Tritvcl lit Pennsylvania. WhUc other parts of the country, particularly | .j.c North and the extreme West boast grand rO B t.'iinS.ivnierfaUp, valleys and lakes, pur own ‘ old State has varieties of scenery that would excite the rapturous enthusiasm ejj Philadelphia tourists except for the reason that they cannot persuade themselves that what is so near their own doors can be so grand and pictureeqe as that which is sought for at a distance. The Allcgha n'es with their grand mountain sweeps as seen along the line of the Pennsylvania Railroad; ‘tne beautiful scenery of the Catawissa; the Susquehanna, with its many islands and lovely shores; the head waters of the Dcla *“*®j and last, hut not least, the Wyoming vallev and, the romantic vallcj ol the Upper Lehigli, that are now clasped together bv the iron binds of the Lelrigb Valley byroad which climbs the intervening menu am and links the shores of the tumultuous «« mountain ";k. of the Susquehanna at 1\ likcsoarre. , would take the cars of the North Railroad at Berks street, m tins city, he would Bpccdily he wafted through the beautitul though Wet scencrv of Montgomery county, and the lower portion of Lehigh, to Bethlehem. From this ancient seat of the Moravians his route lies North, along the banks of the Lower Lehigh, and the practical and the pieturesque are blended constantly together in beautiful and striking scenery, and in such - utilitarian objects as coil,’ iron, limestone and slate mines and qnh r " rielsf fiiitfiaces 'and loliing v; mills, saw mills, rafts, prosperous towns and 1 all the other evi dences of thrift and remunerative industry. Farther up the river he will find himself among the rich coal regions of Carbon and Luzerne, and as the swift gliding train conveys him along the rolling and tumbling stream, he will see a succes sion of mountains, rocks, beetUng crags, and sparkling cascades, with occasional glances along quiet and fertile vaUies that contribute to the making up as beautiful scenery as can be found elsewhere in the country. New Hampshire ant Vermont, exhibit loftier mountains and more ol them, and deeper vallies than can be lound along the upper Lehigli; bit lor pieturesquenoss, wild ness and natural beauty, we will put forward the Lehigh as the equal of anything that can be found in the Adirondack, Green Mountain, lUute Mountain or Franconia regions. „ _ ■\D(I tbun th<i ride over the that separates Leldgh from Wyoming, with the .rramtteope of theAlewiYom the summit, iu.n of it«elf should lie a suflieient recompense tor the trouble and cost of the journey. In descending the mountain the lovely Wyotmug \akej spread out like a map. and V, ilkesbarre is.-eeu lvitig at the foot of the mountain witu the North Branch of the Susquehanua rolling quietly along its northern skirt, and reliecting in its bosom the pretty spires and elegant mansions ot the pros perous borough.. The inexperienced tourist who pays a first visit to the capital of Luzerne county, would naturally expest to find more or less eoin fortaiiled quarters in some country tavern where Hhtk". corned-beef and mutton would be reasonably good, aud the ■ apple pies and homemade bread would be up to the country average. Let him proceed to the Wyoming Valley House, on the bank ot the river, and he will find a hostelry that is inferior in size to but few in the great cities, and that is . far superior in external elegance and internal convenience to the vast majority of first-class; hotels throughout the country. The house is as elegant in respect to its fTtruiture and other ap pointments as in the style of the structure itself; and no more excellent table is kept at any hotel in Boston, New York or Philadelphia. “Good wine needs no bush,” and the Messrs. Ward Co., the proprietors, need no newspaper praise to commend their house to any one who is at all familiar with Wilkcsbarre. But their house de serves something more than a passing notice as a model hotel—we were going to sat, of a/Fural district—but for substantial comfort and tasteful elegance itwould not take a second rank beside the best managed house in Tremont street, Broadwav, avenue, Chestnut street 01 Pennsylvania avenue. POLITIC Ala. ft< Majs* Meetinff on Broad Street. The- lk'publiran party assembled in vast num bers on Saturdav evening. in'front of the Union League House. ''Broad street, from Sansorn to 'Walnut streets, was densely packed'with voters, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. The League House was brilliantly illuminated with gasjeG. which.displayed the names of Grant. Sheridan, Sickles,- Geary.