was stenily observed throughout, as will clearly appear from the following narration of fun which occurred in Baltimore after our arrival there on Thursday morning Having ascertained that Messrs. Wills and Smith. at torneys at law. could furnish informatio tho s e ' the where stouts of Mr. E. A. Pollard, we sought 'gentlemen and introduced ourselves as the son and nephew n itsGov vionde, Thelfe gentlemen told that error Wise, Mr. P.- boarded at the Maltby, liouse, and Mr. Smith added that was certain that . Pollard was then in • - Washington, he having a day or two before iron:tired for 'bim at his house and learned that fact. Mr. 'Smith. though particular to volunteer this informs. las to Mr. Polldrd'a absence in Washing lon, numedtatejv upon our retiring sent a messenger in heats to inform him (Pollard) that two Wises were in ti more prepared to shoot him upon right This he ec k ueot , !edged to me while ender arrest at the police station. His inetscager reached the. Maltby Howie in advance of us, and communicated the Message seat by Mr. Mr. P. and this messenger, as we were inforated after the affray left the hotel by a back window 'and west off through an alley in the rear. Upon arrival at. the hotel, John S. Wise asked to see E. A. Pollard, and we were shown into a parlor, while a servant went to inform him that we were in waiting. Mn'. Pollard entered shortly after, and advancing to Mr. John S. Wise, asked if he de sired to see her husband, to which he replied in the af firmative. She asked main etletlions, an d from them and her peculiar manner we discovered tkat she felt alarmed on some account, and wished to detain us. His replica were intended to keep her in ignorance of the af fair. She finally stated that her binband was not in, and -would not return to his hotel infers four or five o'clock in the afternoon, and wanted to know if our brudness was not of such a character as to be communidatee to her. We bowed oureelves from her presence. returning to the reception room. W'hile there Mr. John & Wise discovered that' Mrs. P. was watching our movements from the steps, and we found that a servant was in rays teatime communication with her. While seated in the reception room. from which gentlemen pass out into the street, and 100 out through the glass front, we ob. .sorred that Mrs. P. was ertan&ng at the ladies' entrance • anxiously talking to • gentleman. Mr. John B. Wise re. marked to mo that appearanceaintlleated that these people were preparing to produce a collision with arms, and that we must see Mr. Pollard before his wife had an opportunity of communicating with him. While thus convening a servant approached her, and in a moment left, prising up the street. She followed soon after. We then walked to the front of the hotel through the main entrance, and Mr. John S. Wise, stepping up to the gen. den= whom we had observed talking with hire. P., and from whom she had just separated, asked if he knew where Mr. Pollard was. The gentleman, with a wave of the hand, replied, "there hair. Pollard," pointingtowards lire Pollard and two gentlemen who were approach the ladies' entrance. John •8. Wise re turned at once to where I was standing, and we together istopped out upon the i i l i ,vement, neither of us knowing Mr. Po ll ard even by t. Mrs. Pollard and one of the gentlemen passed into t e hotel, the other walked rapidly towards us, drawing *pistol as he advanced, and, coming directly up to John id. Wise, with his pistol then or a ll y paay drawn. said. Well , air, what do you want with stetting his weapon fully out while asking the question. .Neither of us had drawn arms, neither had hand upon pistol John S. Wise hit his foot against the cane in his own band and it fell at the feet of Mr. Pollard. We were thus in his.front, at hie moron without any means of self defence or of attack. Mr. Pollard preparet and showing signs of an intention to take the initia tive. expected in a moment to see John S. Wise dead upon the pavement. .1 was unprepared to render him any assistance, never having tended to take any action against Mr. Pollatd, or to participate in any rencontre which might occur. As stated inthe beginning of this communication, I accom panied him simply .as a friend and adviser. Mefore I bad an opportunity to utter a word or to deterudne upon any comae 'of conduct, the firing betweea John S. Wise and Mr. Pollard commenced. They were in close quarters, and I could notions the effect of the shots, though certain that some one .must have been hurt. Probably both. as both tired. There was not the interval of two seconds between myTart and only shot and his second fire upon sue, when he retired into the ladies' entrance, and from the cover of the door aimed out upon me again. Mrs. /Pollard and others were there in the passage with him. and seeing that I could not fire a second time without endangering the lives of innocent persons. I concluded to desist. Amin threatened a third shot at me from the door. and as I was exposed without the ability of return ing hist fire, as just explained, I stepped to the door of a confectionary near at hand.
