There was a lull meeting of the Committee, and the subject was introduced by a motion of Mr. Stokley to fix the rate at $1 to. Mr. Harper suggested that this would be use less. aud the rate would not produce the amount actually required, according to the Controller’s statement. It ,$1 -to is decided upon there will be nearly $3OO/000 short of the amount needed to pay the appropriations. Iu addition to this there would be no margin for contingent expenses. Sonic discussion followed in'regard to the re liability of tin: estimates, and Mr. Hancock, the Controller’:! chief clerEi was appealed to with reference to the several Departments and the probability that the amounts specified would be ail.that would be. demanded. ' ill auswer. Mr. Hancock said that when first applied to. the Gits Trustees bad reported that the amount for ligld ing the city in 180 s would be the same as in iso,. lutt since the estimates had been put in form they imported that $150,01i0 more than the first estimate' would lie needed. In this extra amount. $O5 pier lamp was proposed to lie charged for each lamp, in stead of $4B, as last year. As an offset to this, the members of the Board of Revision had stated during the day that the estimated value of real estate as printed was below the actual figures, as there would be added to that sum from slB,out),- (.00 to $20,0110,000 for improvements in .progress and to be finished before November. In Novem ber there will be another assessment, and if $15,- (1(10,000 be added to the value of real estate, this, at $3 40, will yield $210,000 more.in taxes than i.- estimated now. v Several members suggested that the estimated appropriations to the department could be cut down, while Mr. Potter said he believed the city ( ouid anticipate $781,000 more .income from the Water Department_ihan is estimated in the Cou irollers Department: Alter this discussion, Mr. Spering moved to make the rate $1 15 ; Mr. King moved to make it $l. 85, Mr. Spering urged that if $1 40 was the rate, there would be a deficiency of at least $200,000, and $1 35 would still further increase the defi ciency. *> Mr. King said that lie proposed to cut down the appropriations; in order to make the rate cover the expenses of 3 808. Mr. Spering said he did not believe the appro priations would be cut down to any very great extent, unless it was proposed to have extra ap propriations before the close of the year. Mr. Potter said that lie believed that $1 40 would be sutiieient. because wo might expect an increase on the valuation of the property, while there would be an increase of the income. But he could not see how $! 35 would he enough. Tlie motion to make the rate $1 85 was lost yeas 3, nays 9. The motion to fix the rate at $1 45 was lost—yeas 2, nays 10. The tax rate was then fixed at $1 40. P ll ii.ADi'i.eii ia B.v-k B.u.i. The following curious account of the mar riage oi" a Hindoo girl to an idol is given lly the Oude Ga~ctlc: ‘ ‘Some time ago a paper of tlie north western provinces announced tlie arrival of an old Deccan Brahmin with his family in the town of Mutlira, where Hungacharee, the high priest of the Ramanoojee sect, greatly patron ized him. The old Brahmin has two daugh ters, one a grown up girl, and the other only nine years old. While residing at Mutlira tlie younger gill gave out that K-risluiajce (ofte of the incarnations of Vishnu, the Hin doo god), appeared to her in a dream, and proposed a nuptial alliance with her. Next day the girl was, with great pomp, married to an idol worshipped m a Hindoo temple. The ignorant and su perstitious people rejoiced at this absurd marriage, and began to venerate the girl as an inspired being. Both the girls have learned by healing eighteen thousand couplets of the ‘Bhugwut,' a work in the Sanscrit language. They have now arrived in this city and put up at a house in' the vicinity of the ‘Gole Durwaza.' Every morning Hindoos of all ages and sexes congregate there to hear the melodious recitations of the two girls. Both tin- girls consider themselves as dedicated lo tlie service of the god Krishna; and after their daily recitations .are concluded they make no "hesitation in accepting such pre lects of money and sweetmeats as their bearers may choose to givq them.