- Thomas, Howard and other patriotic heroes. The porch in front of the building was handsomely draped , with tri colored bunting, and at the close of the meeting a handsome display of fireworks took place. The meeting was called to order by -lolni Price Wethei'iH, Ksip. who proposed for President of the meetiug Colonel-John W. Forney. The following gentlemen acted as Vice. He urged Pennsylvanians to be true to the issues caused by the war. Though the army is disbanded; though our troops have gone home, the same issues live and cannot be repressed. We have put down the rebellion, and now the qnestion with us is, whether we are going to maintain that all men who have been created free and equal, are going to remain so. In 1866 the Southern Loyalists' Convention de clared that we must come back to negro suf frage. Judge Kelley, in response to calls for a speech, said that during his recent trip through eight States, he was everywhere ashed, “Whatiß 1 enii sylvania going to do? Will she falter now, or will she demand the impeachment of Andrew Jolin son?” | Cheers. ] lie had told the people Unit Pennsylvania would do the latter. ' Hon. A. G. Kiddle was next introduced. He discussed the reconstruction policy of Congress. The speaker did not undertake to say that the Congress of the United States had all possible leg islative power; he only knew that it had all the power that existed under the Government ot the United States, and nobody must infringe upon it. He who stands in the way becomes an obstacle to the execution of the outspoken decree of a gi/a people ns enacted in the voice ot the Houses, with or without the Presidential ab sent; and that obstruction must and wul be re moved. He concluded that the President was indictable for felony or any other crime, that the penalty of conviction involved a removal from office. He referred to the negro sufirage in the District of Columbia,. and; de clared that the political knowledge and general caiVacity-fif the'African raetphad been sadly and . terribly under-estimated by the people country. What had happened m Washington and Tennessee would happen all over the South, and the emancipated and enfranchised Kepubll eansof that section would take care ol those States. It was for Pennsylvania to do her duty; the South would do hers. r Colonel R. Stockett Matthews, of Baltimore, the next speaker, said that for six years the I <:- mocratic party had misled, cheated and defrauded the people who chiug to it, and the <iuestion now was whether they should again be intrusted with power. More than one-half of the cost ot the war and the losses on the battlc-fleld were occa sioned bv the action of these' rebel Democrats for five year's, because of their opposition to the war. Without the left wing in the North the right . wing of the rebels in the South would have been beaten in two years. They were not eutit.ed to the treatment extended to great political organi zations, for tliev lmd never attempted to put a i-ood law Sli the statute books. He urged uiion his audience that it was a solemn duty to i-iiore side issues and support the candidates ot the Republican party, for the moral piled winch a victory would bring. Cftngress asks lor an expression'of confidence iu them, and an expres sion in opposition to the reconstruction scheme of Andrew Johnson. They’ asked this as the representatives of the Government, which is the people. He concluded hv imploring his listeners, as tliev loved their children, .and valued their happiness, to go to the polls and speak in such tones as not to'be misunderstood: Speeches were made by Judge Pitkin, ot Lou isiana,-Hon. Charles O’Neill, General Muzzey and others, and great enthusiasm prevailed. A'Republican Gathering at German- town* The Republicans of Germantown were ontm considerable forcfc on Saturday evening, at the Town Hall, to listeii to addresses by Governor Gear}’, M. Russell Thayer, Esq., and others. The meeting was organized by the selection of Wm. G. Spencer, Esq., as Chairman. Gov. Geary was reoeived with much applause, , and said that when approaching the beautiful village of Germantown- his mind wns tilled with recollections of the times long gone past, and of him who once trod that historic ground—ot him who was “lir.st in war, first in peace, and first.in the hearts of his countrymen.” The. speaker felt assured that were he and Ins heroic comrades among us at this time'they would be with U 6; that he Would be with that party that was for the Union for which be had periled bis life. A crisis is approaching, and it requires men to meet it. Now is not the time to criticise candidates. AVe must not inquire which man is the best, but, sliould sacrifice our personal feelings, and vote the whole ticket, and nothing but the ticket. . , , He referred to the iaet that every, vote east a (r ainst any candidate ol the Republican party avas a vote" for Andrew Johnson, a man who would lic king, and who intended, if the ap proaching elections in Pennsylvania and New York went Democratic, to consider.it as an cu dor.