SIIIiKIBAS. Thr lollowlmr P<**>written during the wav by fellow, townsman, Richard Coe, 1 peculiar significance at the present time when (be nation en matsf are honoring the noble soldier Sheridan: , Xlie Battle of Cellar Cruelc. ltV UH lIAltl) C“K Beaten, and in sad disorder, Not a soldier heeds the order, “Rally, rally for the Right!” All he cares for is for flight. Down the valley of disaster, Hurrying fast, and following faster, Plunged each horse and urged each master, Oh! but 'twas a piteous sight! Custer. Merritt, vainly shout “Rally,‘boys, and face about, Stay" this most disgraceful rout!” All alODg the line there ran “Where, Oh, where is Sheridan?’’ Twenty miles away is he, Zounds! that such a thing should be! Seated on his charger black, Hast'nlng to his army back, ,>-< the lightning in its course, " - rirrth a niiglity torrent's fot;ce„.,, Onward sped his noble horse, Clouds of dust were in his track! Met by men bewailing flight, “Pshaw!” he said, “PH fix it right, Forward, forward to the fight!” All along the line there ran Words of cheer from Sheridan! HI befel to them, that day, That the rebels sought the fray; Broke their shattered ranks and fled, Leaving heaps of dying, dead!. Now with shouts of joy and laughter, ~ Echoed back from Heaven’s own ratter, Dashed our gallant troopers after, Till the field with blood was red! Soldiors hugged each other then, Cried and laughed by turns again, Morolikc girls than stalwart men; While along the line there ran Cheer on cheer for Sheridan! Who shall claim for him alone All the victory as his own? True, a man of stubborn will, Joined with great chivalric skill, After that his troops retreated, Wounded, bnfllod, and defeated, Had, upon his charger seated, By his presence scut a thrill Into every soldier's heart; But tho natiou a start, Moved as by electric , dart! While from lip to lip there rau “God! and Philip Sheridan!” CITY NOTICES. Caku to tiif. Puhlic.—The undersigned, Trus tees of the Riverside Institute,' au institution char tered by the State of New Jersey, l'or the maintenance and education of the Orphans of the Soldiers and Sailors of our whole country, which is being estab lished aud endowed by the enterprise and patriotism or the Washington Library Company of Philadelphia, would announce to the public that in their opinion the efforts being made by that Company for the establish ment and endowment of the Riverside Institute cannot ail of sucoess. Their agencies have been established, and their advertisements published throughout the country at great expense, and the results are now being realized. If the distribution were to take place, and the labors of the Company cease on the 26th Instant, as advertised, the Institution, though established, would not have provided the means for apropor and perma nent continuance, nor could it be so extensively useful as the public and the Trustees desire. After mature consideration, we have therefore re eommendefl that the Washington Library Compauy postpone their distribution until the Sth of Jannary next, and continue the saie ol certificates and engra vings until tnat time, under the firm belief that the result will assuredly provide a permanent home for the maintenance and education of very many of the orphans of tboße who have died in the service of their country.
