CITY' NOTICES. Proctor R Co" Weal Opening' of 'Purls land totadon tion.k,s and Liadies , liVealcing, !Arita. The most venerable resident will hardly remember a f user day in Philadelphia than Chestnut street pre :tented yesterday, especially in. its most central part, where the beauty and fashion of our city were at , traded to assist nt the „rand Exposition of fashion able garments f o r Indies, by Messrs. J. W. Proctor Sc o . Th e fan °Opening" which had been announced to take place at this elegant Emporium of Fashion created as profound a sensation among the ladles of :Philadelphia as the arrival of Sheridan excited' among our politicians; and theirenthusiasm, though differently exple, qat, was no le,s earnest and appreciative. From an early hour until late in the afternoon the miming throng, passing in. circulating through, and emerging, from the splendid salesrooms of this estab. lishmt nt tir,No. 520 CheSthut street, kept up such a onrmiou9:Frcile of busy life as we have' rarley wit nessed. The visitors. in the main room alone, for several hours during the day, could not have"averaged less then from fifty to 'one hnndred and fifty hand somely-dretlikd ladies. From a retired nook. utters, in company with one of the proprietors, the writer took his observations. the effect was a perfect specta de—a sort of kelehhis ,, opie. pan anus, in which there was a masterly intermingling of lair women, and here and there a brave man, with maoificent garments and splendid specimens of materials from Nvhlch to make them; limy attendants engaged in eloquent explana tions to interested listeners, with here a bevy of beau ties lavishing. their adoration around the Duchess of Wellington, the Princess of Wales, or the Empress F.uOnle r. garments bearing these popular names), and in the adjacent fitting rooms (apartments that are, mirrored and upholstered with a degree of taste and elegance that we have never seen surpassed) ladies, young and middle-aged, and some well advanced in life, an diverse in their preference as in their ages, Wei Obi t futures' ONO Alies,'"ag r Beautiful!" " Perfectly sweet!" " Charming! "How very stylish!" "0, isn't that lovely'?" "There, isn't that elegant?" "I never saw anything so hand some!" "My dear, you're crazy!" and a hundred other simila exclarnations, mingled with the measured Wilkes of polite clerks and the ceaseless rustling of silks and s.atins. Altogether it Was. the grandest anti most successful exhibirc.r, of fashionable: garments for ladies' wear ever mails in Philadelphia. A description of the varions new garments exhibi ted could only be snceessful in an illustrated joarL nal, and we shall therefore not attempt it, beyond a brief allusion to some few of the chief attractions it) the opening, and the materials from which they were Among the Most elegant, and we think they will lie among the most ilopular novelties of the SeaSoa, are the snit , of As,tracon -Aiot an imitution, butt the real shin of the animal.. They were exhibited in while, and black, and tunic up in full suits. embracint: cloaks, nuiffs, cuffs, collars and capes. In rich cloth goods and velvets the display was princely.' The two colors that wilt be mostly in vogue during the season are a beautiful shade of violet and the new color called the Bisramck -.a rich golden brown. Iu the former of these shades a gored .woolen ..velvet ue, richly trimmed with satin and studded with jets, ryas, universally admired; and the same may be said of a Bismarek of like material, and similarly trimmed. One of the most unimie garments Was the •'Erginie" cloak. Jr was exhibited in various ma terials, and in its construction IS gored, scalloped at the sides, with prominent points at the front and back. A "Marie Louise" cloak in the display, made of a rich velvet leaver, and exhibited in various colors, also elicited marked attention, and resulted in numerous “orders." A very graceful cloak, made of wine colored velours, richly trium.cd, entitled the "Lady Welling ton," seemed to be a special favorite with ladies of more snbdned taste. The "ColleenTawn" is a pretty protege of Mr. Proctor, and will 'undoubtedly he one of the most popular cloaks of the season. The display was also enriched by a -iplendid line of Velvet Patelots, trimmed with a crochet of cut bead, and a graceful style of garment. entithl the "St. Marc," made of vel vet,. and trimmed with a heavy fringe of sewing silk, with a crochet heading richly ornamented with beads, though for elegance and comfort there was nothing more striking than their JAW "Walrussia"—a splendid velvet, trimmed in silver for. The "Duchess of Suth erland" has a wide eleece, overhanging, an under-sleeve of the Snmo material, presentingan - appearance at once graceful and stylish. -There was also. exhi bited an elegant assortment of Circulars in velvets, richly trimmed in lace and crochet work. lint it must not he forgotten that the fife.s: , -.Vokin.i Drpo - .1;11( . ;;1 of this house is a feature of surpassing importance to the ladies of our city-- a . great conveni ence in fact, where they :an have their orders attended to with instantaneous promptness, instead of being subjected to the usual delay. at this nisrseason of the year. . . „, • . . Oakforde Onkfordn Vicatnut alma Porerstit Sonars Orit.Nnio.---Iri Bonnets and Millinery Goods yesterday was witnessed a regular furore among the ladies. The • well-knos,vn house of Messrs. li. P. Gill & Co., No. 720 Arch street, held what might be designated a grand millinery levee from morning till night, during which time Some thousands of ladles samt have paid their customary devotions at the fashionable shrine which Messrs. Gill As - Co. have long since elevated into popular recognition. In fact. this house may challenge comparison in the taste which It uniformly displays in the selection, - and pre sentation of beautiful Parisian Bonnets. In their "opening - yesterday, while the admiration expressed 'was mdmanded and general, the critical praise was fairly divided among a somber of choice Bonnets and' Hats, which may be briefly particularized as follows: A full-size drab bonnet, with cased front, made of a rich royal velvet, with a Fntin veil of, the same shade falling from the back; the face trimming of scarlet velvet. One of the most beautiful things iu the display was a pimple royal velvet bonnet, with velvet trimming ex tending from the front, With clasps of velvet pansies, and figured net streamers falling at the sides. Much attention was gi ven to, and not a few orders given for, a superb Miss's bonnet of White French felt, with a milling of blue satin on the face, and a bandeau of blue velvet and pink boils; the outer trimming forming a point at the back, edged with fritge. There were many other choice things in this department, which we must pass over in order to glance at the dis play of hats. Of these, as in the bonnets, there is a variety of shapes and styles. The bonnets, we may remark en va. , Napt, are decidedly more bonnet-like, both in form and eiv.e, than they have been for several seasons, and the style of Bats to be worn are also worthy of our regard as tangible coverings for the head. Those displayed by Messrs. Gill & Co. are ex tremely pretty, and to misses and ladies on the sunny side of--, unusually becoming. A handsome brown Velvet hat in the "opening," with high crown, pointed front and back, with a trim mm of royal'vei'et and "lit fring,e, , seented most favor with young married ladies. A black velVet hat, with blue ostrich tip, velvet quilling and blue satin lining, was also a favorite, the laurels of which were contested by a superb drab felt, with flat crown and rolled brim, and a trimming of brown velvet hand somely ornamented with steel and fringe. We may state in conclusion that the prevailing colors are Bismarck, drab And blue. and that satins and laces constitute the prominent material ,, for trimmings. The "opening" was in decided success. ' All the French bonhets and hats displayed were of their own direct importation, and their assortment of general Millinery Goods was complete and admirable in every, particulai . . We need not comment upon the fact that Messrs. Gill & Co. have always maintained a reputatien for selling at litochYatr iee,,as their reputation in this particular is proverbial. .