-ernent of hi, infamous policy, and Unit then he would place ids foot in the middle of the Con stitution. uiilurl the old flag over Ids head, and declare himself the government, and all who op pose him—Congress and all-Arailors.. lie, how ever continued to speak in his usual impressive manner for an hour and twenty minutes. Bnbea ill I lie Wood-An Incident in \ Ausiruliti. An English paper has this story from Aus-' tralia: ■ “Three tiny boys, colony born, of Dayles fortl, in Victoria, started into tbe bush to look , for some runaway goats. The eldest was only seven: but Australian lads and lasses have a continent for a playground, and nothing was feared. When, however, the i little ones missed the dinner booty ami then i ten, the parents grew anxious, (find searched j the neighborhood in vain. Night fell, and j with the aid of the local police the search \ was extended, and though it lasted till the j morning the children were still missing. At dawn a storekeeper came in who lmd | seen the small wanderers on the road over i night: and then a boy, who had j given them the right direction as he passed, j This was all that couULbe gained throughout , the second day; but now the little scattered ; community had heard of the loss, and was on j the alert. "The quartz miners put their tools , by and went out into the bush; so did the sawyers at the steam mill; and so did the "-woodcutters in the scrub; and.the- third -day-.; was thus passed in a Vigorous search. Still no trace or tidings, except a faint footmark going in the wrong direction towards the W ar ribec river, and therotore tpe good folks were growing much concerned, audit was settled,' at a public meeting that all hands should strike work and go to look for the babies. “Accordingly next day—the fourth—every shop was shut, every tool and implement was .ieft idle; six or seven hundred men, women and boys turned out in all directions into the • dense set üb, to bunt the strayed ones up. Seventy pounds-were collected as a reward for the finder; though no oue wanted that mcen ■ tive, and the man at the steam mill kept the ■whistle going all day to guide the little feet home, if they were still able to stir, or days these kindly souls of the Victorian town ship kept at the hunt, ll was on vain; at the end of the week the shops i-Vad to be re opened, and work mournfully resumed, for the children could not be discovered. The heart-broken parents publicly thanked their iieighboi-s for doing all that human gentleness ancl good will could do,and sotlip melancholy narrative ends, for the children! were hope lessly lost and must have laid down to die in the wilds. It will be hereafter a colonial tale to match our. British ‘Babes ini the Wood,’ with the blackbird and the bell bird for ‘cock robin,’and the generous Daylesford folk to make a pleasant verse instead of the “wicked uncle.’'' How tadio« Bntlie in France. A bathing costume is of course- essential,' and the fair sex take especial care that, so fur as they are concerned, this shall be suffi ciently coquettish and engaging. It will be cither" a /a pcplum, cirdansiene noire or iunjue, au canoticr, debardcur, or » matclot, with miniature yachts or anchors figured on the flaps of the collars and the cuffs of the natty little sailor jacket. _ Other requi sites are canvas slippers with red soles to protect the feet; a nerre tete to save the hair from getting wet; a peiffnoir to throw over the shoulders after emerging from the see; a tub of hot water, to remove ' the loose sand from the feet, and baked linen with which to dry yourself. Besides the ordinary bathing, cabins, there are cabanes n pot —that is, machines wheeled right into the sea, after our vulgar English fashion; cabonen du htxe, which, if their names do not belie them, ought to combine all the luxuries of the ancient Homan and the mo dern Turkish bath. „ , The bathing quartlm of the two sexes are marked out with flags, and divided by ropes: and when bathing is going on at high water it is dcfrndn for the individuals or the male swr-'cven to walk in front of the qvarlin- <t< damcx; and such is the pru dery of the authorities of Trouvillc, that, spite of all these restrictions, there are posted up all over the bathing ground no less than from a dozen to fifteen police ordinances, propounded- with a 1 view of insuring public decency. There is, of course, nothing to prevent person of opposite sexes inter changing any amount of courtesies with eacli other while bathing, provided they only keep on their respective sides o'f-the rope. Thus a lady will pass down to her hath with a gentleman gallantly holding a sunshade over her head, and which he only relin buishes to throw a pciqnoir across her shoulders when she emerges, Venus-like, from the sea. — Tinnlet/'n Mogazinr. f Reported Sr.t£s ■ fjvening Bulletin, '.
