WlEffe==Eß MIISICA L. -------------- , TuE Srxrz MATINEE of yesterday was fairly attended, and, as usual, the orchestral portion of the programme was the chief attraction. The I n p major was played with 'Haydn aymphony greater precision and delicacy of shading than Is usually bestowed upon such works in our city; and, while Mr. Sontz's orchestra shows room for marked improvement in both directions, its per are in the main •quite 'satisfactory. Mr. Sends . has at command a band comprising some forty of our best instrumentalista, and should meet with sufficient encouragement to enable him to increase its mem bers and effectiveness, in order that, at no drepet istant day,-we may be favored with fre- a u icons of the larger symphonies. With aview to this end, Mr. Bentz has done well in first essaying these simpler works of Haydn. Full of grace and beauty, clear in style and genial in conception, they form the proper ground work. preparing orchestra and audience with a sort of grodus acE Parnassom, schooling both to an appreciation of the wondrous tone-pictures of Mo zart, Beethoven, Schubert or Schumann. Con ducted in this spirit, these concerts will prove of enduring ,:benefit to our musical education. But to return to the performance of yesterday. The overture to the Magic Flute was well given. The concerto for trombone is exceedingly dint cult, and was hardly well enough played to render it interesting as a solo performance. As a com position it shows the cleverness of Its author, the Leipzig David, who, in the kindness of his heart, has composed solos for trombone, bassoon, and various tither instruments usually left unprovided for. If we take into regard the encouragement thus given td instrumentalists, we, have one clue to the subsequent proficiency of the Leipzig orchestra under the direction of Mendelssohh and his able coadjutor, Ferdinand David: The concerto fo; the trombone has this fault, in com mon with most of the solo-compositions of David : the orchestral accompaniments are so elaborate, and interesting as to divest the solo itself of all importance. Mr. Jean Louis sang Kiicken's "Farewell," but failed to interest us by his method or his voice. A delightful Strauss waltz and a common-place. galop were the re maining immbers on the programme.
