From Mexico WASHINGTON, November 29th. The 'Goveinment has not "yet received any Offi cial or other reliable intelligence_of the re ported crossing of General t3edgwick with 'troops to Matamoras, and therefore thinks' the statement untrue. NEW , ORLEANB, November 28th.—A pi_ - vate letter, dated Baton. Rouge, says there, is no intruth The ,report that three cargoes of small arms had been shipped from the •_arsentil at that piace, intended for a military force to be organized on the Mexican fron tier. The arms were sent to New York for needed repairs. • Nzw ORLEANS, Nov. 29.—The steamer Alliance, from Vera Cruz, brings Mexican 'dates to the 25th inst. ' • Maximilian's baggage bad arrived at Vera 'Cruz, but be was still at Orizaba, where he has been residing for the last three weeksAs -a private gentleman, not exercising any of the functions of office. In the port of Vera Cruz were two French and Austrian frigates; also a frigate at Tam pico. Bazaine was at the City of Mexico. The French now hold that place, Paebla,Orizaba and Vera Cruz, using Cordova as an out post while fortifying Orizaba, an impregna ble stronghold, and are also using the Pas , del Mercho as an outpost for "Vera Cruz. They hold no other possessions in Mexico. It is rumored that the Church party have offered to raise $6,000,000 if Maximilian con sents to remain.. An • American protecto rate is 'regarded by the people as the only solution of the present difficulties. On Tues day, Novbember 6th, the Liberal army :moved in overwhelming force on Jalapa which was strongly fortified and garrisoned by the Imperial Mexican and Austrian ;troops. The cannonading continued for several days at intervals. The. Mexican Imperial troops deserted to the Liberal army, and the Imperial troops were driven to the Cathedral, where they were cut off from supplies of food and water. The can nonading was distinctly heard over fifty miles. The final attack was made on the city on the 11th instant, when the Imperial troops surrendered as prisoners of war, and were so respected. On the 11th Colonel Dapan, with 1,000 troops, arrived at San Bartolmo, , on the way to Jalapa, but hearing of the surrender, returned to Orizaba. The Alliance brought despatches for the American and French consuls at this port, - the purport of which is unknown. WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 —Although no for mal official communication has been made to this Government, there is no doubt that information has been- verbally furnished of Napoleon's intention to remove the French troops from Mexico at the earliest practica ble time, the arrangements for that purpose now being in progress. The reason why the first detachment, or one-third of the troops, were not embarked in November, according to the Emperor's own programme, is, that the other two-thirds might have been seriously damaged by the Liberals, •who were persistently pressing them. To obviate such a result, it was deemed most prudent, as a military necessity, to re move them all at once, and there is now no doubt that this will be done. Much speculation has been indulged in as to the actual business of Lieutenant General - Sherman in accompanying Minister Camp bell to Mexico. The truth, however, is, that he was designated as an adviser to that gen •-tleman, both as regards diplomatic affairs in Mexico, and military movements on the frontier, should an emergency arise to re quire a new disposition of our troops ; bat singe the reception of the Emperor's inten tions, with regard to the removal of his army, it is not supposed that such a neces city will occur. The last news received by i the Govern ment respecting Maximilian, s that he was at Orizaba, the French officials refusing to _permit him to leave Mexico unless he for mally resigns his crown. THE LATE CAVE JOHNSON.—Cave John son died at the age of nearly 74 years, at his residence in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Fri day, the 23d inst. He had long been in feeble health, and his death was not un looked for. He was born in Robertson county, Tennessee, January 11, 1793; was a lawyer by profession, earning a fair reputa tion at the bar, and for several years held the office of Circuit Judge. In 1827, he was nominated on the Republican ticket, and by the heavy vote of the negroes of his dis trict, was elected to Congress. He repre sented his district during the entire term of President Jackson's Administration. In 1838 he was again elected, and by sub sequent re-elections remained in Congress until 1845, when he was appointed Post master General in President Polk's Cabinet. At the close of Polk's administration, Mr. Johnson retired to private life, and accepted the Presidency of the Bank of Tennessee, which position he filled till 1859. His extreme age prevented bim from taking an active part in public affairs dur ing the war; but when his native State'was conquered from the rebels and a new Legis lature was organized, Mr. Johnson was •elected to the State Senate by the Union party. His feeble health, however, would not permit him to assume the duties of the position. He' therefore resigned, and re mained quietly at his home in Clarksville. He wasa man of industrious habits, of fair attainments, and possessed considerable ability as a statesman. AFRICAN CONNERCE.—The Commercial Agent at Gaboon, Africa, in a letter to the Department of State, dated Sept. 25, trans mits the accompanying circular of laws af fecting the commerce of that port, hitherto - free. He says: "I learn from an English trader, "who yesterday had an interview with the Commandant Superior, that export and import duties of four per cent., anchor age duty of one franc per ton; also, pilotage d lighthouse ' fees are to.be imposed. The export duty, as explained by the comman dant, will apply to African produce brought into Gaboon, from other ports in a ship coming here to complete her cargo, as many of the American vessels do." Circular.—The merchants are informed that in consequence of a reduction affecting the sum which the colony receives from the metropolis for its local expenses, they will be, from the Ist of January, 1867, subjected to the payment of annual duties, of patent and license, the tariff of which has been es tablished according to the following figures, to wit: A patent for a wholesale dealer, 800 francs; pitent for a retail dealer, 400 francs; a license or a tavern, or to retail liquors, 400 francs. An agreement, which will follow her e = after, will determine the conditions of clas cification of the merchants in these three • :tegories. PARDON OF A REBEL GENERAL.--GeßeTal 'eorge H. Stuart, of Maryland, late-Major • eneral in the Confederate service, and a .raduate of West Point, was pardoned on Saturday, upon the recommendation of Gen •ral Grant, General Charles G. Halpine "Private O'Reilly"), General Alex ,: viler T. Perry, of the Quartermaster's De ,artmen t, Major-General Barker, General ' enjamin G. Card, Major-General James 8. - 1' icketts, General J. C.
