!THEMISSING STEAMSHIP BRITANNIA. Thirty-four Days Out—List of the Passengers. fFrom to-day’s New York Herald. | Use first notice of the steamship Britannia, of the Anchor line, being over dne, was published in the JZerald t cn Sunday, No ■vember 25. As thirty-four days have now elapsed since she put to sea, serious appre hensions for her safety are entertained by those having friends and relatives on board. The Britannia plied between Glasgow and New York. She left the former port on the 3d of November; .touched at Moville, below Londonderry, on the 4th, and left on the same day for New York. Sjnce then no tidings have been received of her. The last dates from St. Michaels (one of the Western islands) aria to November 8, and from Fayal (another of the Western islands) to Novem ber 10; as she may have since pat into one of these places in distress, or been driven farther towards home to the Island of St. Thomas, or some other of the West India Islands, there are still hopes that the miss ing steamship may be safe. The Britannia is a bark-rigged screw steamer of 1,391 tons. She was built in the Clyde, by Todd & McGregor, in 1868 ; has two engines, with 360 horse power, and has been running since she was launched: If her machinery should have become broken or disarranged so as to render steam power useless, her propeller could be removed on deck. The Britannia is commanded by Captain James Laird'. List of Passengers Ei Sovembi .. FIRST Alias Greyly, Miss Park. . "Win McCallum, ' John Goxdon,. Agnes Gordon. Ellen o. Gordon, John Colville, "Wm. The Lumber Trade op Chicago.—lt appears from statistics published in the JUpublican that the I umber trade of Chicago is growing rapidly. The following figures are given: Number of firms, Number of hands employed, Total horse-power used, - Neet of material made in sash, doors and. blinds per month, - 1,216,000 Feet of surfacing per month, - 5,810,000 Feet of flooring per month. - 6,180,000 Neet of siding per month, - 7,690,000 Feet of material made into boxes per month, - - The Bebublican Bays: “From Grand river ■we obtain a good supply of ordinary com mon lumber; - from Grand : Traverse and Pere Marquette comes good sound common -lumber for fencing and flooring; and from Manistee large quantities of square-lumber are obtained. For this variety of the ma terial there is a rapid demand, owing to the magnitude of the bridge-bnilding trade, for "which square lumber is largely used. In admtion to the large, demand for railroad bridges, consequent upon the western ex tension of important lines of railways, our bridge-Duilders have been largely occupied in filling government contracts for the resto ration of bridges destroyed during the pro secution of the war in the States of Ken tucky, Georgia, Tennessee and Louisiana.” At Mubray’s annual trade sale in Lon don, last month,. the following numbers ■were subscribed for by the Lendon book sellers: One thousand two hundred Lyell’s Principles, four hundred of his Elements of Geology; six hundred Ferguson’s History of Architecture, four hundred King George the Third’s Correspondence with Lord Hortb, five hundred and fifty Darwin on Species, six hundred and fifty MUtfian’s Jews, three volumes: three hundred Guizot on Christianity, one hundred and eighty Grote s Greece, eight 'volumes,'" and two hundred and twenty of his Plato, three volumes; two thonsahd eight hundred Byrons Works, one thousand Hallam’s Histories, two thousand six hundred Sm tth’s Classical Dictionaries; four thousand three hundred Latin Dictionaries, twelve thou s? hundred Greek and Latin Course, six thousand eight hundred smaller histo ries, fiTO hundred Murray ’s British Classics, three hundred and fifty Hook’s Church Dichonaryj- seven^thousand' five Hundred thousand nine hundred Mrs. Markham’s Histories, five thousand Murray’s Student’s Manuals! and two thousand Murray’s ’ f, R “’»-- T he rioe crop of Cape Fear, N. That first man though!, he was doing a very smart thing. Perhaps so; but we are not Sauasure. ; ' • 1 There were 35 Boston “drummers” at“a hotel in Bangor recently. Such a“longroll” 3s hard to beat, even among the Maine Ban geis, The medical savans of Germany have de cided that the exhalations of plants produce fever and ague. On the principle of curiog with “a hair,of the dog that bit you” they re£ commend patients who have exhaled too much to try XX-ale. A volume of sermons by Bishop Colenso is on the eve of publication. It will make a neat birth-day present, being full of Natal ideas. Some statistical genius declares that more money is expended in the United States for cigars than lor all the common sohools in the.country. A wag, who is undoubtedly a y>? ed ’ seein S the statement go the papers, gets off the folio w mg. It has been.calculated that the cost of washing linen that might as well be'worn two days longer, amounts to enough in this country to more than defray the expenses of tne-Amenoan Board of Foreign Missions. The expenses of buttons oh the backs of coats, where they are of no earthly use, is equal to the support of all of our orphan asylums. The yalue of tails to dress-coats (of no value m reality for warmth or conve nience) is actually greater than the cost of oar excellent system of common schools. It is estimated that the value of old boots thrown aside, which might have been worn at least a day longer, is more than enough night-gown for every baby j We are gladto learn that the United States are at last about to behalf of the persecuted people of Candla. Arrangements are being made to give Turkev a first rate dressing—about Christmas time.! The cable news, according' 'to a morning paper, informs us that “provisious exhibit no lew features, and the demands for all kinks is moderate.” The depreciation of kinks is a good sign. , . , gymnast named Garcia, at a circus in Havana, fell the other day from a height of forty feet during a performance, and dislo cated both wrists. A gym-nasty accident. Obstructions in the Savannah Rives" —The Savannah (Ga.) Aetes urges the legis lature to make an adequate appropriation for the opening of the Savannah river. The numerous obstructions which were placed m the river during the war have made the channel in some places very tortuous, and in others very shallow; so that it Isonlv with the greatest difficulty that vessels of heavy tonnage can reach the. city. The municipal authorities have negotiated the purchase of a dredging machine, in the ex pectation that the legislature will grant them assistance. The .A eu>s claims that the im provement of the channel is a benefit to the whole State, and that if it is hot effected the success of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, in State has invested nearly $1,000,000, will be seriously endangered. ' Another Shooting Affair —A. trivial mcident occurred at Lexington, Va., a few days ago. One of General Lee’s pupils shot and killed a respectable black man of that town., pn his examination he stated that the negro had “insulted him.” Thisstate ment was corroborated by spectators of the occurrence. The learned Dogberry; who heard the case made the following points in his decision: That the laws of Virginia have always recognized the difference between the white man and the black; that a white man may protect himself from negro in sults; that; though the deed was clearly proved, it was the result of the insult, and he should discharge the defendant from custody. Louisiana. Tile Governor of Louisiana has Issued -warrants for an election to fIU vacancies m the Legislature. It was thought that the establishment at an eirlv day of a provisional government, would prevent ac tion. Sugar cane has not been kept for seed, nearly all being ground. The cotton is gathered and ginned. This has not oc curred so early in the season for the past W ye The yield of sugar will be small, not from failure of crops, but little can be planted and that will be mostly used for seed. All the cotton may be expected to be in by the Ist of January, as planters are not m circumstances to hold out of the market. BELIGIOUS NOTICES. BEHGIOIIS JfOTIC ES.
