—The steamship Hibernian, from'Quebeci
and the City of Washington, from New
York, arrived here this morning. !
London, Dec. 12,1 o’clock.—The steamer
Bolivar; which was seized in the river
Medway yesterday, on suspicion of'being
a Fenian Privateer, has been placed under
a strong guard. Everything about her in
r dicates that she was about to start on a
cruise to prey upon British commerce.
Bomb, December 12, Zp. o’clock.—The
French Minister, Count Montebello has in{
formed the Pope that if he withdraws from
the-Holy City,- the'French troops hereafter
will give him no support,

received-at General Grant’s Headquarters,'
from General Sheridan, add nothing of im
portance in reference to afiairs on the Bib
Grande to the newspaper , reports already!
published. A detailed report in reference,
to recent occurrences in that quarter, is ex
pected from General Sheridan, by mail, inj
a few days, and it is not deemed advisable!
to anticipate it by the publication of his;
telegraphic despatches. j

New Obleans, ..Deo; 12.—The New Or
leans papers contain to-day additional Mexi
can news, furnished by Col. John G. Fisher.
Gen. Castelnan arrived at Vera Croz, just
as Gen. Donaly, with his troops, (in the lat
ter part oi October), was about embarking.
The troops immediately returned to the
city of Mexico, and left for Oaxaca on the
26th of November, recapturing that place
from Diaz,who had taken from the Austrian
troops about 3,500 men in brigades, on the
march to Oaxaca.
Maximilian has about 2,000 Belgians,
15,000 Austrians, 30,000 Mexicanlrnperial
ists, and 25,000 French troops, armed, cloth
ed, fed and paid (including officers;, fifteen
days in advance.
, On the 3d of December, Maximilian is
sued a proclamation declaring his intention
to remain in Mexico.
A great inducement for Maximilian to re
main -was the arrival of Miraffion and Mar
quez from Europe. They pledged them
selves to a war with Meiia against the Lib
erals, ‘
Marquez’s headquarters were at Puebla,
and Miramon’s at, Gnanapnata. Mejia was
at San Luis Potosi, where he now is.
General Yidaurri has been appointed
Special Commissary of the Department of
Monterey.,
- The States in Mexico are no longer known
as such, the imperial rule having converted i
them into Departments, several States to i
compose a Department.
The statement that General Sherman has
denied admission inVera Cruz is untrue. 1
It was supposed that he wished to hold a j
conference with-Castelnau, and orders were |
given tq the Prefect to put an extra train at
his disposal, and afterwards a guard coach
frpmthe railroad terminus, with a hundred
French r soldiers, and thus conduct him to
the city of Mexico.
The Susquehanna anchored 'about six
jnileS;from Yera Cruz, but did not go into
the harbor. ■ - !
Instead, of the, troops going awav, there
Was’good reason, fi>r believing that more
are on the way. The prospects of Maximil

Nathaniel Paschall, Sr., editor of the Mis
souri Republican, died at four o’clock this
morning, aged six-tour years.
He commenced the printing business as
an- apprentice at the Republican office. 52
years ago, apd was the oldest editor west of
the Mississippi river, if not the Allegheny
Mountains, and was regarded as one of the
most influential citizens of St. Louis, and
■universally esteemed. /

Court met at 9.30 A. M. Mr Devlin pro
ceeded to argue the second plea to the juris
diction, the Court contending that the £m-
PMlal statute 11 and Delimiting banishment
lor such offences as are charged against the
prisoners to transportation or imprisonment
. , ce this 'Province; and that his
nt TT l s “ ou ld have.been indicted under this
act. He has now commenced to argue his
plea in bar, that the prisoners cannot be
tried under an ex post facto law, which he
contends is the character of the act under-,
which the indictment is laid.
