He is better to-day. Despatches received here by the French Minister from Mexico, from Marshal Ba zaine, the French commander, do not indi cate that the French intend to withdraw from that country for some time yet. Maximilian may leave, but the French troops will not. Secretary McCulloch has sent to the President the name of Joe Severna as Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia. This settles the matter. Opening of the Susquehanna Bridge. HAVRE DE GRACE, Nov. 21.—An engine crossed the new bridge over the Susque hanna at this point 'yesterday. It will be open for travel on Monday next, when the trains to and from Baltimore will use it regularly, thus lessening the time between Philadelphia and Baltimore half an hour. A Cy - Emus CASE.-A curious pig case was lately tried at Norwich, England. A woman, being about to purchase a fall-grown pig for the moderate sum of sixteen shillings, asked the vendor whether the animal was "all right." " "It's a precious sight righter than you, was the reply—an assurance which the purchaser, considering her own soundness unimpeachable, appears to have thought perfectly satisfactory. The pig, however, in a few days died, and the ques tion then arose, and was tried before the local magistrates, whether a "warranty" bad been given with it. The woman laid great stress on the fact that the pig had been declared "righter" even than she wasi but the magistrates were of opinion that , that didn't amount to much, and dismissed the ease. • - A SECRETARY WANTED.—Admiral Dahl gren has had some difficulty in securing a secretary. Mr. H. E. Daniels, legal adviser of the Navy Department, to whom the ap pointment was first tendered, has suddenly died. Mr. Charles CowleY, of Lowell, Mass., formerly Fleet Judge Advocate of the South Atlantic Squadron, has declined, preferring the practice of the law. A NOBLE CH.ABITY.--The Baldwin Place "Home for Little Wanderers," .' Boston, was opened about eighteen monthsago. It has already received over eleven hundred children, and has placed between four and six hundred in well-selected country homes. CON*BITTION.—The Cotton Planters' Con vention met on the 13th inst. at Milledge ville, Georgia. The financial committee re ported that, by the issue of the war,thefunds of the association-about five thousand dol lars—had become worthless. In company , with two others he was found in the yard of a house on Morgan street, above Tenth, last evening about nine o'clock, haying jumped the fence. No tools or other instruments used by burglars were found on his person. He was held in $l.OOO bail for a farther hearing. The other two men esc a ped, but one of them was arrested this morningby Officer Bartle mas, qt Fifteenth and Hamilton streets, having been followed by some boys who knew that he had been with Phillips last evening. The prisoner gave his name as Samuel Wilson. He was locked up for a hearing. HIGHWAY RORTIERM—An elderly gentle man, named John Wilson, was robbed last night, at Front and Chestnut streets. He was passing quietly along, when he was at tanked by two rough-looking fellows, who demanded his money, at the sometime pre senting a pistol at his head. Mr. Wilson commenced to demonstrate, but was imme diately knocked down and his pockets rifled. The robbers got about $l5 and a silver snuff box, and then ran off, leaving their victim in a helpless condition upon the sidewalk. Mr. Wilson was taken to his home by some gentlemen, who came by shortly after the outrage. " IMPORTANT, IF TRUE."-it7l9 reported that several of our Passenger Railway Com panies have under consideration a proposi tiOn to reduce the fare to five cents again. This is said to be owing to a decrease it the price of horse feed. A. number of the New. York street railways have already reduced the fare, and there is no reason why our roads should not fellow the example. LARCENY OF A SAlL.—William Hart was before Alderman Toland, this morning upon the charge of the larceny of ajib sail valued at $l5O. The sail was stolen from the sloop Constitution, Captain Booth, of Ches ter, and was found, as is alleged on a vessel belonging to Hart, lying at Christian street wharf. W., Nov. 21.—A'special com mission, under which the remaining Fenian prisoners are to be tried, has been received by the authorities here, and it is expected that the sheri ff will forthwith receive a pre cept to summon the necessary jury. There are 39 Fenian alt ogether remaining in ja.ii 7 of whom have been sentenced, leaving 32 yet awaiting trial, which will take place immediately, commencing probably on the 3d proximo. Fire in Danville, Viiirinln. Moulton - e t Nov. 21.—A spacial despatch to the Dispatch, states that afire in Danville, this morning, consumed Crigler d Gordon's store,gleshman's dry goods, Sadler dr- Co.'s cloththe'and the Danville bakery. An arrest of a negro for stealing while the fire was in progress threatened to produce a riot among the blacks, but all was quiet at the last accounts.
